Cheating is cheating. The effort it takes to drive to an opponents camp to cheat with drones while trying to hide doing it, is not something to say it's over blown

Diving and appealing to the ref while you were not even touched is also cheating.

There is no FIFA rule against reconnaissance of an opponent. People have been sneaking in to practices with cameras for years. Hidden micro cameras are the latest technology. Drones give overhead views but are visible or audible. Micro mics are used in-game today to listen to huddles. The stupidity was using drones specifically in France @ the time of the Olympics which was illegal. Note Herdmann said not at major tournaments... where there are specific security legal rules. The level of cheating is insanely overblown ... should be considered like in-game offense .. considering every single team maximizes their intelligence gathering tools ... just not doing illegal things.
@HenryElliott-lf3poАй бұрын
One issue that people don’t seem to focus on. Flying a drone in Paris was illegal, so doing it was stupid. I believe it is common practice among teams in the international community. I will be interested to see what FIFA has to say.

John - if one can't get much advantage out of it, then why does even qualify to be questioned as cheating or not? All these talking heads declaring it as cheating, but I would like to see the FIFA paragraph that says a team cannot do reconnaissance on their opponent? The answer is there is NO rule. Thus, this is a BS. In competition, to be fair, one must follow the rules, nothing more. Subjective moralizing about something has no place. Follow the rules, nothing more, nothing less.

So many people dumping on John Herdman. Yes, he should not have cheated, even though most of the Futbol world has cheated in a similar fashion. (By the way, just to give this some perspective, if any of us outside of sports, had cheated like this in our jobs, we would have been fired on the spot). The bottom line is that I will always appreciate how he lifted our Canadian women's & men's teams to a completely much higher level. He inspired them & gave them a newfound confidence that just never existed in Canadian soccer before. Finishing #1 in the men's 2021/2022 quarterfinals & helping Canadians to start having terrific success in Europe, was something that I never thought that I would ever see in my lifetime. I didn't like the way that he naively insulted Croatia in the World cup, which gave them all of the revenge ammunition to play their best soccer vs Canada. It was a degree of arrogance, which was not typically Canadian at all. Still, I for one, very much appreciate that John Herdman started the Wonderful rise of Canadian soccer & now we are very fortunate to have Jesse Marsch, who picked up John Herdman's mantle & he has taken Canadian soccer to an almost unthinkable level. Despite this mess & the Croatian error, thank you John Herdman for everything that you have done for Canadian soccer/futbol!!

It's a calculated move on Herdman's part and JH is nothing if not strategic in everything he does. That is not in itself good or bad. They're dead right he is getting ahead of the narrative and will be back soon, probably New Zealand or back in England. Probably finished in Canada for the foreseeable future though.
@mccullochmikeАй бұрын
I don't chalk this up as Herdman being calculating or ahead of this. He doesn't deserve any credit. By all accounts he cheated. He lied about cheating. He didn't make himself available to be interviewed about using the drones that he lied about not using. He's only lucky that the clock didn't strike his hour while with TFC. But to me, a lot of the accolades he deserves are tainted. I no longer, and haven't for a while, thought of him as a decent person/manager. His ego got too big, too quick. From his resignation with the CANMNT on, he's been on a downward trajectory. I wouldn't hire this guy nor should anyone in England or New Zealand. He's a bit of a charlatan.

Then report the drone in France knowing Bev will implicate John, forcing him to resign and continue his career on other side of world. You guys predicted Asia, but Oceana is pretty close.
@keylow3773Ай бұрын
I’ll preface what I am going to say by stating that I have followed this story on only the most basic of levels.. In retrospect, I understand why Herdman seemed to have left the MNT so abruptly. I remember being very confused after he quit and stated something to the effect of, “I have done all I could for Canada.” Like, bro, you never won anything with the men… And that he did that before the World Cup were to take place here. He was probably getting the H-E-double hockey sticks out of Dodge.. I was one of those Canadians who kind of felt that the Dronegate outrage was a little blown out of proportion (sensationalized to a degree). I’ve been reading about conformity, and Dubs alluded to the groupthink that set in behind the scenes (CS staff not thinking there was anything wrong with what was going on). With that level of conformity, and some obvious coercion taking place, I wonder if, like what’s trickling out about Priestman, the drones weren’t the worst thing that happened.. Which would explain even more why he has, again, get out of Dodge and is, as Footy said, “Getting ahead of the narrative.” And food for thought, but how much would this have played out differently had he been more successful at TFC? I think it would have. Kind of like a team making an example of the unimportant player and cutting him when some criminal accusations/charges come up, while the star player gets a slap on the wrist when he does the same.

It's sad that it ends like this and he couldn't achieve playoffs with TFC. There was a lot of potential lost. I hope he lands on his feet wherever he goes. I can totally understand Keith Pelley not wanting to be marred into a potential coaching license suspension shitshow that could throw the season off.. specially with so many coaches in the market right now. Also, someone on the MLS sub said it.. not a good look that your only coaching successes are tainted by systemic cheating. Let's get Curtin and if that falls through (because he surely has options), Smyrniotis would be a great second choice.

We know that both Herman and Priestman used drones. Did the crazy parties and toxic culture also occur under Herdman? I know a lot of players, especially from the women circa 2012-2015, really liked him. I'm not supporting the drone/cheating, but if the culture wasn't AS bad, maybe he's at least better than Priestman?

@marioromano5387Ай бұрын
I agree with your comment on Dubsy being firm and moral in her response to the drone scandal but 'real' ??! As Sharms noted, the international community can't believe the extent of the Canadian reaction to all of this. FIFA doesn't even have a rule around gathering intelligence, let alone drones.
@jennifer9522Ай бұрын
I agree that Bev Priestman could have thought it was considered okay, as she was assistant to Herdman, and also that it happened at the olympics - she didn't try to hide it. I believe she was an assistant coach in England so maybe they fid it there too? But Herdman, no. “I can again clarify that at a FIFA World Cup, pinnacle event, Olympic Games, at a Youth World Cup, those activities have not been undertaken,” he said in July. “And I’ve got nothing else to say on that matter." So he didn't use drones at those high-level events as he knew it was wrong, but he used them otherwise. I thought he was awesome prior to all this. So sad.
