Peter, poaching and antique market do connect, indirectly. like modern-made jade being faked as antique jade carving, modern ivories can also be made and packaged as antique that being sold in Chinese market, and then flood to the US market, there are a lot of Asian art collectors here in the U.S who collect ivory artwork, which directly causing elephant poaching in Africa.

Not in my experience since the late 70's. Estimates from a few years ago said roughly 8 pounds a day of ivory enter the US, most of it was antique. To date, I've never seen a convincing piece of modern Ivory trying to look old. As for collectors , I've known many of them...none buy or are interested in modern examples..and they can tell the difference. The vast majority of fake Chinese art sold in the US ends up back in China.

@@PeterCombs appraisers may be lying about dates to allow newer ivory into the market as 'antique'. There's still poaching so there is definitely illegal sales to other countries

From my understanding as an EU-citizen. It is legal to own and sell antique, because of free trade of goods. But it is illigal to export and import antique ivory to/from a non-eu country.

Peter, agree with you completely however the Ivory regulations in the U.K. aren’t easing. If anything they are being more strictly enforced this year since the passing of the 2018 Ivory Act with plans to EXTEND the ban to cover other species of Ivory currently permissible for sale (Walrus carvings etc). This may well happen under a change of Govt only a month away. A fuller explanation for those who want to understand the in’s and out’s of the U.K. regulations is on two short films I’ve placed on KZbin last month (and may well help clarify for anyone in the U.K.)

If the laws aren't easing, they're certainly being lossened up or just ignored. The auction with the Rhino horns clearly illustrate a change in attitudes

@@PeterCombs Rhino Horn is a separate issue from Ivory over here in the U.K. though it’s good to see it can still be collected over a certain gram value. APHA are currently consulting with Parliament on an extension of the 2018 Ivory Act to other species of Ivory (Marine Specialist & Auctioneer Charles Miller has written about this last year). Also dealers & auctioneers here in the U.K. have informed me personally of a marked increase in instances of APHA contacting them directly, either to register De Minimis exempted items (where the registration number hasn’t been displayed-you may notice that happening on the saleroom more & more) or asking them to remove items from sale immediately or face fines/prosecution. Though this is all against a backdrop of minimal to non existent policing of the law since formally introduced in 2022 and wide spread ignoring of it by a handful of auctioneers/dealers. But do ask any specialist dealers in the U.K. and they will inform you, at least regarding Ivory, the situation in the U.K. is getting tougher not easier. This even extends to the British Museum dropping the word “ivory” altogether in recent press releases and replacing it with “Tusk”, the association with “Ivory” being unwanted!!! A very sorry state of affairs which we are still trying, very hard, to make the wider public aware of & hopefully one day return to the much more sensible 1975 CITES guidelines which allowed ALL genuine Antique Ivory to be freely bought & sold.

Thanks for the report Peter. I do hope this is correct for the UK because I have an excellent pair of Indian, ivory rosewater sprinklers I would like to sell.

How much would a Chinese red carving box on top with green Jadeite & white nephrite carved on top would cost? Thanks Peter Combs for your education on Asian antiques! I collect Asians antiques because of your lessons! Thanks 🙏🏽💕

Peter we discussed this a few years ago. It is preposterous to ban the sale of antique ivory.

There are lots of disturbing trends worldwide, not only in Europe. Too many problems in the world to care about whether or not the Chinese can buy back their patrimony in the form of antiques. I'm all for it, "make hay while the sun shines," it could all end soon.😊
