According to ND Stevenson, the medieval/sci fi aesthetic is representative of how while this society has advanced technologically, they're still stuck in the same, medieval mindset and prejudices. So it's a cool design choice and it serves the movie's themes.

What is TQ+? A bunch of deviant, delinquent degenerates trying to leech off other people by lumping themselves with them. And they're wondering why people don't like them. This movie really hit home for me because I always felt outcasted and I wondered why because I never did anything wrong and Nimona saying “People think they can be a hero by driving a sword into anything different, and I’m the monster” that felt relatable, because these people think they’re cool by outcasting people, and the people being outcasted are the freaks

I am a cisgender straight male. Just watched this and it is AWESOME. Great characters, and great representation done right (ie they don't make a disingenuous big show of pointing out the diversity casting, instead it is written into the story in such an organic way. They arent LGBTQ+ caricatures, but instead are nuanced characters who happen to be LGBTQ+). I can see that it would be really great for LGBTQ youth. METAALLL 😈🤟

I love that you got it so fast. I figured out who the real villain was almost immediately because she was the only one with the time, brains, resources and motive to have done it. She does play very well initially that she likes Ballister but she turned on him so quick, I understand feeling betrayed but lady you spent the better part of his life training him just to turn your back so soon, I couldn't for the life of me really pin anyone else, and something about her posture gave me "high and mightier than thou" kind of vibes. Ambrosius seemed to genuinely love Ballister and was really torn up by the whole ordeal, the other night might have been motivated enough but seemed to stupid to actually be able to pull it off, the squire (sword handler) could have had opportunity but not really motive, time or recourses. And no other major characters had been established unless you considered Nimona who, being the co-main character with Ballister was immediately ruled out. But when I tried to explain this reasoning to my sister in law she said I was reading too deeply into it and the bad guy probably hadn't been shown on screen yet. She got a big "told you so" when it was revealed.

Something I noticed in the big "monster battle" is that Nimona herself doesn't cause any serious harm or destruction (aside from that one billboard). The problem with Disney is that they don't look past the LGBTQ+ elements. Its either they cancel shows and movies because of it, or they allow it only because it gives them clout, which is just disgusting, to say the least. If it's something that's extremely minor Disney will keep it to pander to audiences in the West while conveniently sweeping it under the rug if they're showing the movie in a regressive theocracy like Saudi Arabia. If however the entire movie is based around it then it's cancelled.

The thing you have to remember about Disney is that its not that they hate queer people, its just that they really really like money. And they don't discriminate, they're happy to take money from queer people, and to take money from bigots. The problem is that the execs at the top worry that if they make queer people to happy then the bigots will stop giving them there money. So they try to fence sit as much as possible.

Has to do with said community never being happy about a representation of them unless it involves a main character on a story following a certain direction. We also all know Disney isn't the kind to write a story based on a minority, and its audience isn't exactly interested in that anyway. They target the majority, especially in a time many big movies fail to interest people to the benefit of streaming services and smaller scaled productions that can "afford" to be more audacious on their scenarios. I'm not against all of that but hell, it is now mandatory in some studio to a point it's exhausting.

@@Creepie_DOLLIE Possibly, but we don't know for certain. Thanks to Nimona's flashback, we know what really happened 1000 years ago. The rest of the movie shows us what their society became. But the time between those points is still a mystery. Did Gloreth deliberately set out to create the society and the Institute we see in the movie? Or was she used by others as a prop and figurehead to push their agenda? For that matter, did the founders of the Institute know the truth of what happened between Gloreth and Nimona and suppress that knowledge? Or was it lost and distorted as years, decades, and centuries passed? We simply don't know.

Nimona is living proof that there is potential to revive scrapped projects. That being said, I hope other studios take this movie's success into consideration and give their scrapped projects another chance. I'm still mad that Disney shut down Blue Sky. I personally love the scene where she is starting to drive her heart towards the sword. Not for what she is trying to do in the scene, but for how they depicted her roar. I saw another comment make this point on another video about Nimona, but at 46:46, when the Director says she was worried about a crack in the wall, or a crack in the system, she *is* that crack. Look at it this way. If she hadn't switched Ballister's sword, and set him up to frame him, he would have never met Nimona and gone through the adventure he does throughout the movie. *She* is the reason that the system is unraveled and overthrown, the exact thing she was afraid of. Pretty ironic if you ask me.

It actually hit a deep scar that I had 3 years ago, and to make it worse for me was the moment Nimona was about to let her heart go through the sword and started let out a supposed last scream at the world for how unfair, cruel and hateful it has been to her, and by then I finally allowed myself to cry on this moment, which reminded me of how much i hid my pain many years and of how much I've just held in my true feelings and self simply because I didn't have enough courage to do anything, or enough desire to let go of the world on my own terms. This movie was done so well, it hit and showed the collective feelings of those whose diversity is still deemed as simply wrong and abominable, and it told the story of those before us who had to suffer worse than just being slurred at every moment behind their backs. This movie is amazing and it's done so well in the department of representation and storytelling.

