I am an 80 year old Israeli living close to the northern border. I spent the last 50 years sailing, first as an amateur and the last 30 as a professional. I was living on my boat in much targeted Ashkelon until a bout with cancer dictated a move to the north to be closer to my son and daughter. I have been watching and liking your videos for a long time, mainly because you remind me very much of a much loved English lady that I was very close to for 10 years (in southern Spain). As a history buff and a closet admirer of you I want to thank you very much for doing what you do. ❤ @peace

I grew up in violence; not on a national/regional level, but domestic. I was broken, and in many ways, still am. I learned fear, and a lack of trust in stability of any kind. I still expect the worst because I was given it by the people whose job it was to take care of me. So my heart goes out to anyone who lives with trauma, especially children. The world is going through terrible times of violence, and, sadly, it always has. Before Ukraine and the current Middle East tragedies, but maybe not so noticed by many, were all the wars in Africa (for just one example). We need to keep doing what we can to make the world a better, safer, more peaceful place. And, despite my own experience and all I wrote in that first paragraph, I know we can. I've had terrible times, but lovely times, too. I now know that I can be, and am, loved. I worked with children for 40 years, and did my best to teach them how to care for others and themselves in a giving, generous way. Trauma, I know, is a lifelong companion. It destroys and cripples. So, be gentle with everyone; you may not know what they've gone through, and even if you do, you cannot take it away. But you can make it better. One thing I tried to teach kids is that nothing really brings you happiness better than trying to give it to others. Humans are such social beings; we can be hurt by others, but we can also bring them joy, and doing so brings joy of its own. This channel brings joy to me. Your gentle, curious, caring looks into the lives of the people who've left their legacy in the Thames, Nic, mean a lot to me, and clearly to others in this, as you say great community. Thanks! #Peace, a prize we all hope for.

I was reminded of similar findings here in the USA when you discovered a small GB flag in the muck of the Thames. Our flags represent our nation ... a symbol of honor, integrity, self-sacrifice, etc. Yet, countless citizens fail the nation and the flag by not safeguarding it. Here in the USA many rally with the flag for various purposes ... hang it off their vehicle aerials or even mount it on non-sturdy poles and drive like man men through the streets ... often with disastrous results for the flag. Careless disregard has resulted in mangled, tattered or intact flags lying in muddy gutters or hanging like windswept garbage from trees or bushes. I once found five such flags lying in the mud alongside the road I was walking. I took them back to my office and washed them up in the lady's restroom. I then distributed them to coworkers to mount in their individual units. Sorry to use your channel as a sorta soapbox. But, it seem so appropriate though. Your channel is all about preserving the past, remembering those of came before us and the struggles/battles they underwent to keep family and nation safe. The mud is not the place to find our nation's flag.

Hi Nicola, the pagoda shard was really significant, seeing the world conditions as they are today. With war raging in Ukraine, and the Gama's attacks on Israel, the the attack on the hospital too, the Peace pagoda and the quote from Nippozan Myohoja, Guruji was an important reminder of how we need to act. "Civilization is not to kill human beings, not to destroy things, or to make war; civilization is to hold mutual affection and respect one another." Tobias' gift of his find was particularly significant today.

Ok Nic, my brain isn't what it use to be but I finally realized why I enjoy your videos sooo much. It's because YOU have a unique relationship with the Thames and it's inhabitants in and out of the water. Thanks for an escape from a nasty week, in which I spent my birthday in an emergency room after tripping on a new kitten in the house, and landing on a hardwood floor, face first. I was wearing fancy dress shoes with smooth leather soles, which did not help. Speaking of shoes, I was very touched by the child's shoe sole, and the fact that it showed signs of being repaired. Children outgrow shoes quickly, and I wondered how long the child must have worn those shoes, or were they hand-me-downs, perhaps worn by an older brother or sister. I appreciate how you inspire thought, and analysis, of such mundane objects. So much life in them. All the best to you. #peace

Hello Nicola! I love when you find the Bellarmine jugs/fragments. Actually I went to a high school named Bellarmine Preparatory. It is a Catholic high school in Tacoma, Wa USA named after St. Robert Bellarmine. He was known to have donated the tapestries on the walls of his rooms at the Vatican and donate them to the impoverished as blankets. When asked of his actions he said, “The walls won’t catch cold.” He lived from 1542-1621, in the same time I believe those jugs were made. Thank you so much for sharing them and all of your other finds. And May these terrible wars and genocides happening all over the world come to an end. Love will win. This is a fine video,Nicola,a fine one, indeed. I count backwards,I am just over a month gone, the sound of the river is a recent memory, which I cherish. Surrey Quay, that was a place of supreme silence,I loved that day,the waves washed upon wellies, wind washed upon my ears. I found nothing, but did not mind,I cherished my moment as a guest of The River. We spent a lovely time together. Ok,your finds!! You gotta give the false teeth to your fellow lady who larks, the mighty Borzello. That Bartman, what the heck? It isn’t salt glaze, what is its origin? Digger Dawn, she makes me smile,as I am constantly frustrated by my attempts at detecting. She brings positivity, she brings laughter,I admire her very much! And,heeeey, why is your Nkisi Kozo no longer wearing her little hat? You must know,Minkisi love to be adorned, they thrill in it❤️

I would like to share an interesting story, about my dearly departed Uncle Bevan Smith,a Welshman supreme. Now,we all know that the old School original mudlarks were destitute, they eked out a living, finding, among other scraps, tiny bits of coal. Uncle Bevan,he,as a child, scoured the train tracks, looking for coal, which fueled our local power plants, here in Ohio. He brought that coal home,to fuel the furnace in the basement. He was a rail lark❤️

Thank you for bringing such a beautiful moment of peace and calm to the world, such as it is at this time, with your wonderful videos. I can't choose my favourite find, so this time I choose the Egyptian geese and their goslings. Thank you Nicola #peace

#peace. Our favourite segment was the bit about that wonderful pagoda in the park, a beautiful symbol for peace, something that we humans talk about but never, never want to achieve on a lasting basis. The history of our species backs up this sad fact. Nicola, your research into the background of the pagoda was a treat, those from that Japanese person were so wise. We think that wooden face is a take on an historical Japanese mask. Love it.
