I've flown about 30 hours on a Mentor 5 and never had anything more than tip collapses even in extremely dynamic midday conditions getting pulled in/out of a 5m/s thermal. It's unclear why you let up on the brakes so much, but had you kept actively piloting in that bit of turbulence I think that frontal would have been avoided. The Mentor 5 is one cool cat.

Many keyboard pilots here :P I think the input after the collapse was great and looked like it was very intuitive for you to perform it.

At 1:32 slowed down to .5 speed I would (without sitting in the pod) also assume that the breaks were a bit much, as it nearly collapses - but I agree that it may always seem a bit different from at home vs. in the situation. Happy landings!

Looks like a strong soaring day if you take off stationary, I bet that bubble was mashed up by rotors

since the wing already came forward before collapsing i think braking a little more and especially not letting go could have prevented the collapse. during recuperation of the collaps the wing came foreward strong, when braking strongly in that phase almost no chance of full stall, and so preventing a second front collapse. i think you in general did well, except for maybe maintaining more break before the collaps (not being a pro though, behind his pc).

Thanks Evan, I think thats the most accurate description of this incident.

The 1st brake impulse was perfect but I think the 2nd was not useful? What are the pros thinking??

only thing i was worried about: after collaps you break deep but then realease ALL THE WAY. i would be worried that maybe you full-stalled it after frontal and then realease that much it could really shoot big time. but mentor was a calm boy that day. if you put your hands all the way up do it in a controlled way. especially with that much altitude you can risk a slower recovery
@piotrkl9712 жыл бұрын
You're missing one element - after collapse the wing shot forward super hard (like after badly controlled fullstall) thus the deep brake. Lots of pilots had told me that the brake was unnecessarily so deep, I only half-agree with them. In the air I didn't feel the risk of stalling, probably in lesser wind I'd stall it with that much brake input but than again I don't think I'd brake so hard than.
@dimml0r2 жыл бұрын
i did not mind that you break so much. if you feel like breaking much and you know how to handle full stall (if occours) go nuts. what worried me was that you released them so quick all the way. just take a little time when going up with the hands to feel olif the glider was in a stall or not
@dimml0r2 жыл бұрын
yours was not. so nothing happened. but if it was... you would have been in trouble

Everything about his reaction (after the collapse) was intuitive and correct showing his competency, your statements however...
@dimml0r2 жыл бұрын
@@sebastianlee119 no i still disagree. he releases completely. If (!) glider was in stall it would have shot forward dramatically. i stand with that. the realease was too fast and not controlled. but hey... different opinions.

It clearly collapsed as a result of letting the brakes completely go, leading to a loss of pressure and a wrong angle of attack. Apparently you were also seaching for the riser with your right hand. But with a 360 cam it's hard to say if your move wasn't necessary as one can't see the pitch when filming with a 360 cam and then watching it from behind the keyboard. Thermal flyers know, sometimes it's important to let it dive. I like your recovery of the wing. Thank you for sharing!

You've given brakes and then suddenly put hands up. Of cource it will go frontal and collapsed. If it's diving forward never release brakes, at least so sudden.
@piotrkl9712 жыл бұрын
I think the mistake you are talking about resulted from being disoriented. I got pulled up really hard by turbulence and my first reaction was to go hands up which I agree was not the correct input at that time.
