This verdict doesn't just affect Harley-Davidson, it includes Indian motorcycles and many other American exports, it's just that Harley is leading the fight. Tariffs have been negatively impacting American exports for decades. I remember Reagan back in the mid-eighties imposing tariffs on metric motorcycles on behalf of the then struggling post AMD Harley-Davidson, and so many of the metric brands threw fits, the tariff lasted only two years thanks to Harley telling the government the tariffs were no longer needed (as their sales were growing & growing). And remember, it's not just the European Union, there are so many more countries that put these ridiculous tariffs on American goods. There is such a thing as "fair trade".
@streetsean16 күн бұрын
Yes, that's right. This ruling just puts the tariffs on the bikes harley was building in Thailand, which i think were supposed to get around the tariffs. Lots of tariffs on a lot of things, I just only notice when it's something I like.
@patrickwalton176816 күн бұрын
@trekbsg uh it is for the most part America putting Tariffs on goods. Trumps first 4 years almost busted HD. Germany is probably the biggest customer of American goods. With the Tariffs . Sales of American goods dropped to almost zero. GM, Ford, Chrysler-Jeep all took major hits. GM had to sell off Opel for example. Ford was less of a hit. Because they produce a European line. But Mustangs didn't get sold at all. Now, if Trump keeps messing around. VW, Audi, Porsche, and BMW will close down their US operations. And go home. I myself work at a factory that builds Forklifts. We are the world's second largest producer of lifts. Since the election US Sales shot through the roof! Every one trying to get their Forklifts before the Tariffs come. We were closed for the holidays. And today is the first day of production. I can bet you after 20 January our lifts bound for the US will drop to ZERO. it will hurt America more than it will hurt us. Because those couple hundred vehicles customers in the EU and Canada will take them.
@m0rafic15 күн бұрын
The tariff was signed on April 1st 1983 and removed on October 9th 1987, that's a long two years. H-D had aprox 200,000 excess new Harleys in stock built during what turned out to be a recession. One of Reagan's main drivers for implementing the USITC plan was that it was believed that if not Congress would legislate to restrict presidential authority over trade policy. Not all motorcycles that the tariffs applied to were "metric" as you could import one from Triumph Engineering Co Ltd in the UK until they went bankrupt in August of '83. Nor did the 90,000 Honda's & Kawasaki's made in the US count in the tariffs, but it's the 160,000 large motorcycles per year imported from Japan that everyone remembers. In 1970 Harley had 100% of the over 750cc market, by 1983 they had 15% which sounds bad, but that market was much much bigger. The market was booming until it wasn't and if you're trying to sell at the top end of a market that has suddenly contracted just after you have ramped up your production, dealer network etc you are screwed. So the question is did Harley-Davidson perform a miracle and turn the business around in a few short years? Or did they sort out their quality and production problems whilst quietly selling off their previous over-production during the time the tariffs were in place. Either way a better stronger, more focused company making a better product was the result.

@m0rafic1 Thanks for this! This lays it out perfectly. I didn't know exactly how it worked. 👍
@trekbsg4 күн бұрын
@@m0rafic1 Harley doesn't have the authority to sign tariffs into and out of law, that's up to the government. Harley "petitioned" the government telling them they no longer needed the tariffs in place to compete with overseas competition after two years, when and if the government does or doesn't do something is entirely up to the government, not Harley.

