Very interesting. I'm from a 4 generations long family of scallopers from New Bedford, Ma. Our dredges are very different from yours but man, I wouldn't mind having that hydraulic deck for when we fish in the rocks! Back in the mid to late 80's and early 90's, the only way small owners like my old man could stay in businesses out here was by jumping that (frankly unfair and arbitrary) Hague line. Took alot of risks and alot of guys had trips and permits stripped and went out of business. When Regan was president, he quietly told the Coast Guard to lay off us, so we were able to survive. Then Bush 1 and Clinton got into office and we got HAMMERED. Then fisheries management got involved and closed a bunch of areas for years in the early to mid-90's and things got REALLY lean, even more boats went out of business. Fortunately - for those who made it through anyway - the closed areas did work and now the fishery here is both sustainable and profitable. At least until the big owners (most of the fleet now is owned by 4 or 5 guys) and the government find a way to put deckhands on salary and be able to "stack" multiple permits/days at sea on one boat, which is what they're after. Greedy bastards. They're already stocking on average 1.5 - 2 million per full time scalloper, per year and they're still not happy. They'll get it because, not only will they pay less insurance for having less boats, it'll also work for the insurance companies by mitigating risk and only having to deal with a few "big" owners instead of a bunch of guys who only own 1 or 2 boats. Anyway, thanks for reading my rant and for posting this video. Very interesting and glad to see you always got home safe. Fair winds!
