Lawns looking great. We use “Dog Rocks”. They are placed in the dogs water bowl. And they stop the patches. We have been using them for years. And work brilliantly. We have two large retrievers. That pee for England 🏴 🐶😂

Stunning turf.. I've followed suit and killed off my ryegrass 'new build' lawn.. did us for 2 years but love the ideal of bent/fescue reproducing and no overseeding and limited work other than cutting. Was going to go with same turf but none ready till October. So found another supplier. Hard to find suppliers of non ryegrass turf.. laid mine yesterday... already smiling every time I look out the window.. 👌👌Look forward to the updates.. When you getting the verticut cartridge for the Allett?

Might only take a few passes on my top small lawn 🤣 It's about 3 inches wider than the Hayer, but the roller is split on the back, so hopefully it's not too aggressive 🙏

I’ve always struggled with the ‘strim first’ principle. For me that just leaves a load of trodden down grass that doesn’t have time to stand back up so doesn’t get cut properly. I always strim last
@NoviceGardener5 ай бұрын
That what I often think. Sometimes just do a second pass to get the trimmings.

Top tip for dog wee patches (for when he inevitably goes in the centre of the lawn, cos hey, he's a dog)... Sow some grass in a seed tray, keep it watered and trimmed, then you have an emergency repair patch that you can quickly swap out (rather than having to go through the processes of reseeding an area)
@peterbalding14705 ай бұрын
I do the same ues old bedding plant trays but not for dog wee but when we get a bit of poa annua, just cut it out and drop the new plugs in.
@Justanotherwilliam5 ай бұрын
@@peterbalding1470 same! I have a little factory of plant pots growing at different stages, dig a nice circle of poa out, slot in your new plug. Done... Then time to start again. My soil is quite clay too. So I tend to go pretty heavy on top soil in the pot and dig out quite a hole, in the hope that over time I'll help improve the overall soil quality too

Don't listen to the haters saying it's not real gardening. What absolute nonsense!!! Good luck with the lawn. I'm still a rye grass man, so I will watch to see the results. Are you worried about the amount of thatch that it will produce? Will a renovation once a year be enough to keep it down or do you think twice a year? Cheers pal.
@NoviceGardener5 ай бұрын
Cheers, appreciate that 👍🏻 Some quite intense comments at times 😅 I recon it may need doing a couple of times a year, but I'll just wait and see. Might take a few seasons to get a good handle of the best frequency.
@richardgould19785 ай бұрын
Yes pal, just see how it goes. I scarify ,overseed, topdress, and all that jazz twice a year with my rye grass. I was thinking of killing my front grass off next year and starting again , got weed grasses, but mostly I want to do it as I've never done it and to just learn the process, really? I'll be watching how you go as you might sway me to a different grass type??? Yeah pal i'm not on social media as there's too much hate in this world. If you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything is what I was brought up on! Keep up the good work
@NoviceGardener5 ай бұрын
That's exactly my attitude to it. I've killed a few lawns off over the past couple of years and for that reason, just to learn about the process. Reading and watching about it is one thing, but getting out and doing it yourself is a different kettle of fish. And I agree about social media - I don't have any personal accounts, always been against it really. But then went and started this KZbin channel 😅 Cheers for being sound 👍🏻

Looks amazing. Maybe good quality turf is the way to go, with a busy job seeding is hard work and too much opportunity for Poa to get going in the bare earth. Although your seeded bent fescue looked good too. Did you say you were getting an Allett Cambridge? I’ve looked at a Liberty but can’t justify the cost at the moment, maybe in a few years when I retire.
@stevenbelcher56585 ай бұрын
I noticed poa in my fescue bent lawn. It's only starting to thicken after 4 weeks from sowing. The good thing is that it stands out unlike with a rye lawn as poa and rye look pretty much the same. Both are just ugly in my opinion. poa just makes more seeds heads.

Garden full of grass weeds and moss I think I'll have too start over any ideas?
@NoviceGardener5 ай бұрын
Start with Weedol and liquid iron. Iron will dehydrate the moss so that you can rake it out and Weedol will kill off the weeds without damaging the grass
@SuperChalkster5 ай бұрын
wont the bentgrass eventually choke out the fescue?
@NoviceGardener5 ай бұрын
Not necessarily. In time, one variety will slowly become more dominant, but regular scarifying will sort it.

@@NoviceGardener okay. i am a novice like you, last spring i started renovating my lawn as it was seriously moss infested, i then renovated it again in the autumn, and now again this spring, once i top dressed in compost the other 2 times i have used a 70-30 sand soil mix and levveled with a lute. i gave it a feed and have been constantly mowing. its looking as good to the point the average person would be proud of the lawn, but i want to take it to the next level and dont think i will ever be able too without killing it off and restarting. the issue i have is just so many types of grass. i overseeded in a shade mix that contains so many different species, of red fescue, slender, strong creeping, as well as rye, browntop bent, smooth meadow, hard fescue, chewings it has like everything, then the fact the original lawn had so many grass types in anyway it dont look good in my eyes, i get up close and can identify bermuda grass, couch grass, lots of poa to the point i fork it out then the next time i go to cut i have shed loads more. the lawn is 100 sqm so its a little too large to keep digging bits out. I want to restart maybe next year. but i am trying to decide what the best mix of seed is, i have in my head that red fescue will perform best in my lawn as i have many areas in full sun and a few areas in deep shade but enough light through the day for a fescue to survive. i prefer red fescue over chewings for its creeping habit and i dont like the idea of ryegrass that 1 seed is 1 plant once it dies off you need to repair the area. my lawn wouldnt be for playing on with kids etc, so hardwearing isnt of importance , my lawn really would be the centre showpiece of the garden. Ive just started something now i watch so many youtube vids and strive for a lawn like dan hibberts but i refuse to use ryegrass. i read up that having a lawn of just 1 grass specie isnt practical, so if i dont want fescue and rye, or fescue and bent. my understanding of bent grass is it is invasive and scarifying will only make it spread more? many americans refer to bent grass as a weed grass, maybe it will take time but the bent grass will overrun the fescue? in your opinion would a fescue only lawn be practical?
