I really appreciate Jeff's enthusiastic updates and focus on CM4 products. I was about to ask, "What's not to love about CM4?" Then I read the comments of everyone complaining about its unavailability. I jumped onto the bandwagon early, before the pandemic supply shortages and still waited several months for it's delivery. "Snooze and you lose." Yes, some of my other projects are on hold, waiting for ICs, as well. But, the world hasn't ended,,, yet. Vaccines + herd immunity is kicking in, and life will soon return to normal, Folks. If you're still alive and well enough to complain, I suggest taking a moment to count that as a blessing and make do with what we've got for a little while longer. Life has never been perfect, has it? Whining is for children. JS

They are available here and there, you just have to either get lucky, or subscribe to rpilocator on twitter and wait for alerts. Hopefully the situation improves this year-I know the volume is mind-boggling right now, but almost all supply goes straight to industry for the time being :( I've also been unable to get a Pi for over 6 months now. But I did see a few opportunities but let them pass by so someone else could have a chance.

I would love to see the pi 5 either strive for a cooler and more efficient processor or more power, but I hope the more power doesn’t need more than just a simple heat sink and a small fan. It would suck to need a cooling solution that is large so that you cannot put it into a small device.

05:30 Awesome, the cellular router is on its way! This is the board that I've been eyeing up to make a 4G/5G router with two ethernet ports. It's disappointing that the second ethernet NIC is attached via USB, and diminishes the potential speed, but I feel like that's due to the M.2 slot likely attached to PCIe. Though, depending on the cellular modem, not all support use over PCIe, and rather use USB 2.0 or USB 3.0. I'm also looking at the Waveshare CM4 IO Base board for a possible "homemade hotspot", with a Pi Juice for battery, OLED screen for network info, and connect a 5G modem to it. The Waveshare 4G/5G board looks smaller than I expected, so thanks for showing it off and testing out the cellular capabilities. I feel more confident now getting it for myself. Looking forward to the cellular router video when it comes out 😊

I actually use the official 7" touchscreen + Pi 4 (4GB) that has OctoPrint installed (as well as an Pi camera) mounted on the top rail on my Ender 3 Pro. Combine that with the TouchUI plugin, a script to auto start chromium in kiosk mode and it works perfectly to get the full web interface directly on the printer. I also added a small script to turn off the screen after a while if no input was detected. What I like about that particular display is that it runs off 5V directly off the Pi, so no extra power is needed.

I got some experience on reTerminal. It got a few quirks like: 1. Display support only one resolution 2. Boot select switch is really hard to reach. Back panel is tight af. 3. Sd card slot is not exposed. Had to take a part the whole casing to insert the card. Unless you use cm4 with internal storage. 4. Button on front panel only support single key mapping. Wish it support combination key mapping. 5. The I/O board didn't like custom power supply, might cause the CM4 to hang. 6. Display is in portrait mode if running without xwindow. Have to edit cmdline.txt to force it to landscape mode. The use case for reTerminal is a little limited for my work environment due to the quirks above.

Part of me wants to build a CM4 board designed around Picroft, a distro of RPi OS that comes with the Mycroft open source voice assistant. It would compete with Mycroft’s Mark I & Mark II (I believe both are based on a Pi, I know the II uses a 4B), but it would be useful. Especially if I can integrate PoE since Picroft mainly supports voice hats like the Google AIY voice hat. Sadly, I have no idea how to do that.

I would suspect the specific battery bank and its own efficiency would have a big impact on the answer to your question. As would the signal strength (IE 4G/LTE, 5G, etc.) if the signal strength is poor, then more transmit power is necessary to maintain connectivity (the same is true on your cell phone). While I'm sure this is an idea Jeff Geerling would likely test at some point, the ultimate answer will likely be YMMV, or 42...

I love the free internet, but I don't trust public WiFi so I'm working to put in security measures between my devices and the AP. I've never used OpenWRT, but am interested in playing around with it. Put a battery module in the first touch screen and you could do some cool stuff. 🤔 Might be my next project.

Hey Jeff, any chance we can get a video on OpenAuto Pro on a Pi? The stereo in my car has all kinds of Bluetooth connection/random shutoff problems and I’d love to see your take on how feasible OpenAuto Pro is.

I have had a 'Pi in the car' video idea kicking around for a while. I don't know if/when I'll do it but I would love to upgrade the head unit in my '07 Camry someday...

Regarding Home Assistant, there seems to be some controversy around how it deals with the DNS. I believe it is hard coded to use a certain system and not the DNS specified by DHCP or manually. As you are more a network guy I was wondering if you would be able to look into this and maybe explain why it is a problem as some seem to say it is, or if it is nothing to worry about.

If that's actually happening, you probably wouldn't have to worry about it. It's a concern for people like me because I have my own DNS server with custom rules and blocklists that I expect Home Assistant to follow. However, it's not too much of a problem because I run OpenWrt on my router which lets me force all DNS traffic through the server I prefer regardless of what any program tries to use. I think the bigger issue here if they're doing this is that they should've clearly communicated it to their users.

I found the video interesting, it shows that Raspberry Pi products are very flexible. I'm not technical and a bit cacky handed, so I tend to avoid these projects. I'll might buy a Pi 400 for Christmas and go from there.

Jeff, would be interesting to see if an LTE modem could be made to work on RaspAP instead of OpenWRT.
