You get that invigorating Japanese vibe the moment the lion statue of MITSUKOSHI (founded in 1673 by Takatoshi Mitsui, a kimono fabric merchant) welcomes you to a modern building inspired by Japanese tradition and innovation. This is the first time the lion statue, a symbol of the spirit of hospitality that has characterized MITSUKOSHI over the centuries, has been installed outside Japan. The building’s facade is a simple hemp-leaf pattern, developed in collaboration with Torafu Architects and designer Asao Tokolo.
Inside, the monument “Joining Hands,” created based on the image of putting hands together, greets visitors and reflects how this development will serve as a symbolic bridge between the Philippines and Japan.

If I have the luxury and money to do it, I'll build a Filipino design mall, all native but stronly built to stand any typhoon that is, with Philippine architecture and store inside, all natives so that our own Filipino businesses can bloom and spread its wings to the public and to the world. Imagine having our Filipino products out and our Filipino inventors be able to showcase their products. It is like a big expo for the Philippines.

There’s something like this in New York called eataly. You enter and it’s all Italian cuisine, supermarket, mall rolled into one. For Filipinos not to have thought of this is quite telling about our true patriotism. Unless there’s something like this I am not aware of. Please tell me I am wrong. Or it’s just sad we don’t have anything like this.

@maycusa Just that a lot of Filipinos are more conscious about expensive luxury brands that they prefer to admire them more than our own. We just need to showcase our products to the world in a bigger market and word of mouth, but first, it has to start from its people which is us, the Filipinos ourselves.

There is a demand. That’s business! The pessimists questioned why IKEA built the largest one in PH? Now, IKEA is always full of customers 7 days a week esp the weekend and they are planning to have a 2 big one and so on.

I’m glad a Japan store is in the Philippines, and not only dominated by a Chinese store. I trust Japanese products, especially on foods, safer. Japanese culture is one of the best , it’s clean and high class. But I hope prices could be affordable, so ordinary shoppers could afford😘😍🇵🇭🇯🇵

What i love about this mall is a lot of stores and restaurants are first timer here in the Philippines. SM and Ayala have the same tenants in almost all of their malls. The japanese goods at the supermarket is ❤.

I have not entered "Mitsukoshi Fresh" yet because it was crowded, although I have the chance to do so when I was there yesterday. I didn't know that their "itadaki" was neatly tucked inside its premises. There's a next time anyway for me and when this brouhaha dies down, I will definitely get in there.

The last time I stepped into a Mitsukoshi store was in Taipei more than 10 years ago, at one of its malls there. I have yet to find the time to go to Japan myself (at present, I was only physically limited to watching travel blogs from people based in Japan), but I look to Mitsukoshi's presence in Manila as a hope for Japanese culture in general, to experience a resurgence among the average Filipino, especially that at this point, most, if not all Filipinos are into all things Korean. The Japanese trait of "omotenashi" I hope, will enhance our own "bayanihan" spirit and spur us Filipinos to love our country more, using Japan and its people as an example. Omedetou to everyone at Mitsukoshi Philippines! Gambatte!

At the moment, it is too early for me and probably the rest of us to say that Mitsukoshi BGC can break the traditional malling barrier here. I would rather wait several months later to make an honest assessment as to whether its local Filipino occupants are living up to its "omotenashi" or is it just the usual opening day excitement that I have witnessed.

Mitsukoshi is an upscale mall while SM is pang masa. This mall has a target market which is the upper middle class ,large expat community and affluent residents of BGC and the nearby posh villages. If you put this mall in other less affluent areas of metro manila maybe it will not succeed.

I super love this mall always putting this on my itinerary in Japan. Happy that authentic Japanese goods is within reach now. Only thing they won’t be able to have in comparison with the Japanese Mitsukoshi in Japan is the food haven depachika basement food court yes then can have some goodies here and can mimick some but not all since all food there served in Japan Mitsukoshi Depachika are from Japanese restaurants around served fresh to you.
