Have been a fan of Silva since before he joined PSG. But just counting the number of issues this guy is going to address in the Chelsea squad blows my mind. 1. Leadership. We've lacked a proper leader in the backline and who better to command the line than Silva. Not to mention his presence in the dressing room is going to be huge as well. He's basically going to be the new Terry for us. 2. A good defender. Our defenders were piss poor this season and he could be a great fix for the defence. Short term, but a fix nonetheless. 3. Aerial Ability. Not only would he help us defend well with his aerial Ability but Chelsea has struggled to score from set pieces and his ability could come in handy on a few occasions. 4. A proper mentor. Zouma is a beast. But he hasn't been the same since that knee injury. With a mentor like silva he could learn a lot, and maybe fulfill his potential. All this for FREE! What a deal. I feel this will be the most important signing Chelsea make. As soon mentioned about aerial ability, it's been out biggest weakness. As shown how many goals we've conceded from set pieces, sure this is partially due to lampard preferring zonal marking over man to man marking. But the lack of strong dominating players in the box. I've seen too many times this season Christensen, rudiger, azpi or even zouma get beaten in the air of the player got around him to score from a set piece. I hope Silva will greatly mitigate this reoccurring issue

Ben McNutt The aerial issue is more of a systemic problem than an individual one. We just look like a Sunday league team when defending against set pieces as a whole. It’s not about one player losing a battle as much as it’s about our positioning and tactical approach on set pieces as a whole. Even though he is very good in the air, his biggest contribution will not actually come from his own aerial ability. Rather, expect to see him trying to direct where players should stand and who should run where on corners and free kicks. That’s the kind of player he is, and I can guarantee he will make the rest of the team look better. Besides improved coaching, he is basically the next best thing. That being said, personnel is still an issue. Besides Zouma and Giroud, we don’t have many players that stand out as those with a strong aerial presence. Despite being rather tall, Tammy has been underwhelming in the air, so hopefully he can learn from Giroud. But signings like Chilwell (impressively good in the air for a fullback), Havertz (6’2”) and of course Thiago Silva show us that we are taking a step in the right direction.

@@alahiri2002 Yeah, It won't fix the issue straight away like you said its more of a tactical thing, signing players like silva and chilwell will definately improve us overall. Tammy just doesn't seem to that strong, really needs to work on his physical aspect of the game, goes down too easily and even kante has a better aerial presence than him..

Cosmic Lyrics I find it interesting that you mentioned Kanté. I think his aerial ability is actually really underrated for someone who is 5’6”. He does this thing where he tries to timely shove other players to unbalance them, then goes for the free header. It’s kind of like the shoulder tackle, where the same nudge is used to unbalance the attacker and win the ball (Kanté also does that all the time). Of course, his efforts to win headers definitely don’t always work, but that’s the kind of thing we need to be seeing from taller players like Tammy or Christensen. Whether they need to hit the gym or not, they have to be using their height to their advantage.

His passing is phenomenal, but French teams don’t usually play with a high press, compared to the PL. I’m sure Thiago will have a harder time playing from the back against teams that press high like City, Liverpool, MU, etc.

John Abraham Reverse EXACTLY. Bayern are the best pressing team in the world at the moment. Which is also why I think we NEED to buy Thiago from them while Liverpool are being cheap. 27 mil for that quality of player is a STEAL! He does what Kovacic does with an actual passing game and better defense plus he’s a master at pressing. He would be the perfect glue for our midfield. We can just sell Barkley or Jorginho to make room.

John Abraham Reverse Yes Kova did but honestly if you really sit down and study Kova’s game it leave a lot to be desired. He doesn’t add goals or assist. He’s hit or miss in defense because he can be reckless with tackles and his defensive awareness is lacking. When he loses the ball,it often leads to an opponents chance or shot on goal. His style of play is beautiful but his runs normally don’t end in a meaningful forward pass. More side to side. I’m not saying he’s bad by any stretch. He just needs to improve. Thiago right now is the finished article. Thiago can play deep or high up. Like I said we need to sell Jorginho and Barkley anyway. I guess it’s a dream but I hope it happens and I hope Kova improves his game to give us more of an impact like Thiago does. Thiago had the pre assist for bayern to win the champions league with a world class pass. Kova doesn’t have that yet.

Yes, and he is not that much good in tackling and in 1v1. don't go by this video go for actual stats, I'm talking in context of epl where strikers keep on hovering around shoulders of last defender in that case if you are not used to keeping your defence line straight, then you are helping opponents to break offside trap but still a good signing for chelsea considering experience he brought in the team👍

Looking at stats, defenders do tend to decline quick at the age of 36. I thought otherwise, but look at Wikipedia of CB legends, it's a recurring theme. However - if there is one player who I can see breaking this norm and staying elite until 38-39... It's Silva. Great signing. I'm envious. (Arsenal fan)

Yeah Lampard will have to manage his play time efficiently. Regardless of how good he is, he will not be able to play 40+ games a season. I imagine he would start in most Champions League games and the tougher premier league fixtures and then be rested in cup games/league games vs weaker opposition
