I was 8 years old in 1992 when Bret really emerged and I watched wrestling religiously in the 90s. Watched almost all the WWF PPVs from 1992 until 1999. Being Canadian Bret was truly my hero (I loved Owen as well). He is still my hero and my respect for him has only grown over the years. I have read his book several times and I just can't get enough Hitman. One of the all-time greats.

This raises so many questions about the time and place of Brett's career. He stopped the wwf from imploding but would he have even been given the chance to it if the company wasn't looking for a savior. And what if Brett had come up later and hadn't played that part. How would he have molded his character during and alternate timeline attitude era. Brett's promos were always so different from those that came before him and those that came after.

Idk about personally saving the business but it was either him or JR that got Austin to WWF and Bret wanted to work with him so saved/made wrestling by helping Austin get bigger before he skyrocketed. Bret should been a heel longer...was great as a heel. Starting to think wrestling with shadows was a work, Bret said he wanted to make something big and his an hbk’s beef was suppose to be fake at the beginning. That documentary wouldn’t of sold over 500 copies if it didn’t have that huge history take place. Vince limping when getting punched in the face. That doc benefited everyone. But would hbk have taken the chance when he loved being a baby face.

Nash makes very convincing arguments. Everybody won (financially) as a result of Montreal, except that WCW fumbled when it came to booking Bret.

Just remember this guys. Bret had something The Rock and Hulk Hogan never got the chance to do and that was beat STONE COLD IN HIS PRIME at Wrestlemania. That alone makes Bret a Huge draw and WCW dropped the ball on that if he came in and took over HOGANs role as Babyface beating the NWO it woulda flipped Wrestling to a good guy vs bad guy sport agian. Instead we SAW fucking tweener DQ and Tweener Main events for the next 8 years :D across both brands.
@MarlonAnthony
@MarlonAnthony Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's fair to say Stone Cold was in his prime at WM13, He was gaining momentum as a heel sure, but the double turn made him even hotter and by the time we get to WM14, Austin was not only super popular, he was the freshest thing in the buisiness since the nWo. The WM14 match was him being anointed, 98-99 was his prime years.

What doesn't add up is it being a work. Why would Vince develop the most talked about "angle" for the last 25 years, build a sympathetic Babyface out of his former world champion and then send him to wcw to prosper and continue the momentum? Obviously, wcw didnt continue the momentum because they were stupid and let politics destroy the company. Vince wouldn't have known that was going to happen though in 1997. He can't assume wcw would botch bret hart as bad as they did. You would have to assume anyone who isn't incompetent would get some value out of the best "angle" ever being served to them in a silver platter. It makes no sense for Vince to do that.. Heck, you might say that the plan worked for wwf in creating the Vince McMahon character. Look back though, Vince didn't know what he had there either. He was trying to come off as the good guy saying Bret screwed Bret and "the time honored tradition blah blah". It was only after weeks of realizing the fans hated him for it that he pivoted and became the heel we know. Bit of a long response but to sum it up lol, it being a work makes no sense for me.

@@OfficialFingazMC sorry lol. I just don't see it. I know neither of us will convince the other but I'll have a friendly debate on it here briefly. Vince offered the 20 year contract out of fear that Bret would go to wcw. He then had buyers remorse because 20 years into the future is way too hard to predict. He still wanted Bret but there was just no way he could do that. So, he panicked and feared losing Bret to wcw, offered 20 yr contract and then backed out.. So then, he goes from fearing losing Bret to offering Bret to wcw AND placing him in a super hot angle to plug into his competitors tv show? I'm sorry it just doesn't add up to me. Not only that but you can see the resentment from Bret 25 years later. That isn't an angle being worked, that is legit resentment from his boss screwing him.
