Chris, I would like to see you test out the Savage MSR 15 Recon. Mike (Mr. GunsandGear) tested the version 1.0 (now on version 2.0) and in his accuracy test he said "I believe this is the most accurate AR15 I have ever tested". Would really like to see you test out the Savage MSR 15. Originally $800 - $1,000 rifles now found in the $650 - $800 range. Comes with mil spec + polished trigger, machine matched bolt face to barrel. See if Savage will send one over for review.

one thing I've started doing instead of having an eotech holographic is running a holosun 507k. its got the same ring reticle, it's got solar backup, it's lower profile, it just works. and it's about half the cost of an eotech

I put a sight mark reflex red dot on an OG M&P15 about 7 years ago and it still works and holds zero and actually works really good. It’s been wet, frozen, muddy and dirty and still gets it done

One of my first red dots was a sightmark, I was looking to a larger window. Its good I never had an issue with it other than its open emitter design. I was shooting when it was snowing and one little snow flake landed on the emitter and totally blurred the dot and with the emitter being recessed I couldn't wipe it with my finger. I never bought an open emitter again after that and frankly there are better options for the money nowadays. I still use it from time to time, mostly when I'm testing something new.

Yeah the open emitter is a drag. But for a cheap range dot it works. It’s still on my M&P and like you my daughters and I use it to pick off coyotes on occasion

What I like with the older M&P is all the uppers have Dry Film Lub in them. Not sure if Smith is still doing this with their AR series. However, most AR manufactures don't use dry film lub. Only on their higher end models. I believe Stag (any model) uses dry film lub. They way you can tell. Is where the BCG is. the internal walls of the upper will have a grayish color to it. You'll need a flashlight to tell. If the internal area is black, then it's just anodized. Also Smith used dry film in the buffer tubes too.

Everybody in the comments is trashing Sightmark optics, but I feel like the reason we’re all here is because we trust Mr. Outlaw’s reviews, so if he thinks Sightmark is a decent enough brand then why shouldn’t it be? Technology is at a point now where an LED projected on a piece of glass inside an airtight nitrogen filled tube (with the ability to NOT lose zero) is such a menial thing now that even the cheapest Chinese made garbage can’t get it wrong except for the reliability aspect. So really, an Aimpoint purchase isn’t getting to be much more practical over a SIG, SightMark, or any other budget brand.

I bought one 6 months, or so, ago after Nick reviewed this gun. Mine came with a Hyper Fire trigger and it is great! HOWEVER, the chamber housing is too big. I cannot add a B.A.D. Lever 😢. I add this to ALL my AR platform rifles and all my training is with it. Was real disappointed with this, although it has been a very reliable, very shoot able gun.

Test a bunch and you'll make up your mind. Don't let price get in the way. This pistol will be a tool you'll be depending on your life for. So can you truly put a price on your life or a loved one. I'm not saying that more expensive is better per se. Another commenter said Canik is a good win...and he's correct. Canik is not super expensive and it's a very proven pistol that's very reliable. So made check out a Canik. They come in a shit ton of configurations. Good luck with your purchase and enjoy.

Tune it. Look at your ejection pattern to see how it is gassed. Change buffer weight and spring accordingly. Mid length gas tube is also gonna shoot softer than carbine length.

You could try a different combination of buffer weight/spring and/or adjustable gas block/key to soften the recoil. I believe a defensive AR should lean towards being over gassed with a heavier buffer instead of being "perfectly" gassed with the lightest functional buffer. Sacrificing some comfort for reliability.
