Taeyeon has always had more creative freedom than most SM artists. She's a really influential artist and one of the best singers in the industry, and SM knows this. Aside from that, Taeyeon is not afraid to speak her mind when it comes to her music. She is really particular about what she releases and she cares more about the content and quality of her music vs it being socially accepted or popular. On top of that, she's always been really mature (while still very quirky and silly, of course :p) and likes to sing about life experiences, whether it's love, heartbreak, identity, insecurities, expectations, pressure, etc. She's so passionate about this that I just don't think she allows SM to choose what she must do as a solo artist. Another great example is Key. While Key is a bit more kpop-ish, he is very strict and serious about the kind of music he releases. He's not afraid to share his ideas and critique, which I think is essential for any artist who wants to make the music they want, and not music their label wants. Even when SM has their own ideas and wants to decide on certain things for him, Key prepares himself to fight for his ideas and decisions until he either wins or they settle for something that works for both himself and the label.... How about I just say SHINee members in general are all like this 😄 Like Key and the rest of SHINee at this point, Taeyeon is not afraid of making music that is typically not thought of as kpop. She's incredibly versatile and has always liked exploring different genres and singing styles.
