Have you ever noticed how the marina in Vela Luka is officially called "Marina Korkyra"? It is named like that beacause in the antient times, Ionian Greeks from Corfu (Kerkyra in Greek) colonised the Island of Korčula, and the island reminded them of thier home, so they named it "Korkyra Nigra", in english that is "Black Corfu". As the centuries went by, Illyrians and the southern Slavs settled the area and the name Korkyra Nigra was over the years reshaped into "Korčula". The antient Greeks left a lot of their heritage in Korčula, the most famous one being the Kairos statue.

We (my wife and I) are pretty familiar with area! Flying from the Netherlands to Prevesa. Lots of charter companies there. We left Greece for Croatia a few years back because of the ignorant anchor dropping in the marinas. You had to play a nautical version of the game 'Jenga' when you wanted to leave. As said, to Croatia; we never looked back. Having said that: sailing in NW Greece is great!
