F1 2012 vs. F1 2011 vs. F1 2010 - graphics & sound comparison

F1 2012 is here. Is it worth the purchase? That is a tough one.
First of all, what in God's name have they done to Singapore??? It was absolutely mind-blowing in 2011, and this time it looks even worse than it did in 2010. The lighting is simply awful, I cannot comprehend why they would decide to make it similar to their first version. Huge disappointment.
In case of most other tracks, the changes are cosmetic. They are slightly more polished versions of the 2011 tracks, but yes, we can call it improvement. I still believe 2010 is the best looking F1 game from Codemasters. Why? Because that is what I love about their games. I love that even though they do not look realistic, they offer a beautiful, colorful presentation. This made the DiRT series the best looking racing games ever, in my opinion.
Codemasters should decide on which road they want to take with F1. Either make it unrealistic and colorful like DiRT and F1 2010, or make it realistic and natural like Forza Motorsport, Gran Turismo and other simulators. Right now it is somewhere in between, and I am not too fond of it.
What I do like about F1 2012, is that the game finally sounds good. It is still far from what it should sound like, but it is a huge step forward. I especially like the sound design during races, all the cars' engines mix together very nicely.
The handling has not changed much. I still do not feel the car at all, I never know what to expect.
In Forza Motorsport, and even DiRT, I feel the cars perfectly. After only a few minutes with every car I know their limits and behavior. Maybe it has to do with a total of hundreds of hours I spent in those games.
In case of F1, I always play them for a few hours and then forget about them until the next one comes out. Maybe you have to put in the hours to understand the handling, but to be honest, I do not feel like it at all.
I would rather go back to Forza.
What else can you say about this game? Not much. Even though we got some new features and game modes, it is basically F1 2011 on steroids. To be honest, I think even FIFA offers more changes every year, but they are both in the same bag right now. They are both part of the hunt for money, which I am sad to see Codemasters participate in.
In my opinion, if you own F1 2011, the game is not worth the purchase, at least not right now. When the price drops to 20-30 $, you might want to pick it up if you are an F1 fan. I for some reason cannot seem to get excited about F1 games, even though I watch every Grand Prix weekend passionately.

The 2010 Is the worst optimized Codemasters game, if u play 2014 ir 2015, u can run ir More than 60fps, but with the same specs u can run 2010, with lucky, at 20 FPS, worst optimization ever, even, DiRT rally @ 80 on high grafics, and F1 2010 at 20, Is bullshit

f1 2011 had the most realistic sound i think to fit the outside environment and crowd sounds. f1 2012 sound is beefed up and modified and would fatigue your ears after long periods. I liked the brightness and colour of f1 2012 but night time compared to f1 2011 was so dull, lacking draw distance and light. I own f1 2010.

Singapore in the rain looked absolutely stunning in F1 2011. There was so much more lighting and so many reflections, it felt so real. It is like they went back to the 2010 version in 2012, I have no idea why. Maybe someone thought the 2011 version was too distracting, they just wanted you to focus on the track. Wrong decision in my opinion.

I have recently given up F1 2014 and reinstalled F1 2010, which is, i believe, still is the better game in the series.Firstly, it has the most realistic grip, and you can hit the apex perfectly, should your braking is right, otherwise you'll get out of the track immediately, the car stick to the racing line properly and the sidesliding, as well as other car handling is real-life like. The second big plus in comparison with its successors is game graphics and colours, which are unsaturated in the basic version, but it can be easily sorted out by RDD lightning mods - Truelight weather versions or Ultra skies,which, having been installed, make contrast much better(modding is only available fo PC users, as per my knowledge), while the entire colours balance is more real-like. Another great feature is game effects - screaming engines,the last one season with Bridgestone tyres, and the fact that game objects edges are more thick, than in later versions, which make picture more photorealistic.Don't forget, that some essential settings, you could use in F1 2010 - weight distribution and throtle feedback, substantial for car handling and drivability for some reason become not abailable afterwards.Considering all above mentioned, i believe F1 2010 is still the better game, hoewer i don't argue, that games- successors may be more liked by gamers, in terms of Kers or DRS availability, or drivers line-up, i also have F1 2013 due to its classic content, handling and effects, and don't understand why Codemasters still not release classic seasons for F1 fans. I think F1 2010 and 2013 are two the best F1 games from Codemasters so far.

I do think 2013 is better then 2012, just bc 2012 has almost no slipstream which I think is a big negative point. Yes, maybe 2010 more better effect and extra stuff, but 2012 and 2013 were beter looking at racing and handling

To put my opinion across very simply: Graphics: 2012>2010>2011 Handling: 2012>2011>2010 Gameplay: 2012>2011>2010 Menu System: 2012>2010>2011 I really liked the 'first person' approach to the menu, would have liked to see it taken further. Although there is a lot more information in the new 'old' style. :)

You might want to try turning the engine volume down as far as it will go, turn the FX volume as high as it will go, and balance the other audio sliders to compensate. With the FX volume up, you hear the tires much more, which gives you more information on how hard you're pushing the car. It basically makes the game feel more similar to a Forza level of handling.

Speaking about starting in Karting and racing against legends from the past. It would be awesome to race these legends like when they were kids in karting, GP3, GP2 and then to F1. Like you progress with them.

Another idea I have is an all out Grand Prix F1 game which is part historical. Start off in the 1950's and work your way through to the modern era. Get all the old GP cars, tracks and drivers of yesteryear and digitally re-create them. Drive all the decades 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's and 10's. A game where we get to challenge all the great drivers. It would be a great F1 history lesson!

