This style of choker cable for pulling logs and brush, is working out real good for me. This video shows some pulling being done.
The red piece of steel is called a choker hook, bell, slide. The end of cable (or wire rope) that locks into the hook is called the nub, ferrule, ball. Different names for different working locations.
I mention WRS only for the fact I ordered this choker from them.

This brought back so many memories of setting chokers in Alaska back in 2009. Hardest job I've ever had!

Set many chokers in my days logging in Forks, Wa after I graduated high school 1982. Ours were 7/8ths, 1” and 1 1/8ths. Lengths were 40’ 30’.

How flexible the cable will be depends on what the structure of the cable is...and of course the diameter but sometimes larger diameter cables are more flexible than smaller ones just because of the structure of the wires

Hi Victor and thank you for watching! I like this method a lot. I'm using the smallest choker in this setup too, a 3/8 inch cable which is very tough.

That's what is used on skidders, one would be called a hitch, you could have up to 6 hitch cables on your main cable depending on your skidders size.

Don't buy Chinesium shackles. Buy one from a reputable manufacturer. The rating will be on the shackle if it's a good one. Cheesy shackles are dangerous. Set your chokers closer to the end of the log. Don't worry, they won't slide off. Always wear leather gloves, not thin rubber lined cloth ones when handling cable. Didn't your pappy teach you nothing? All that aside, good video. I bet a lot of people don't know about rigging. I go to a place called Wesco. They are a rigging supplier in Kelowna BC Canada. Half hour away. They sell tons of rigging, mainly to the loggers I think. 3/8" cable should handle about 10,000 lbs. You will pull the back off your tractor before you break that. Always use your four wheel drive with a heavy pull. It distributes the the stress over the machine more evenly. Stay safe!

Hi Random Guy! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment, all very good points and you sound like you know what you're talking about too! I found out about the (lack) of slipping too. It amazes me how aggressive the cable will bite into a log with basically zero slippage. Rigging is interesting stuff! Have a good one!!

@@pmtips4482 Rigging is a field unto itself. Maybe look on the net and see if you have a I dunno, like maybe a reputable shop that does this a lot, nearby to you and ask them for some old catalogues. Packed full of valuable information. I do a lot of 4 wheeling and quadding and rescues and stuff like that. As soon as I edumacated myself, I spent a fair bit of money upgrading the weak links in my recovery gear. I have seen chains snap. Absolutely deadly. Wish you all the best. Stay safe and watch out for the second wave. It will be worse than the first. Remember, family ALWAYS comes first.

It's a 3/4" chinesium shackle. vs a 3/8" chinesium 7x19 galvanized rope. I'd say he's safe. Rope should have a ultimate break of 7 Tons. Shackle is likely rated for 4 tons WLL, break of 20 Tons.

We will typically re-use the customers bells that aren't damaged when we replace the wire rope for these cat chokers.

Still liking it after years of use? Does it ever slip? Does the choker ever come undone when you back up closer to a tree?
@pmtips4482
@pmtips4482 Жыл бұрын
Yes, liking it alot. It won't slip, it's amazing just how hard a 3/8 cable can grip a log or a bunch of arm sized limbs. If you pay attention to the hook-up, it won't come undone, it's pretty forgiving. I just had 5 trees down at once and used this same choker to drag most of it to the burn pile. Thanks for watching!

Thimbles are also used to keep the loop ends from fraying, or kinking.

@@justinhaynes848 Fair point, but we make a ton of chokers, and very few of our professional logging customers want thimbles in their eyes. We have a few customers that use them, but not many, at least not with chokers. Lifting bridles, that's a different story.

In two decades I've never made one with a thimble. I've made pipe chokers with a thimble on the picking eye on occasion but I don't recall ever doing it for Cat or Ring chokers for that matter although you could do it for ring chokers.

@pmtips4482
@pmtips4482 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the end is called a wedge type quick ferrule. There is a small steel needle with a heavy taper that you hammer into the center of the wire rope and that will swell out and lock the ferrule in place. Thank you for watching!
