Hey Paul. I'm 7 years late on watching this but that you very much. You're the only one who explained what that wood worming screw was for. I couldn't understand the directions. By the way, that chuck is now 170 bucks (I'm from the future) but you don't need the adapter. Thanks again.

I just bought a G3 today (1/2021), and it was threaded 1” - 8 TPI, no adapter needed! I guess maybe they’re offered in different threads now, although that’s all they had in the extensively well stocked woodworking store I was in. Very good review! I’ve seen your comments on other KZbin channels, but this is my first view of PMW!

Tom T, when I ordered my G3 the only option I had was to order it with the adapter. It has worked very well so far. I can see where the regular thread that you need would be nice. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

Thanks, very informative video on a topic of interest to me. Having been an engineer involved in manufacturing my entire career I would guess the adapter is not included to reduce the number of kits to be inventoried by Nova and the stores. Rather than having a different chuck kit for each of the adapter configurations the stores only have to stock the one chuck kit and sell the adapters separately. Saves them inventory costs which drives far more decisions than most people realize.
@kristilbilyeu76824 жыл бұрын
It looks like your video is a few years old, but it’s still a nice video showing how everything works. One comment you made that you’ve probably learned more about by now was your comment about them including an adapter with the kit. There are actually a couple of ways you can buy the chucks. One type chuck is a direct-fit chuck. It doesn’t require an adapter at all. The one I bought was made to directly fit a 1”8tpi thread, which is the thread size of my lathe. So I can just thread my whole one-piece chuck directly on my threads. The second type they make requires an adapter, which is the one you bought. The reason they don’t include an adapter is because there are different sizes of threads on lathes, and they have no way of knowing which lathe you have. So it’s easier for you to get the correct size adapter separately. You mentioned them upping the price and including the adapter-well, that’s basically what they did for the direct-fit chucks. Mine was about $160, but I didn’t have to buy an adapter 😀 One benefit to the chuck you bought vs a direct-fit is that if you ever decided to buy a different lathe that happened to have different sized threads on the headstock, you will still be able to use your chuck...you’d just need to buy a different adapter. For me, if I get a new lathe that does not have the 1”8tpi threads, the entire $160 chuck is useless on my new lathe. I just wanted you to know in case you haven’t discovered why the adapter was separate 😊 I also thought it would be a good comment for newbies who watch your video, to know there are different chucks that can be bought, if they were to read the comments. If you’re like me, I’m sure you love your G3 chuck, and you’re fully addicted to turning 😀

Kristi, very good points. When I bought my chuck the only choice I had was to buy the chuck and the adapter. After I had it for a bit one of my listeners mentioned that it was available threaded without the need for the adapter. I don't know if I had the choice I did because of where I bought it (Home Depot) or if they came out with the one that didn't require adapter after I purchased mine. I must say that I have gotten quite a bit of use out of it and no regrets about purchasing it. Thanks so much for all your comments.

I'm a newbie to lathes and their accessories. That said, I purchased the same chuck, wiped it down and assembled it according to the directions. I like the quality of the chuck and chuck tools. One surprise was the residual oil that was flung out on me and the wall. Unless you spray the chuck down with some type of cleaner, you may experience the same issue I had on the initial spin up.

DCon, wow, your chuck had a lot more oil on it than mine did, I didn't have oil spinning out of it when I spun it up for the first time. Hope it didn't make too much of a mess. Hope you are as happy with your chuck as I am with mine. Thanks for watching and leaving the comment.

The set screw is to make the chuck reversible. The direction of spin keeps the chuck on the adapter and the lathe.
@paulsmessyworkshop6 жыл бұрын
Mark, I agree 100%. However, if you have a thread adapter the set screw secures the adapter to the chuck body. There is no set screw in the thread adapter to the threads on the head of the lathe. Another great video Paul. I love that chuck. The Nova chucks seem to be a quality unit and every one that I have seen has had a fantastic finish on it. I've never seen pen jaws like that before and I have to say that they are pretty neat. Nicely done on the drilling and perfectly centred on each end of the blanks. Impressive. One thing I found interesting about your video was that the rule of lefty loosy righty tighty doesn't seem to apply here. It looks like you have to turn the key clockwise to loosen the chuck and counter clockwise to tighten it. That might take some getting used to. Thanks for taking the time to post the video. Very helpful.

