Ringing again permanently!

It looks like the hammer isn't hitting the bell as hard as it used to. All 5 bells have a softer, more pleasant sound now.

It was all done to sound similar to how it sounded like when it was first made.

That's something we all will have to get used to. Five years of restorations, repairs and replacements, all at a cost of £80 Million, does mean changes.

Hopefully after a year or two of continuous operation the hammers wear in a little. I love the sound, however the bells used to pierce up to 5 miles originally. Now i don't think you would be able to hear them from across the bridge (exaggerated)

Plus, the pause between the Quarter bells to Big Ben is much shorter than before as well. It used to be 7-10 seconds before Big Ben strikes, but now it’s more around 3-5 seconds. Indeed the 500-pound hammer seems to be striking not as hard, which is probably because they possibly shortened the distance of the hammer to the bell. One other thing to note is that Big Ben’s hammer is faster at striking than before as well. It used to have around 4-5 second pauses in between strikes, but now it’s more like 3-4 seconds. That goes to show how much work was done on the hammers & clock mechanism after 1859.

I just toured last Wednesday and the whole tower is absolutely gorgeous. The whole project was a massive success and it was amazing to see these in action! I will definitely be looking forward for climb number 2!

Yes ! I watch a video made at the Cumbria Clock Company and they were discussing whether to reshape,or replace the hammer heads , which would have made the bells sound like the day they were installed in 1859.

i did too, absolutely loved it! pretty sure the bells had a different pitch in the early 1860's from some recordings.

The bell was supposed to sound a E, however in 1859 the bell cracked because the hammer was too heavy and exceeded the max weight limit of the bell. It was repaired by cutting out a piece of metal where the bell cracked, and the bell was slightly turned. This causes it to now sound as a A.

I think the pitch would remain the same. Early recording and playback equipment was not very precise. The first recording was in the 1890s. also it appears that the hammer isn't pulled back as far as it used to be, thus producing a softer sound.

yeah, i should have guessed. Even though the 1890 recording is VERY distorted I really thought a drastic pitch changed happened throughout the 163 years it's been ringing, I honestly only thought that really old recordings would only apply to small sections here it would pitch up and down, But I didn't know it applied to the actual entire recording in general, making it inaccurate to how it actually sounds by today's many recordings.
