Meanwhile, 375 miles to the north is where a crazier ending happened between Stanford v. Cal. on this Saturday afternoon. I think everyone knows what I’m talking about.

During this past college football season there were a bunch of college football games on, and I wasn't watching them. I have been asking myself, why don't I watch college football (and probably all sports) like I used to watch? This question has really been bothering me, for the most part I have the time, except for a couple of seasons I wasn't able to, because of work. As a kid, and a guy in my twenties, I consumed a ton of ncaa football, watching it all day long. I even would watch the late night hawaii game that started around one am, because I had a satellite dish back in the day. The last several seasons it really diminished, until this year I didn't watch any. When I put this game on part of the answer immediately hit me like lightning! Man, do I miss the team of Keith Jackson and Fred Broyles (spelling?), Jackson with all the sayings that he had, and Broyles with that distinctive southern accent what great memories they brought back! There is something missing with the announcers of today that I can't put my finger on. They are also destroying the history of the game, teams jumping conferences every couple of years is ridiculous, I miss conferences the the SWC. I know that progress marches on, but does it always have to be at the expense of great past history! The amount of bowl games they have is absolutely horrendous, when a team with a 6-6 record goes to the joe blow suck dot com bowl, it's laughable. God, the uniform changes are downright pitiful! I could probably go on, and I think some of you older guys know what I'm talking about, but I'll just bring up one last thing. I know this day is coming, it's my Beano Cook/ Jimmy "The Greek " prediction. You'll know when the day comes, that they have taken the great sport of college football (and other sports too) and ran it into the gutter, when they have transgendered sports announcers on tv! Now, people can live their life with how they want to, but why is it always at the expense of something that we hold near and dear? Much of this stuff, I just wrote down as I thought of it. I probably should have taken a little more time to really make my points, but sometjmes the moment hits you, and you just have to go with it.

Well expressed. Now we have lost the PAC 12. ESPN offered the conference $30M per school. And the conference presidents said no, we want $50M. Just sheer greed.

My dad and I, both UCLA fans, sat about 10-15 rows back in the northeast end zone. We were only about 50 feet away from the final TD and failed extra point. Incredible and exciting ending! Keep in mind the Los Angeles Times sports section has always intentionally functioned as a cheer leading squad for USC football. So it was doubly satisfying to beat USC and see the Times whining and crying!

I was there as a 12 year old kid with my dad rooting for UCLA. I remember my dad being in awe and saying to me in the middle of the 4th quarter “what a war it was in the trenches.”This was such a great game and we were also there the year before when George Achica blocked a UCLA field goal with no time left to keep the Bruins out of the Rose Bowl. This was a great era for college football and SC and UCLA.

Was at this game, thrilling finish. I was celebrating, but I wasn't thinking about the Rose Bowl at that moment, but once I was on my way home, Washington State had beaten Washington to knock the Huskies out of the Rose Bowl. Then UCLA had to wait until the next Saturday when Arizona State played Arizona to see who would go to the Rose Bowl. Arizona won, 28-18 to put UCLA in Pasadena. All those dominoes fell into place.

Lupe Sanchez and Don Mosebar went to HS together. In 1988 I bought a home from Brian Luft. Boyer, hang onto that ball. Too quick to celebrate....

The team UCLA didn't play in 1982 was Arizona State, so I got out my ol Avalon hill "bowl bound" college football board game teams that includes 1982 UCLA and 1986 Arizona State. (Anyone familiar with this board game 1980s teams) The results, Arizona State jumped out to a 14-0 lead as UCLA could not get the offense going, but did manage a touchdown right before halftime. Then in the second half they shutdown Arizona State, and scored 14 to take away the game. UCLA 0 7 14 0- 21. ASU 14 0 0 0- 14.
