Glad you've gotten a Qnap, I have a 251+ model, and will love if you could do something similar to the Pi-Hosted series, for a good and loaded Qnap setup. Thanks for your videos!

I think you will be impressed with that Celeron CPU. In my testing with 4k content and the Jelleyfish 4k media test files, I was able to hardware transcode two 4k streams off of this same CPU. I was using the biggest 4k file available for that that as well, the jellyfish-400-mbps-4k-uhd-hevc-10bit.mkv. Pretty amazing.

Honestly you should try and avoid transcoding. Especially on 4k content. Try and only download what is appropriate for your setup. Such as, HDR* or Dovi etc. Check out trash guides.

I’m moving in the other direction. I have a qnap 419PII. But it’s out of support and qnap updates to the firmware have essentially removed all the capabilities I bought it for. As a result I feel a couple of raspberry pi’s are a better long term solution. Currently it’s only good as a basic network storage device in my opinion as support is limited.

I use that model (well a little similar) but I spin up an ESXi server and also a headless notebook using WoL and scripts to shut them down remotely (both headless actually). I only run them when I need to either chomp on something (e.g. 7zip compression without loading my other systems) or VM sessions. They're off 99% of the time but there at a command when I need them, this should work well for your old server. I have a script to shut down all ESXi clients and shut down the host which works nicely too.

I've had a QNAP TS-364 for a couple months. Only complaint is software seems sketchy for BackBlaze B2 and OneDrive syncing. I suspect Synology is better behaved. The core NAS function seems great.

@@NovaspiritTech Backblaze uploading of my 2TB has been sufficiently fast. However, I haven't had a need to download. I shouldn't lend an opinion on any backup product without roundtripping data in multiple ways. I've seen too many backup failures and product changelogs are pretty scary. Best to have 3 or more backup methods.

Perfect video 👍 Love your channel. If using something other than TrueNas, then generally speaking one needs to purchase and keep stored a secondary, identical backup box sitting around in case the primary one goes kaput. That's an issue with the proprietary setup that is fundamental to these boxes, if used as final end, cold storage. Otherwise, these NAS platforms will serve more as a demi-warm, demi-cold intermediate networking booster, than "storage," for most users. The route of going (one server to rule them all) to me personally feels a little riskier than bifurcating some of the hardware, even if one saves on monthly energy. Yours truly.

I don't think taking the side off to install the drives is a negative really for what you're getting.

Are you still using a separate drive on your pi as storage? Or will mounting Qnap to the pi Suffice? In your pi hosted series, you show how to add transmission. Will it be possible to save directly to nas? I think it would be better to not attach a separate hdd to the pi as 1 TB may jot be enough if you download heavily.

Did you get information on how the algorithm for the M2.pool (cache) prefetching? Is it based on 4k, 8k blocks? Also, can the M2 drives be used as a Virtual or "Ram drive" for apps to allow them to be pinned to a flash-tier?
@Bogomil76
@Bogomil76 2 жыл бұрын
So, i am curious, no offend (my english isnt so good).. But nvme is a software protocol, or not? So you meant M.2? And also USB3.2 is also just a name changer? So, USB3.2 must not be at least 10Gbit/s, it could also mean Gen 1xq1 its just 5Gbit/s. You mean USB3.2 Gen 1x2?

Better have another backup system for when the hardware or software fails. Unlikely but possible and that’s why I only use commercial NAS as secondary backups (unless you want to marry a brand and donate your money to them).

I wiped the QNap software off my TVS-951x and put TrueNAS Scale on a NVMe drive in a small external USB enclosure. So much happier, and honestly feel much better about it since QNap seems to issue an "oh s#it, turn off your nas NOW or else you will be hacked/bricked/ransomwared" statement every other month, it feels like.

sorry, i already had qnap,synology at home, synology was the best in terms of software, but in terms of hardware selection and updateability, all NAS systems that you can buy are simply junk and too expensive. since i built my own nas from an intel atom j4105 wiht a pcie 16x slot 16gb ram and a sas9211-i8 raid controller card and using truenas scale as software i have more software and hardware advantages and everything is upgradeable. It cost me without plates $330 with 4 * 4Tb hdds and 2 * 250gb ssd's $410 total just $730 show me a nas manufacturer where you can get an 8 bay nas for this price.