Bidens first visit to the EU and NATO in November or December 21 ( I don't remember there exact dates) . He ended Trumps trade war . And within days of the Announcement HD Presented the 22 model year with normal prices. Even so my Dealership gave me 14 days after the release of the price. To withdraw from the sale. So I ordered. Wow, now you get many views and comments on this one. In Europe the Tourings from Thailand have the same price as from USA, so tariffs make no difference (on the short term, and prices are high anyways). The 2018 tariff rise from 6% to 31% due to the Trade-War-by-you-know-who did not suddenly raise the prices. Sudden price raise disturbs the market, so companies do not do that, instead in the years after, prices rise gradually to eventually compensate for the tarrifs. But do not expect prices to drop again when tariffs would be lifted, companies do not like that either, because then sales would stall due to deflation (instead of inflation) effect, consumers wait to buy because they think: "will the bike be even cheaper next year???". Prices will stay somewhat constant or have lower rise than "normal". The law suit now is on the 2021 tariff raise step (another 25%??!!) to complete the TradeWar, which indeed it looks now like this will come into effect. Again, prices will not rise 25% from one year to the other (2025 prices are not listed yet by the way !!! , in USA they are). And then we also have to wait and see in two weeks whether a new tariff increase has to come, again due to the you-know-who's-2nd-term-Trade-War. These tradewars are never good, bad for the economy, and the consumer always pays in the end .............
@streetsean16 күн бұрын
Yes, 💯 the consumer always takes the brunt of the trade war. Hopefully, the next negotiations will end up in a better "fair trade" agreement that helps all consumers. The you-know-who has talked about a lot about tariffs, and it's one of his favorite words, but again, hopefully, it works out that it's a good deal for the consumers.

If Harley-Davidson wants to skirt the tarrifs, so what? In a capitalist society governments should expect businesses to ALWAYS do what's best for their bottom line or the governments should offer the businesses and their operating environment better incentives to compete against other global manufacturers. WTF do they expect? Harley-Davidson should completely uproot from the US and focus on worldwide sales. Until the US govt gets their ish together.
@streetsean16 күн бұрын
I don't think they could, unless they changes all their bikes. The majority of sales are in the US and I would think a lot of those sales are based on the "made in USA" model.
@peterwilson803916 күн бұрын
The one thing you're maybe missing here is that the size of the southeast asian market for motorcycles is huge, compared to the North American market, or even the European market. Harley might have very good reason to believe that's where their future lies. In that context, it's interesting if they're allowing North American dealerships the option of opting out of the RevMax product lines. If their vision is to sell those bikes in Asia, why build them here, especially with Trump as President, and having to deal with the tariff issues. Now if I were in charge at Harley, I would keep on making traditional Harleys for the North American market. They have a pretty good handle on that even if their sales are less than they used to be, and if they have a market for them overseas . . . .
@streetsean16 күн бұрын
I think you're right about the southeast Asia market, but I'm not sure harley makes bikes that that market wants. Maybe those x350 and 500 models they released last year? To have a plant in Thailand would make tonnes of sense to sell those there.

Interesting info that it's only for one yr on those three models yet there still a tariff on them. Guess leave them there to be built and sell cheaper. Then in 2026 bring back to America to be made here. Then no tariff too?
@streetsean15 күн бұрын
They say it's for 1 year for all production of those models. That plant already builds them for the European market so there really wouldn't be a change there.

Do harley shift motorbikes in parts to europe and put them together in a factory in Europe. I heard a factory in spain.

Is going to go out of business by the end of the year by rejecting the offer of being bought by a Chinese company to avoid to move 100% of the motorcycle production to China as to improve the quality by making them in China to avoid of the process of Made in China 2025, and Polaris on the other hand gets the upper hand going full house in the US market by letting the US government ban CF-Moto to sell HD copies that are better quality than the original. This will leave Polaris be the only sole motorcycle company based in the US with Indian being the only US based brand sold in North America and while CF-Moto outselling Harley-Davidson in Europe in the cruiser market with their clones of HDs letting Harley-Davidson becoming the dodo bird of the motorcycle industry.

And MANY THOUGHT that DEI WAS GOING AWAY..SURPRISE !!! THEY JUST CHANGED THE NAME TO ; ESG? face-blue-wide-eyes ESG stands for “Environmental, Social and Governance.” ESG can be described as a set of practices (policies, procedures, metrics, etc. that organizations implement to limit negative impact or enhance positive impact on the environment, society, and governance bodies.

A lot of the American banks have been dropping their ESG programs since the election. Hopefully other companies follow suit

Actually tariffs come and go with trade deals and are used as bargaining chips. Been used for decades
@Prometheus197916 күн бұрын
No, Harley screwed Harley. Moving more production overseas like they just did the pan America after Harley swore to its employees that it would not. Harley has been moving production out of America and most of their parts and clothing come from China and other parts of the world. Part of having tariffs is to punish companies from moving jobs out of America.