Hi Paul, I noticed you did not insert and tighten down the small set screw onto the lathe's headstock via the small hole on the chuck itself using the small set screw and the small rubber dot to prevent that set screw from directly contacting the headstock thread metal. Is it because your Nova G3 lathe chuck did not come with that little hole and set screw like mine did?
@paulsmessyworkshop3 жыл бұрын
John, Thanks for contacting me. On my chuck I used an adapter to have it fit the threads on my lathe. That adapter is screwed into the chuck and secured with the fiber plug and allen set screw that you refer to. If you check my video that is shown at about 2:45 into the video. There is no plug or set screw that goes into the adapter. Thanks for watching and for the comment.

I just purchased my first lathe - and went with the Nova Comet 2 (through Home Deport, strangely enough). Part of the deciding factor was the fact that they come with the G3 chuck. The thread difference is probably a marketing attempt to get people to buy their lathes too, instead of just the chuck. Heck, it worked for me :) Nice video Paul. Thanks!

The instructions didn't say.
@paulsmessyworkshop4 жыл бұрын
huttari, on my chuck I had to use an adapter to get the correct thread size. After installing the adapter there is a hole in the thread area of the chuck where the set screw goes to lock the adapter in place. The fiber wad goes in the bottom of that hold and the set screw tightens against it. The wad prevents damage to the threads from the set screw. Thanks for watching and I apologize for the delay in gettng back to you.

He gave a couple of reasons for this, but my main reason was that if I upgrade my lathe to one that has a different spindle, all I need is a new insert - not a new chuck. I just ordered my chuck today from Jet.com for $93.49 after my new customer discount. They didn't have the insert - I ordered one from Ebay for about $20. Nice video, Paul.

Hello, Very good video! I am trying to find the drill tail stock you used. Can you let me know the maker? Thanks!

Paul, Thanks so much for taking the time to watch my video. The drill chuck that was in the tail stock can be found here: amzn.to/3bgBZi3 It works really well. Thanks again for taking the time to watch and for your question.

Hi Paul, this was the first time I have seen your show. I did learn a thing or two as some of the points you brought out I had not considered. I am new to wood working and don't know much about it. I am currently considering buying what I think you may have. That is the Delta 21.5 Midi lathe with variable speed, the information on line gives me to different RPMs ratings. One is 1725 RPM and down the page further it says 4000 RPMs could you tell me which it is or why the different max RPMs for the same machine? Also I am considering the Delta or the Nova chuck could you tell me why you chose the Nova? They are the same price. I was leaning told the Nove until you mentioned a 34 dollar adapter had to be purchased. Is it worth the differences. Do you know if the pin jaws can be purchased for the Delta chuck too? One more question do you know if a steady rest is made for wood lathes as they are for lathes that turns steel? That is the steel actual rides on rollers giving the steel extra support. Thank you for the video Richard

Richard, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and I will try and help as I can. My lathe is in fact a Delta Midi Lathe however it is an older model and doesn't have an electronic variable speed. The speed is controlled by changing the belt position on the drive and spindle pulleys. As far as the speed range you refer too, the only thing I can think of is that it is the range available via the speed control but I am not 100 percent sure. It might be possible that in addition to variable speed you can further adjust speed by changing the belt location but that is just a guess. As far as my picking the Nova over the Delta chuck, as I mention in the video, I had some gift cards to Home Depot so that sort of narrowed my choice. After I bought my chuck I did find out that now there is evidently one available that doesn't require an adapter. I don't know if Delta has available pen jaws or if the Nova jaws would fit. Lastly, yes, aftermarket steady rests are available for wood lathes plus there are plans online for diy versions. I hope I have satisfactorily answered all your questions. Thanks gain for tuning in and good luck in your wood turning.