To me it looks like for 2012 there are using 2010s graphics but brightened up a touch and the cars from 2011 but also brightened up a touch. All 3 games have good things amd bad things with them but i prefer 2010. Maybes because it was the first f1 game for a while and also because of the memories i have of online league racing etc that is associated with it.

I think you are right too, mate. I have only 2010 and 2011 and I think 2010 is much better, but when i'm lokking on new F1 2012 game, i think - "it must be very good" :) In drive better is 2010, but 2012 have better game modes.

Well, on that i agree. I only like CM F1 because of career mode and CM immersion. But when talking about a realistic handling, CM's F1 is an arcade game for sure. At least imho its much better this year than it was before. Setups are still broken and doesn't have any "bad" effect or make the car unstable. also its terrible that looks like the TC is on all the time, i can't even do a 180 spin properly due to this thing. But to me its much more fun to drive on the wet because the lack of this.

Great comparison but you are only comparing vid and sound here, I do agree there is not a lot gained from 2011 to 2012. F1 2012 comes into its own with the new handling effects though. Boy racers storming into a turn and cranking over full lock are heavily penalised now with huge amounts of understear. You can clearly see this in you vid during the Singapore comparison. Is it worth the 70eur....a very good question. Again I agree with you, wait till it drops in price and then grab a copy.

In my opinion, the rain shown on the screen (visor/camera) looks really good in 2012, but in this video I noticed that the rain falling from the sky is falling straight down. It should look like it does in 2011 (like the Star Trek-feeling you see when driving with full beam when it's snowing). I don't get it when people say they don't feel the car. I feel every bump with my G25 and can easily feel how much grip I've got left before I skid off the track ...

2012 really lacks on physics and graphics in the wet. The physics of the rain doesn't react to the physics of the car and the tarmac reveals no contrast or reflective properties. Quite disappointing if you ask me.

anyway yellow = slicks... orange = wet (heavy rain)... but try to play to F1 2011 when it is starting to rain and you will see that you can go on using slicks tyres even when the track looks to have a lot of water over there. In fact, CPU cars can make fastests laps in those conditions.

What about 2012? I was penalized for overtaking in eau rouge. In the same race, I was penalized for changing paint with Massa in turn 1 when he was on my outside ... There is nothing I can do when I'm on the inside. If I break, I loose grip. If I turn more, I loose grip ... I don't remember where, but if you follow the real racing-line on one of the tracks (like they do on TV), you will get penalized because you are outside the track (not cutting it, taking the corner too wide)

in all fairness to codemasters, they didnt have much time with f1 2010 (sony gave up the licence), so it was a bit of a rushjob, so you could say f1 2011 was a finished f1 2010. f1 2012 is pretty good, but it can be tricky and times, more so with the wheel. in game wheel options are a nightmare, but oddly, dirt 3 plays perfect with a wheel, i didnt even have to mess with wheel options. seems codemasters has different rules for each of their racers, even dirt 2 is unplayable with a wheel.

Wow! massive evolution since 2010! overall all is improved, but look at details and shaders! Look at 0:27, in f1 2011 the redbull almost look as chromium!!, now in 2012 version, shaders look and feel like paint, and colors are deep and saturated! Then go to 1:37 and look at McLaren chromium, in 2010 its a dull gray mass. It 2011 it feels way to much bright and flat. But 2012 feels so real! Skies, lighting and shadows are also improved. Look at 2:20 . 2012 has the best light/shadow balance.

F1 2010 is the best game. It's the one that looks more real. And it's the funniest one. It has the best handling and it had the funniest starts offline. I bought F1 2011 and I got pretty dissapointed. I didn't even buy F1 2012, experimented the demo version and then I realized that buy F1 2012 would be spend money stupidly.

If you played the 3 games online as i did, the real comparison is not about graphics but about the penalty system, 2011`s penalty system is way better than 2012`s, it is really annoying to be hit by another car and receive a 10 secs penalty...

Yeah I hear ya. The 1st one had that pre mapped story line thing going on I wasnt a big fan of, but the gameplay was good. I skipped the 2nd one completey but have given toca 3 a right old thrashing over the years. I still play it these days. That makes it a classic in my book. I have always thought that concept mixed in with an added driver XP/Level system would be the absolute bees. Gives the player something to really work towards

I wanna see a codemasters F1 game like the old Racedriver/Toca series from the early 2000's. You had to work your way up to the good stuff! Granted it would be more of a open wheel game, rather than a dedicated F1 game, but F1 would be the main goal. Get started in karting and go from there. Would make career mode much more involved.

singapore in f1 2011 was too bright for heavy rain but still f1 2012 forgot to actually put in lights but it is more realistic in heavy rain. F1 2012 Is Awesome

F1 uses the same engines since 2006-2007, sounds on official game are still the best. But the other problem is graphics and physics. Graphics are not that important. If you're looking for Graphics (yeah, G) wait for Project CARS. Physics? rFactor 2, iRacing and probably Project CARS too. I have not played it yet. And can't wait for it.

Each F1 game is a vast improvement of each other. In my opinion, F1 2013 will be superb. Hopefully they will do Singapore better. Like wth happened to Singapore. The bus lanes aren't orange in colour but yellow. And the gloves from the cockpit view looks weird but overall gameplay, 2012 is the best :)

That's Hockenheim and it is very frustrating indeed (similar problem also happens in Austin, 2nd to last corner, even if you're on the tract, you can't take it in 4th gear without getting a penalty...)
