Not really, it's kind of a mess. John is mumbling because the words are I complete, he's not projecting vocally because he hasn't landed in what he wants to do yet. The whole song just falls apart at that moment. Paul made a good choice in focusing on the songs stronger elements, thus making it truly a Lennon/McCartney, Beatles track 🤟

And Lennon/McCartney was always about the two of them balancing each other out. John always went too dark and Paul too light. This change in "Now and Then" really showcases that even though their parts are separated by 40yrs. As far as your commentary about it not being "about Paul", the man has nothing to prove. He's done it all and is simply at a point in his life that he wanted to finish unfinished business between himself and John in a loving manner.

The official release sounds like a polished demo. It's all wrapped around a catchy melody, but there's not much else there, like Paul and Ringo were so concerned with retaining the spirit of John's plinky tape they forgot to make it whole. This one, though, it's a song. It's fully realized, it's structured, it feels alive. I like the official release fine, but I'm spoiled now that I've heard this one. I agree, I love the section they cut out. Only thing I can think of - the bit they removed is so very John Lennon solo-career sounding, and maybe Paul thought by cutting it out and working in the bit he wrote it would now sound like they were all part of it, i.e. one last Beatles song, rather than the remaining Beatles supporting a track from John's solo career. For me the song is weaker because of that choice, but I can (sort of) see the logic, if indeed that's what the thinking behind it was.

This is a far superior version of John Lennon's 'Now and Then' song, compared to the Beatles version ......and the reason is because the Beatles version has removed the crucial third verse from John Lennon's original. The third verse - or the 'I don't wanna lose you' verse - has been completely removed in the Beatles version. As several other posts have already pointed this results in the Beatles version losing an important chord progression, which we see here in this Iamaphoney brilliant version - you can hear this third verse from 1min 14sec to 2min 4 sec. Sadly without the 'I don't wanna lose you' verse, the Beatles version is just plodding, while this Iamaphoney version songs far more upbeat
