So sorry about the badger damage, Jessie and mum. In my garden here in California, I have a continuous problem with skunks, foxes, and bears. I have found that sprinkling cayenne pepper powder on the perimeter of my beds works really well as a deterrent. Maybe it would help with your badger friends? It won't hurt them, but they definitely don't enjoy getting a snoutful of pepper. I buy mine in bulk online and it isn't very costly doing it that way. Best of luck.
@JessieatPlot3711 ай бұрын
Skunks, Foxes and Bears!! Wow, i'll stick with badgers :O I have been on the war path with the citronella which works very well but as soon as it rains its gone so might transition to the chilli powder :D
@dlsdyer907111 ай бұрын
@@JessieatPlot37 the powdered pepper has worked well for us. As far as the slugs are concerned, copper wire works well in the bed around whatever gets attacked. As the slugs cross it, the slime on their body and the copper creates electron transfer. They shrivel and dry up. I know several people who use pieces of old electrical wire, strip of the outside insulation and then staple it all around a bed that gets infested often (like strawberries).

I'd have murder on my mind about the badgers! Slugs were and are a huge problem here as well (NW Ireland), a whole lot of baby slugs and snails are eating what I have let in the garden right now. You have left the Kohlrabi way to long, they are best at about tennis ball size, maybe marginally larger. Once they grow elongated most of it is woody and needs discarding
@JessieatPlot3711 ай бұрын
Slugs were a right issue here this year too because it was so much wetter than usual! Those kohl rabi are whats left from the spring sown ones. We ate so many!! I leave them to 'elongate' because the top bit of new growth is like a second flush when the original ball has gone woody.

Jessie , you have Badger problems and we have Fox problems . It seems the Foxes ( as the Badgers ) are struggling with food foraging this year therefore resorting to digging for worms . In fact rain seems to deter them somewhat as its too wet for them , only when its drier they start the digging

My leeks took a battering this year too. It took me too long to figure out what they problem was, I thought they were splattered with dirt from rain but it turned out to be black aphids. Never had this on alliums before but they were covered in them, and I guess they just drained and weakened them to the point where the slugs could finish them off. I spent a few days blasting them off with the hose, and about a dozen or so of the leeks which are still upright have started growing again, but it's all a bit too late really. I've never known a year as bad as this for alliums. My cooking onions were reduced to picklers, I think thanks to a cold spring here in the Midlands followed by a windy summer which blew them all flat by the end of July. The winter onions I grew for this year have all gone, possibly a combination of mice, slugs and aphids. I bought sets instead, and the black aphids immediately got to work but I went utterly Medieval on them and wiped out the lot - I don't mind nature taking its share, but if it's going to destroy the whole damn crop, I'll fight!
@JessieatPlot3711 ай бұрын
eugh, the aphid that loves alliums. So annoying but they do wash off faily easilly if you catch them early. But like you say, they weaken so much. I get them most years especially on garlic. Its been a tough year for them but you sound like you've had it pretty bad!!!
@labcat64711 ай бұрын
Time for serious measures when wildlife destroys so much of your crops. I know allotments have restrictions, but here in the US, it would be time to invest in tall or electrified fencing and traps. We don’t mess around when it comes to our food. That said, two deer wondered through my garden today.

Jessie, Can you get snap traps for the rats, and put them in the polytunnel? Rats will continue to breed and feed, if they are not stopped. I used cayenne pepper in my garden, and it helped with squirrels or whatever was eating my veg and it also helped keep squirrels at bay when I mixed it in the with bird seed in the feeders. Would fencing around the individual beds be helpful against badgers? We don't have any here, but the chicken wire did keep the bunnies out of the beds.

In a previous comment I did say you need a strong fence round plot 37 to keep out badgers or all your work will be in vain. ONCE BADGERS VISIT A FEW TIMES THEY KEEP ON COMING...

They have been resident on our allotment site for the past 60 years so i'm never realistically going to keep them out if they really want in! But i am building up my boundary this winter

Have you used the citronella treatment to deter badgers? I’m sure you have…. They also say male urine works a treat but I’m not so sure about that method 🤣 You still have plenty good crops and what you do have is awesome ❤️ x

The citronella worked a treat in the summer but its just being washed away with the wet now. Going to try chilli powder next. also have been trying to convince the boyfriend to come wee on my boundaries... he is not convinced :D

Do they have Havahart traps in England?
@JessieatPlot3711 ай бұрын
Havahart? not head of them... but its a jail offence to interfere with badgers as they are protected.

I know I asked last year too, but is Bertha going to get medical treatment this year? lol! She’s looking very depressed. Really enjoyed the video. 🇨🇦👍❤️. The badgers’ damage seems even worse to me because they don’t seem to bother eating what they dig up. Grrrrr….

Please don't apologize for longer videos! Will your wire mesh over the beds deter the badgers? If so, you may have to resort to those on each bed but yikes (!) that would be expensive. I use planks of wood around the edge of either fleece or netting as deterence and it seems to keep things out but I don't have badgers. They have had the asian hornet appear on the far west coast of North America so we are on the watch though it isn't that close to me. Thanks for the ID sheet! I feel for you with your varied pests and loss of your food! I live in Zone 3b so our pests are somewhat limited by winter. My greatest nemesis currently is that pesky sparrow (in huge flocks) that eats all my fresh greens. Rabbits, deer and pigeons don't seem to bother my garden. Here we have to dig up dahlia roots if we wish to save them but I would think if you mulch heavily, like 6-8 inches for a distance around them, they would survive. You don't currently have minus C temps long enough to freeze the ground do you? That would kill the dahlias.
@JessieatPlot3711 ай бұрын
It would be so expensive Sylvie. A fair bit above my funds unfortunately! But i'm cooking up a scheme hopefully. Those Hornets really are getting everywhere aren't they. But your cold winters are definitely a bonus in that sense despite the dahlias. No, we've only had the first whisper of a frost so far but i'm keeping an eye out.

I thought you'd badger proofed the garden 😭 where are they getting in? Do you know at all?
@LetsGrowHome11 ай бұрын
Would have absolutely scunnered me if that had happened to all my winter growing stuff 😭
@JessieatPlot3711 ай бұрын
They just climb over, or dig under. Or push over the fences hahahaah! Going to put some more effort into the edges this winter!

Aw Jessie how disheartening. It’s not like you can just replace everything because it all takes time and season.

What did "God" have to do with the baggers digging up your veggies? I am sure He does not appreciate your using His name in vain. (21:09) Ray Delbury Sussex County NJ USA -- Ps. You like to read. Maybe you should read the Bible. I assure you. You would enjoy the Historu

Hello. As a believer in Christ….. maybe a better understanding of what “ do not take God’s name in vain means. First off in the original hebrew it actually says “do not carry God’s name in vain and vain translate better as “something wicked or deceptive”. So using using God’s name to disguise evil behavior is what is meant here. Stubbing your toe or being surprised or showing frustration and exclaiming “oh my god” as an example is not a sin against God. Coming on a vlog chat to harangue a youtuber actually is pretty silly and if your intention is to spread the Gospel, this approach is not productive. Actually I can think of no better way to turn people away from the word of God than some random commenter using God’s name to bully a youtuber and make a terrible example of God to the people who follow them. I often think people who do this are perhaps doing this intentionally? Wink wink 😂 On another note….here’s wishing everyone and their families are happy and doing well! And enjoying another lovely, beautiful Jessie vlog!
