Small businesses bridge the gap with competition and allow for money to be put back into communities, help create more jobs and the opportunity to become a large business while maintaining healthy competition. That's really fascinating. As a Frenchman I tried for years to explain to foreigners why French unemployment was so high compared to other countries. The number of people actually working as a percentage of the workforce was actually higher in France than in the US (82% to 78%), but the unemployment statistics was double. In a country like France where political unrest was so volatile, a high number for unemployment was by design and most governments would explain how powerless they were to address the problem unless we would decrease social benefits or taxes on companies. Then the danger of moving jobs abroad became the ultimate weapon to keep people scared... However, things have changed for a very good reason. These policies have had an impact on natality and there is simply not enough people to fulfill all the positions anymore. People just don't want to work for a pitance in hospitality jobs, which are basically modern slavery. This guy just doesn't understand why people have become so arrogant. It's because they are doing the most lobbying, which is just a fancy way of saying legal bribery. At this point the politicians might not even write the legislation, often times the corporations do that work for them (how nice) effectively allowing them to regulate their own industry. They are more than willing to put up with the additional cost and headache because it limits competition from smaller competitors (destroying the free market in the process). Of course, the bills are always so long and they are not physically given enough time to read it in full before voting, but how else are you supposed to sneak a bunch of stuff in there that no one notices? TLDR: they make A LOT of money ensuring it doesn't change, and until that is dealt with nothing can.

As someone with an intact sense of empathy and thus is capable of understanding what makes us human, sociopathic employers can grandstand all they want but the fact is if no one shows up to their shitty, toxic, health-destroying jobs then they can't make any money, period. After a certain point nothing is worth slowly killing yourself over. With the rise of remote work and the availability of limitless information for free online, people can and will opt out of a miserable life if they have other options, and most of us are waking up to the fact we don't have to play their game if we don't want to. You always have a choice, you always have options, and your worth as a human being is not tied to money. Capitalism proclaimed it was a big advance on feudalism and serfdom, but in fact it's the same.
@user-xg6zz8qs3q Жыл бұрын
Marion Sigaut argued that feudalism was more democratic than capitalism. During feudalism, the peasants would democratically share common infrastructure, common resources and common land (all of which were owned by the lord). The peasants would decide collectively on the production of goods and redistribute surplus to the least fortunate. The lord offered protection and collected some taxes. Things went sideways when landlords offered to buy land so that lords could finance their wars and lavish activities. So the peasants were stripped away from their common land and starved to death. Philosophers such as Voltaire and Rousseau laid the groundwork for liberalism/capitalism and the right to own private property. And they later fueled the French Revolution which was just a transfer of power between the Nobility and the landlords « aka gentry/capitalist class ».

People need to keep in mind when people like economists, CEO's, financial analysts, etc... talk about "productivity" they are not actually talking about what all of us mean when we talk about productivity. They aren't talking about how much an employee is able to get done in a set amount of time. In terms of individual companies [so CEOs in the examples mentioned previously,] they are referring to the formula of "net sales divided by total employee work hours." For broader sector or country productivity statistics they use the calculation of total value-added divided by total labor hours. The problem is that for both of these types of measurements the result can be affected by multiple things beyond simply than actual amount of stuff done per hour of work & I would in fact say that those other things have been the dominant factors for decades now.

At least you have leaders that can say something about the economy that's at least one level deeper than the most superficial "I'll create jobs that can support families", even if it's wrong. In the US, I'd love for someone to give any kind of actual analysis of what the economy is doing and how to make it better. Oh wait, I did forget about the "taxes are dissuading investment" idea (which makes no sense, since you are only taxed on your investment gains. As if people think "I was going to make 10% but with the new tax I'll only make 8%, so fuck it, it's no longer worth my time to press the 'buy' button")

In developing countries there are typically stronger communities. When someone needs help, their neighbors, family, friends will help them out. Children typically don't leave their parent's house until they are married. Even sometimes after marriage they will move in with their parents/inlaws for a while until they are financially stable. In some cultures they will build another level to the parent's house and live up there. The west sees this as not being independent enough or successful enough, however as this rationale demonstrates you gain independence from your community in exchange to be dependent on your job. Your family will care for you while you are going through a rough time. Your job will let you go in a heartbeat without thinking twice. The west needs to go back to forming stronger family ties and stronger communities to be in a position of power. By sharing incomes and resources you will be more wealthy in the long run.

How could we go back to normal working when we don’t have the normal pay in the normal benefits?
@carolinaribeiro8480 Жыл бұрын
During my time at University I worked part-time at a Pizza Hut on the weekends. Normally the Regional Director would come to our restaurant once a month to take a look. One Saturday night, we were closing and had already worked an extra hour and a half in an eight-hour shift. As soon as we finished our tasks we got dressed and when we left we said "Good evening" to the lady and her response was immediate: "Are you leaving now!? Thank God for this paid job with social benefits because one day you will work all day for a slice of pizza and raise your hands to the sky!" This type of mentality already exists at this level and, at that time, 2002, it would have taken an act of God to get a job at Pizza Hut - a highly desirable job, by the way, at 1.90Euro/hour - if we were registered with a Union .

The employer feeling lucky to have employees is the right way round. You need them to make your riches. If you still want those riches then you need the support of your workers. The only reason they don't like this is because they know what it'll lead to: where these bosses won't make as many riches. They'll still be rich, but not as filthy rich as once before.

because this is not the official capitalist apologetics. He's just pandering to his audience: "There's been a change in attitude since Covid" is just him saying "I feel your pain", and "there needs to be a change...definitely massive layoffs are going off" means "but things can and will get better. go team property!" Business people are not (for the most part) bloodless calculating machines, they just like to think they are. Starting in late 2020 we had lots of this kind of talk in America. The business press was coming right out and saying that government cannot allow the free market to determine wages. The real "mask-off" aspect of this whole thing is the admission that wages are not determined by supply and demand in the Econ 101 sense. The worker "arrogance" that needs to be reigned in via unemployment is nothing more than people's expectation of being paid the market price for their labor. They're not even demanding a living wage or healthcare benefits or anything like that. The demands of employers increased, the supply of worker decreased, but because employers were not willing to slightly increase wages to attract workers, they whined that "no one wants to work anymore" and demanded that the government do something about it.