Outside of it just being an excellent movie on its own, I love the fact that Nimona now exists as pure karma on Disney‘s behalf. All they would’ve had to do was say gay rights outside of June and all of this critical praise and probably several sequels could’ve been theirs, but instead they canceled the movie 75% through completion and then shut down blue sky studios so that there was no chance of it ever seeing the light of day, all just so that they could keep from losing a little money in China and Russia. I bet the last thing they expected was Netflix coming in to save it at the last second.

She didn't know what the truth was, she was just scared. scared because she didn't understand. "The person I've been playing with everyday is a monster? what do you mean? could I have been hurt this whole time..?" etc. But the director...Listen to how they both deliver the line "go back to the shadows from whence you came". 1:00:05 This is actual fear. That's hand trembling. People can be indoctrinated enough to truly believe that something benign is dangerous. It is, in fact, possible to get a person close to something like Peeta in Hunger Games where irrational objects are seen as outright deadly. Considering the Director (interestingly enough, we never get a name for the Director, and we notice a lot of people mix up Gloryth and the Director, which may be intended due to what we're about to say,) has shown herself to possess great knowledge and study of Gloryth's institute, it's likely that before she received that role she was taught for a significant amount of time like expected, but she also continues to research now (we don't want to make too many direct finger points, but this can easily be compared to someone who considers it important to read the whole bible front to back at least once or twice a year as well as having a audio bible to sleep with.) She also has admitted to having paranoia and nightmares. People who are told over and over again that something is the bringer of the end of the world, who grow into an advanced role, and are also given the burden of knowing what could happen, aren't stable. They're paranoid, all the time. They'll stay up in the middle of the night wondering about how to prepare for the end of the world for the 9th time this week when there's only 7 days. This spin cycle of brainwashing the entire population inside the walls has been occuring for 1000 years. 1000 years of passing the baton and becoming ever assured that one day, one of them will have to deal with the end times and they'll have to do the right thing. And each one getting more relief that they didn't have to be the one to deal with the apocalypse and retired first. So the Director, here, to be honest, probably only expected to kill the queen and be done. Crisis averted. When she saw this monster (Nimona) come in exactly as was told, she had a fucking breakdown because of the realization that she was the one that was tasked to deal with this. End of the world, and she now is the lucky victim who has to protect the whole fucking world from ending. Serious indoctrination can do this. ...before anyone even starts to feel bad, though, the Director does have traits that don't come from that starter pack, such as the fact that she took out the queen and a legion of guards (the people around Nimona is normal, but taking out not only your leader but a swath of members is not normal since that would be essentially fratricide,) which still makes her a vicious, self-important, vindictive piece of shit. -L----/D--/R--, Greenpier System 🟦🟦🟥

This is a great comment, I thought that she would actually be afraid of a “monster”, based on what her, and everyone believes. The Director's hand was shaking because she was shocked to the core by the existence of the "monster" she had been preaching against throughout her life, yet she had never seen one until that moment. That was the first time she showed deep fear, then she gathered herself and doubled down on her conviction. I am very happy that you love the movie!

The eye highlights are very symbolic! Glad you picked up on that, I've wanted to talk about it. Diamonds - Diamonds are found in characters like Gloreth and the Director. They symbolize the institute. Nimona has diamonds, but they're rounded showing her distrust for the institute. Squares - Ballister has square highlights, displaying how he doesn't fit perfectly into the institute. He has diamonds in his knighting, showing how he feels he belongs for once. Triangles - Ambrosius has triangle eyes. They're half diamonds, symbolizing his split loyalties between the institute and Ballister.

Nimona is quite the movie to say the least. Upfront, its a quirky yet sad tale, while underneath, the movie holds deep underlying themes of suicide, transgender/nonbinary/genderfluid, and a "monster" being accepted instead of feared. From Elijah's physical reaction to her infinitely wise words, this is a movie we all won't forget for a long time. Bluesky is given its rememberence and Netflix saved this phenomenal movie from being scrapped and trashed. Everyone loved this movie and we love you Elijah.

The second time I watched it was with a friend of mine who I know now did like the movie, but at the time didn't have much to say about it. I think I'd like to consider this the actual first time I've watched this movie. I truly appreciate your passion towards art like Nimona because it invites me to openly feel the emotions and understand the messages it was trying to get across. The first time we see them together, their alone away from prying eyes. The director never mentions anything about them being in a relationship, being an issue in ambroseious finding ballister. She never says "I know you love him" or anything like that. Todd 100% was the type to make of fun of people for being gay. If he knew they were in a relationship, he definitely would have made homophobic comments about it. All he says to ambroseious is that he "knew ballister better than anyone." That doesn't suggest he knew they were together romantically. Also there was the "nachos?" Scene. I have a theory that's where they met in secret, so they could go on dates without being seen by anyone from the institute. Even Nimona doesn't seem to connect the dots that they are together. I think they were keeping their relationship a secret. I don't think that line was there by accident. Meeting nimona helped them be able to express their love in public. Without the fear of being shunned.
