I was incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to study vocal jazz at KUG Graz, Austria in Mr. Murphy's class! Mark was a masterfull singer, a wonderful professor to young singers and a true gentleman! Mark Murphy was and IS the true jazz singer!

I was at that performance. Mark was always the best - very underrated in the world at large. One of the best singers, improvisers, and interpreters. I hope more people listen to his work.

I have a funny story about Mark. He was swimming in a pond in Ontario. He jumped into the water and his wig floated to the top. We all had a good laugh and so did he. He also said “Life is short, eat dessert first “. He was also very sweet to our son when he was about 10 years old and they bumped into each other at the men’s washroom at one of Mark’s shows. Our son still remembers it to this day. It tells you something about the man’s kindness and sweetness off stage as well as on. We all miss you here in Canada. R.I.P. Lovely man.

Simply one of the best and a true innovator. I saw him at the Jazz Cafe and everybody turned up to pay homage. I am not sure his work with Herb Geller will be surpassed, super tight!

I saw Mark only once, at the Iridium in NYC, around this time. He was masterful. He was also very approachable. I was with my daughter and we spent some time chatting with him. I’ve been a fan since my college days so that was a thrill. I agree with others who commented that some of his best music was made very late in his life, taking nothing away from all the great music he made earlier. What a talent!

Me too!!!! When he was in Italy i went to some of his concerts. After many times, before the show, from behind the curtain he was looking for me in the audience and waving his hand "afterwards, shall we have dinner together?"....Steve Grossman was also on sax that night....

Mark has always been in a league of his own, a true vocal genius, one of a kind. And what about the pianist Misha, truly a new coming star!

Beautiful, Kind of heart and so interesting not just the voice, the knowledge is Wonderful. My breath is takin away. My father is a jazz trombonist, really excellent, I'm an old ballerina. I heard every note. Jazz is like Ballet, it demands excellence and passion. That's why Mark will live forever and so will my Daddy. X

I was a big fan, starting in the late 1970s while a student at U of Michigan. So much great music during that period and he was always a favorite. Still is. And am still inspired by him..

Amazing! He just kept getting better with age. Soulful in his seventies. Perhaps a couple litmus tests for great jazz musicians are that their studio recordings are great and somehow their live performances are even better. Mark passed the tests.

Never got to see Mark live. One of my biggest regrets. Love his voice and the way he breathes life into the old classics. His rendition of Evolution and I've Got You Under My Skin is fantastic. Thank you for uploading this gem.

An audio magazine recommended "Kerouac: Then & Now" years ago, and I was hooked. He played a free show at Cambier Park in Naples, Florida 15? years ago, and despite a cold and a pickup band, he gave a memorable performance. Thanks for uploading this show.

I had the opportunity of meeting this guy way back in the mid 60's when he came to South Africa. While he certainly has a fine voice, sadly I remember him as a sarcastic and quite unpleasant person with a wildly inflated opinion of his own ability as a musician.