Thanks. Very helpful video. How did you clean off the excess oil? BTW, I have a Delta lathe identical to yours. A friend recommended the Nova chuck so I searched for a review. Great job.
@paulsmessyworkshop4 жыл бұрын
Tom, I used some mineral spirits to remove the excess oil. I think that WD40 would work equally as well. So far I have been very satisfied with the Nova G3 Chuck. I hope you are equally satisfied. Thanks so much for watching and for the comment.

I have been trying to find a 3 jaw chuck with the insert for 1x8tpi included?? I can't even find the adapter to fit the chuck.
@paulsmessyworkshop6 жыл бұрын
Sam, I am by no means an expert but I thought that 3 jaw chucks were primarily used for metal working, I have never seen one used for wood turning. As far as the 1 x 18 threaded adapter, they are readily available through places like www.homedepot.com or www.woodcraft.com but I am sure they are sized and for use in a 4 chuck set up. Good luck in your search. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

Not sure if you put the Allen screw in the adapter and tighten it down on your video. For those that have reverse, if that screw is not tight, it will unscrew itself. Please add that to your video for safety.

What’s the difference between the G-2 and G-3
@paulsmessyworkshop6 жыл бұрын
Tarin, I did a little research and some reading and as close as I can tell the main difference between the two chucks is the size. It seems the Nova G-3 is made primarily for the midi size lathe where the SuperNova G-2 is larger and made for larger lathes. From what I read either will work for either application. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

Hi Paul, I hope you're happy with your G3. I've enjoyed mine as well. I was wondering where you picked up your Delta Late. I love Delta the quality of tools and wouldn't mind upgrading my current shop made lathe.
@paulsmessyworkshop9 жыл бұрын
+Kevin Miller - Kevin, I have had my Delta Lathe for quite a few years. If memory serves me right I bought it from Penn State Industries but I don't think they handle it anymore. Off hand I don't know who handles Delta tools. I think this lathe has been upgraded to variable speed (ie: more expensive) but you might be able to find one of the older models via a Google search or on eBay. Good luck in your search. Paul

Ahhhhhhh, I can hardly stand it! I ' ve ordered online the G3 48202 chuck and an ixns adapter to jazz up my elcheapo basic lathe and have to wait about a week for it to get here. With bags growing under my eyes I've found myself in the corner of the workshop stopping the wood turning tools, waiting. Real nice lathe you have there. Why a G3 48202 chuck? Simple. When I get around to up grading the lathe I am sure to be able to use the chuck.
@paulsmessyworkshop6 жыл бұрын
micstica, I got the G3 chuck mainly because I could get it online at Home Depot and I had some Home Depot gift cards that would cover the cost. Also, Nova has a good name when it comes to lathe stuff. So far I am very happy with it. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

paulsmessyworkshop after I sent the message I re checked mine screws in all the way untill it hits the area with out threads on my drive,, It does however leave an area inside the chuck that has open threads,, I will call them tomorrow.you are welcome, I enjoyed watching
@paulsmessyworkshop8 жыл бұрын
Bo, interesting about how the chuck is fitting on your lathe. I have seen on some chucks where they supply a thick nylon washer that goes between the chuck and the headstock to take up the space. I don't know if that would help in your case or not. Thanks for sharing the information.

The G3 chuck comes with two different threadings..chances are you didn't need the adapter.....maybe HD didn't bother offering both. Then again I don't spend much time with a business that keeps a cancer causing herbicide on its shelves.

Lexicograffer, When I ordered my G3 chuck I ordered it online and at that time you ordered the chuck and the correct threaded insert separately. Maybe now they offer the chuck with the correct threads already in the chuck. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
