I have the legendary module but I've dithered between using a full tank build basically the same as yours and the concealment build I currently use. I don't see CVs every match and I've experienced quite a few situations where the added ability to disengage was helpful. That said, the Montana is a vastly underrated ship, thanks to brining it's strengths to light.

Montana is a great ship, and it really suits her tank build. Stealth build might som work (I use it on some ships) but a tank build don't care if you are spotted.

I’ve seen a lot of people recommend DM and Worcester, and a fair number of people run him in Montana. DM and Worcester are more common since it’s a lot easier (relatively speaking) to get double strikes or confederates and take advantage of his buffs. Another potential ship is Alaska - the double strike buff wouldn’t see as much use, but the confederate one would, and Halsey’s unique skills suit an Alaska-specific build too.

In the early days it was a monster against everything BUT its opposite, the Yamato. Was something of a problem quite often. Meta having changed that's by no means as relevant today. In fact I think it's kind of ridiculous how easily the Yamato takes citadel hits compared with other tier 10 BBs.

If you want to go with tankiness can I suggest you change main armaments mod 1 for either damage control party mod 1 or Auxillary armaments mod 1, Monty's main guns are tanky enough, her aa can get worn down though. I'm not sure which of those two other options are the best...

I would definitely encourage you to grind them. NC is amazing (personally I think she was slightly better before the CV rework with its AA system but she’s still very strong), Iowa can be a great ship, and Montana is amazing (great accuracy with guns that will hurt most things you can touch, good AA, still fairly maneuverable for a high tier BB, and relatively stealthy and tanky with the right build). I will warn you though, the rest of the line going up to t8 can be infuriating with their super slow speed (especially when pretty much everything else outruns you starting at mid tier) and the battles being over by the time you get to them. But it does teach map awareness, since poor positioning means you’ll do almost no damage. The thing with the USN BBs is they’re not really masters of any one thing, but they do well at pretty much everything. They can even push in and brawl most BBs in mid and high tiers with no problem doing 20-30k damage per salvo even on German BBs with their turtleback. Everyone keeps saying the only good BBs right now for competitive are Yamato and Republique, but Montana has no problems dealing with either one of them. If a Yamato doesn’t kill you before you get close, you will out maneuver its guns and can get easy citadels, and you can bowtank Republique and punish it if you get behind it since Republique’s guns are all in the front. And with its decent AA, if CVs become a regular presence in ranked and clan battles again, it will just become more popular.

can i please have some help? i play the iowa and legit on an avg i get about 60k to 80k dmg. but i 90% of the time my shots overpen and do no dmg or they some how go to low, so i adjust my aim and then it goes lower or way to high. rarely do i get citadels not because i cant aim not because i dont know what i am doing but because of rng? i see alot of youtubers getting 100k+ dmg games getting loads of citadels or high dmg shots yet when i play i can do just as good but only get 60 -70k dmg and mabye just mabye 1 citadel... btw i do angle my ship and make sure im not sitting broadside waiting for someone to hit me for 30k dmg xD so all i want to know is why do my shots never EVER do dmg and some how miss or overpen. P.S the amount of times i have angled and taken 20k dmg and then i shoot someone that is broadside and my shots perfectly hit were a citadel should be and i only do like 4k dmg :( BUT I GUESS MOST REPLYS TO THIS WILL BE GET GOOD YOU JUST CANT AIM .. I really need to rebalance my Montana Captain - I got him to 19 pts before the CV rework and I had Concealment Expert. No point in putting it on most BBs since that fateful day that CVs became gud again

How are you getting most of your full pens to register damage? I keep finding that the majority of my full pens do zero damage, even with waterline shots on a perfectly broadside target. I recall smacking a broadside republic at 10km and getting 8 pens and 1 overpen...and only did 13k damage. This has been getting worse and worse over the last few months to the point in which the game's hardly playable. I can't trust my guns to actually hurt anything. Worse, the dispersion is...wonky...despite the dispersion mod on my Monty. It used to be a lot better, but something changed.

When you get no damage pens thats usually the main guns eating that damage as each turret has its own HP and can be destroyed.

Take advantage of any premium time you can earn or get for free from events and missions, as well as stacking buffs from signals and camos. If you have ships that are at the right tiers for operations, they can also provide a fair amount of experience if you run a farming build that favors xp/free xp/credits/whatever you need to grind. I haven’t bought a single day of premium time, just used all the ones I could earn (the only non-earned premium time I’ve run is around Christmas last year and the year before, where a couple of clan mates gifted the 3-day weekend premium time to everyone in the clan) as well as taken advantage of any buffs I could get from signals and camos, and I’ve done pretty well (two t10s, a couple of t9s, and a lot of other lines up to t7 or 8)

Thanks for the reply and advice, I'm doing as you say, had a 14 day free premium just ran out. I'm trying to do the British line. Being British. I tend to use camo and a couple of xp or commander xp flags each game. I'm on the leander class cruiser at the moment and not all together sure how the xp works from what I have seen from notser and mighty jingles. Only xp I earn on the leander will go towards the Fiji. So is there no real point in playing the free premium ships I've been given like the Roma as there xp won't count towards my British line. Sorry if I'm seeming stupid. I'm trying to do missions and campaigns. I don't want to invest money in premium or premium ships etc, not that I'm tight but I want to earn stuff as I go, just like to be as efficient as I can be playing. I think I can move my most experience captain around my British ships but not sure if that's a good thing as I not sure how the retraining works properly, I use 250,000 xp when I have moved him. Montana is like a tankier Iowa with better guns, and can be used in competitive. From my experience, Iowa is a slightly shifted upgrade from NC, and Montana takes the best from both and creates a jack of all trades ship that can do pretty much anything you need it to.
