A man who killed two Nottingham University students and a school caretaker has been detained at a high-security hospital.
Valdo Calocane, 32, repeatedly stabbed Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both aged 19, with a dagger as they walked home after a night out to celebrate the end of their exams.
He also knifed school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, to death as he made his way to work at Huntingdon Academy in the early hours of 13 June last year.

He was thinking rationally enough to call a family member immediately after stabbing 3 people to death and tell him to get his family out of the country as he had done something bad. Are these the actions of someone supposedly in the throes of a mental health crisis? It is a persons frame of mind at the time of carrying out an act that is relevant not what they were like 6 months or a year before. Very weak CPS. Went for the easiest and cheapest option.

He had his wits about him to drive a stolen van and to navigate it to the town centre, negotiating traffic, lights and so fourth. He had his wits about him to arm himself with weapons he knew he would need to carry out his diabolical plans. To be in a state of mind that can bring about planning and putting into action what is required to kill three people in different locations means to be in a state of mind that shows lucid and reasoning thinking and therefore pre meditated murder. This was not a sudden confused and momentary on the spot frenzied attack this was thought through and planned.

The Conservative Party reduced the number of mental health beds in this country by a significant amount. Hence the lack of resources and places to care for people with serious mental illness. Sometimes there just isn’t anywhere to place people who desperately need to be kept safe from harming themselves and others. Sometimes it is as simple as that.

A lot of it has to do with government budget cuts. It's expensive to jail someone, very, very expensive to hold them in psychiatric units, so to get sectioned nowadays, someone has to either try to kill themselves, or someone else, just being psychotic isn't actually enough. I know it's hard to believe.

The killer was sectioned under the mental Health Act four times and released four times I want to know why he was released. People may not be aware of it but lawyers can get people out of mental hospitals if they argue well enough. Did some sympathetic human rights lawyer get him out each time? Secondly the police had a warrant to arrest him for over six months but did not. Could it be because they knew he had been sectioned and whoever got him out the previous 4 times would only get him out again so why waste their time?

@@visiow2691Of course it's race related. I have a neighbour who clearly hates my guts because of my race, but never once says anything racist towards me. Think of what happened to George Floyd in America that sparked the riots across America and caused protests around the world during the first wave Covid-19 pandemic June 2020. The police officer had his knee on George Floyd's neck, he was already struggling to breathe as he lay on his front chest with his hands cuffed behind his back. The police officer never once said anything racist towards him during that time, but his hate for him clearly showed by his refusal to take his knee of his neck despite Floyd's constant complaint that he could not breathe. He was not a danger to the police officer (Derrick Chauvin) as he was on the ground with his hands cuffed behind him. This callous treatment of him went on for nearly 9 minutes - his death was preventable, but the police officer did not care. As they say, actions speak louder than words.

Whether he goes to prison or a secure psychiatric hospital he will still be kept away from the public. I think the difference is that staff in a psychiatric hospital are better equipped to handle someone like him so he won't be a danger to other patients/inmates. We all take for granted the ability to perceive reality from imagination. But the part of the brain of a schizophrenic that is responsible for this ability is damaged, leaving the person unable to distinguish what is real and what their brain is imagining. The film A Beautiful Mind illustrated this VERY well.

In the USA the attacker would have walked free after the correct treatment. The UK is very poor dealing people with mental issues. We seem to have gone backwards in every thing in the UK.

The system is a joke , not a death penalty or life in prison playing the mental health card, I have mental health and I don’t have voices in my head to kill anyone so that’s a load of bollocks.

Didn't two of the families stand on steps in Nottingham saying 'love not hate, 'don't look back in anger?' They seem to have changed their position.

Hes is likely to spend the rest of his days in a psych hospital (assuming that happens) I dont understand what the outrage towards the sentence is? other than the death penalty what else would people like to happen to him?

Dreadful failures from various organisations, especially the CPS for coming to a ridiculous plea bargain. Time for the chief constable of Nottinghamshire to resign.

I'm very sad for those victims especially those 2 young peoples, I'm very angry against the judge or the law that make possible that this monster will go to hospital ! He must be in Jail with minimum access to anything can be enjoyable, no book, no tv, no mates.. solo in room small as possible with 20 cm window ...I'm very angry to governments that still welcome immigrants from TOO differents cultures , we know since 20 years that multicultiralism does not work, stop then !!! LOOK POLAND ! No immigrants no (crazy) crimes ...We are not racist we are victimes that had enough
