Think about it: if Cena wins the Rumble, he's got no need to be in the Chamber match next month. That's just bad business on WWE's part, not having your biggest returning star compete in a marquee match during his retirement tour. Punk has too many ongoing rivalries (Seth, Roman, Drew) to start another one with Cody imo. Plant those seeds now, revisit it later once he wraps up a few of the other stories. I was there in the building, watched 8 royal rumble on KZbin in preparation…. And this was my favorite royal rumble . So many of my personal favorites looked so strong and had solid showcasing! The women of WWE future is so BRIGHT!!!! Love all the NXT ladies! Men rumble was incredible. I don’t know how the crowd sounds on the broadcast but in the stadium was nuts! I think the show overall was a 6/10 because I hate charlotte flair and think her winning was boring, predictable, and lazy and just a slap in the face for all the women that worked their absolute asses off the year+ she was gone, so her winning was a straight downer and killed my mood, I’ll have to rewatch the tag match because I was pretty taken out of it because of the women’s rumble and was kinda in a bad mood, the ladder match brought me back right when I hear Cody’s music because I knew a banger was coming, and I loved the men’s rumble and teared up when Cena made his entrance, I was mentally prepared and predicted he would lose but man I instantly switched when he came out and wanted him and predicted he would win in that moment. I know I’m being harsh but man charlotte winning brought the show down 2 or 3 points and really dampened my enjoyment I’m happy it started and not ended with it because I think I would have been even more harsh and pissed.

This reminds me of all the times in the late Vince Era where so many people got over on themselves and he just didn't push them to the top. Jey has been a great face ever since turning on Roman Reigns and he got bigger and bigger by the months and even after losing over and over again the fans still loved him. Believed in him and they still do. Every Raw the crowd goes crazy for Jey Uso. Also imagine John Cena losing the Chamber as well. Sami Zayn just became WWE’s biggest wildcard last night. There’s so many directions they can go with him.. he could enter the Chamber and win that. He could attempt to avenge KO against Cody. KO could turn on him for not helping him win last night. He could get the crowd behind him and insert himself into Jey’s Championship match. There is a story there where Sami is fed up, and there’s so many things he could be fed about it that you can just pick one and blast the rocket off. Owens turns on Sami, Sami turns heel and destroys Owens.. like security having to pull Sami off of Owens after he hits him with 16 chair shots. Sami follows that up with finding a way to insert himself into the Jey and Gunther match.. Or you get Sami being shocked and disappointed in Cody, and vowing to dethrone Cody. That could end with Sami and Cody at Mania, or you can take that to the Chamber and have Cody win, and from there you can have Sami turn heel and insert himself into one of the Championship matches. Maybe Jey comes out on the Raw after the Chamber following Sami’s loss and attempts to comfort Sami and Sami says he hasn’t forgotten who threw him out of the Rumble before snapping and destroying Jey. Or maybe Sami finds a way into the elimination Chamber match, screwing who exactly? Idk, but similar to Edge attacking Kofi in 09, but Sami ends up winning.. that’d be awesome.. or Sami comes in and beats the final two guys senseless and the match ends in a no contest, so we get some kinda scenario after the Chamber were Sami can turn one of the two matches into a triple threat. Maybe I’m overthinking but Sami could have heat with Owens as a face. He could turn heel on Owens for Owens always betraying him. He could turn heel on Cody for what Cody did to KO. He could turn heel on Jey for Jey knocking him out the Rumble. He could just snap at the entire situation playing out in front of him.. maybe he’s tired of the way all of his friends act towards him and each other. Sick of being the peacemaker. Sick of losing his opportunities, and playing second fiddle to everybody he supports. Or Sami could just mentally go rouge.. there’s so many different things they can do with him right now.. The obvious would be another match with Owens but Orton is lurking on the horizon, I don’t see that happening again..

I’m not mad at Jey winning per se-and I definitely don’t hate Jey or anything-I just think there was a better Mania route. And that route starts with Kevin Owen’s beating Cody at the Rumble and ends with Sami beating him at Mania. KO has repackaged himself as this big villain and he’s finally on the cusp of winning the belt after 8 years-and it pays off. And Sami who’s never won it wins the Rumble and these two childhood friends with decades worth of storytelling main event Mania. And that leaves Cena to face Gunther at Mania which is his perfect opponent. To me that’s just better than Jey getting there and again facing Gunther, not just because Jey already had his big breakout singles moment winning the IC title this year unlike Sami and KO who’s goals were always the big one-but because Jey had just lost to Gunther 7 days ago. He’s never beaten Gunther. I like Jey going there, he’s over enough. But I just don’t think his is the story that needed this moment to finally pay off who he’d been for the past few years. Whereas Sami and KO’s both needed this Rumble and Mania to validate their journeys. It was just perfect timing for those two, and I don’t have nearly as much excitement for another Jey V Gunther match. And, neither do I have as much excitement for a Cody V Cena Mania match as I do a Cena V Gunther one because all the novelty of a Face V Face match is kind of lost when it’s Cena’s very last Wrestlemania. Cody Rhodes will not, cannot be a face in that match no matter how you build it. But he’s too big of a face to turn heel right now. And if Cena *DOESN’T* win the Elimination Chamber I’m going full IWC mark mode. To me, Jey winning this Rumble feels like Rock facing Roman at Mania 40. It’s a great match, it’s even a great matchup-but the timing is just wrong. Sami vs KO at Mania is something I’ve been waiting a decade for and the stars were aligning.

I think people are over-looking the overall story of this Royal Rumble being a bunch of the top guys having so much irreconcilable beef with one another that it cost all of them their shot and allowed an ultimate underdog to focus up and slide in for the win. It’s like the rare times in sports when the big underdog goes all the way and wins a championship over the established dynasty. It’s the 2001 Diamondbacks beating the Yankees, the 2001 Patriots beating the Rams, the 2008 Giants over the Patriots, Douglas vs. Tyson, Gardner over Karelin etc. Sometimes it happens, and it happened this time. The only thing I would have done differently as a Fantasy Booker With Feelings is maybe just make everything end way more chaotically and abruptly. Final 6: Punk, Roman, Seth, Cena, Jey, Paul I would have set it up where Roman and Seth are doing their spot hanging over the top rope except Paul is also tied up into that mix at the same time that Cena and Jey are doing their apron spot with Jey on Cena’s shoulders. Have Punk realize that he can easily dump everyone and go to WrestleMania. Let him flip Roman, Paul, and Seth the exact same way he did and then have him try to do a running knee to Cena to knock both him and Jey off the apron only to have Jey roll off Cena’s shoulders and over Punk back into the ring as Punk knocks Cena off the apron, and Jey immediately upends Punk for the win. That’s my change. I thought the end of the Rumble went a little too slow and could have really benefitted from some rapid-fire craziness at the end to REALLY sell the Jey Uso coming out of nowhere thing.

@ Yeah that was a misstep in my opinion. The problem is that this is Cena’s retirement YEAR, not his retirement match. He’s got the whole year to soak all this shit in, we don’t need him to be the big doe-eyed ‘OMG I Can’t Believe I’m Still Here’ babyface in every single PLE. Having Punk eliminate Cena could have been a great callback and renewal to their feud from back in the day. Imagine getting those two back on the mic against each other again.
