Their are cameras in the locomotives they are on if they are in idle mode, but are shut off when the the engine is shut off.

​@@TwprailfanI've talked to a few conductors and they'll say is it illegal? Of course. But sometimes the crews are willing to turn a blind and let the hopper ride. For example there was a hopper who admitted to being caught in the dpu, but being in the middle of nowhere, they let it slide and told him to not touch anything. Strange but true. In most cases like that it would of ended with RR police detaining hoppers.

@@vuurvrproductions4656 Not even close. The only thing I did was make fun of deyoung while just going inside the engine which was in the yard due to an engine failure. Still doesn't mean I shouldn't have done that.

As a railfan, I see no problem in someone doing this as long as they aren't harming anything, or messing around with the equipment. Y'all have hobbies just like us. Sometimes, if they know you aren't destroying stuff etc, the crews don't really care either.
