Now you'll see why they call the Thames a Lucky Dip! Did I get lucky or did I go away disappointed?

I was very excited when I saw a glint of gold poking out of the Thames mud! What do you think of what I pulled out? Is it what you expected? During this episode I met up with my mud buddy Tobias Neto (@Tob2n ) one of my absolute faves. Tobias usually metal detects whilst I mudlark by eye. We went to a place where Tobias has never been before. Take a look and see what we found!
I talk about Tobias''s fb page which is "Thames Foreshore Finds". I highly recommend you join it even if you can't mudlark. It's a friendly community that can answer all the questions about mudlarking that you might have. You might also be able to help them with find IDs.
Thank you for watching. And don't forget that if you want to mudlark on the Thames then you do need a permit from the Port of London Authority. They are currently not issuing any new permits. You could try to do an outing with Thames Discovery or Thames Explorer Trust. Email me via my website for details.
See you soon and thank you for watching.
Love Nicola xx

I am an 80 year old Israeli living close to the northern border. I spent the last 50 years sailing, first as an amateur and the last 30 as a professional. I was living on my boat in much targeted Ashkelon until a bout with cancer dictated a move to the north to be closer to my son and daughter. I have been watching and liking your videos for a long time, mainly because you remind me very much of a much loved English lady that I was very close to for 10 years (in southern Spain). As a history buff and a closet admirer of you I want to thank you very much for doing what you do. ❤ @peace

I grew up in violence; not on a national/regional level, but domestic. I was broken, and in many ways, still am. I learned fear, and a lack of trust in stability of any kind. I still expect the worst because I was given it by the people whose job it was to take care of me. So my heart goes out to anyone who lives with trauma, especially children. The world is going through terrible times of violence, and, sadly, it always has. Before Ukraine and the current Middle East tragedies, but maybe not so noticed by many, were all the wars in Africa (for just one example). We need to keep doing what we can to make the world a better, safer, more peaceful place. And, despite my own experience and all I wrote in that first paragraph, I know we can. I've had terrible times, but lovely times, too. I now know that I can be, and am, loved. I worked with children for 40 years, and did my best to teach them how to care for others and themselves in a giving, generous way. Trauma, I know, is a lifelong companion. It destroys and cripples. So, be gentle with everyone; you may not know what they've gone through, and even if you do, you cannot take it away. But you can make it better. One thing I tried to teach kids is that nothing really brings you happiness better than trying to give it to others. Humans are such social beings; we can be hurt by others, but we can also bring them joy, and doing so brings joy of its own. This channel brings joy to me. Your gentle, curious, caring looks into the lives of the people who've left their legacy in the Thames, Nic, mean a lot to me, and clearly to others in this, as you say great community. Thanks! #Peace, a prize we all hope for.

What I find so refreshing about all of your videos is how you incorporate nature and humanity in your content. It’s not just about mudlarking - it’s appreciating the natural beauty in the heart of a bustling first-world metropolis and treasuring those who came before you. That’s amazing! Great job, your passion for what you do is evident and tangible! Thank you for YOU! Sending you much love from here in South Africa. #Peace

Hi Nicola, thanks for commenting on the ugly world situation and for always promoting peace and kindness in your videos. Your pieces always bring me joy. Anchors are one of the things I collect because they are a symbol of #peace and my love for the ocean. Thanks for an escape from a nasty week, in which I spent my birthday in an emergency room after tripping on a new kitten in the house, and landing on a hardwood floor, face first. I was wearing fancy dress shoes with smooth leather soles, which did not help. Speaking of shoes, I was very touched by the child's shoe sole, and the fact that it showed signs of being repaired. Children outgrow shoes quickly, and I wondered how long the child must have worn those shoes, or were they hand-me-downs, perhaps worn by an older brother or sister. I appreciate how you inspire thought, and analysis, of such mundane objects. So much life in them. All the best to you. #peace

I actually loved the medieval sword pommel that Tobias found! The writing on it, as on so many things that you find, Nicola, reminds us that people are behind each piece of history. Secondarily, I love the creatures like the geese and the crab. It's great to see the Thames a healthy living river. #peace

Hi Nicola, the pagoda shard was really significant, seeing the world conditions as they are today. With war raging in Ukraine, and the Gama's attacks on Israel, the the attack on the hospital too, the Peace pagoda and the quote from Nippozan Myohoja, Guruji was an important reminder of how we need to act. "Civilization is not to kill human beings, not to destroy things, or to make war; civilization is to hold mutual affection and respect one another." Tobias' gift of his find was particularly significant today.

Your videos are so engaging. The way you narrate draws the viewer in. I'm sure I;m not the only one who feels that they are walking beside you. Hello Nicola! I love when you find the Bellarmine jugs/fragments. Actually I went to a high school named Bellarmine Preparatory. It is a Catholic high school in Tacoma, Wa USA named after St. Robert Bellarmine. He was known to have donated the tapestries on the walls of his rooms at the Vatican and donate them to the impoverished as blankets. When asked of his actions he said, “The walls won’t catch cold.” He lived from 1542-1621, in the same time I believe those jugs were made. Thank you so much for sharing them and all of your other finds. And May these terrible wars and genocides happening all over the world come to an end. Love will win. Love always eventually wins. #PEACE

Hi, from Vancouver Island. I always look forward to your videos Nicola. Todays was especially good. I particularly love the Bellimine piece but also, the car mirror. As soon as you picked it up, I saw the eye, cheek and gills of a fish. Maybe a silver Salmon. I hope you hang on to it. I also loved Tobias' sharing of the Pommel. Hope you are having a lovely day, thanks for sharing what you do.#peace.

I just love everything about your videos - the nature, your positivity and enthusiasm, the interesting stories and history, your companions. I particularly enjoy the paintings on ceramics. It would be neat to use one as inspiration to create an entirely new canvas with the piece incorporated right into the picture. Like the pagoda piece into something inspired by the current conflict. #PEACE

You can’t go wrong with Digger Dawn. She is one of my favorite people. As for what things I liked about today’s mudlark video, thank you for sharing the Thames birds and their families going about their day. Also, the 19th century pipe has reminded how seldom we see completely undecorated pipes from that time and place. The furniture leg face is my favorite found object. Finally, thank you for what you said to us at the end of this video. It mattered to me. #PEACE

This is a fine video,Nicola,a fine one, indeed. I count backwards,I am just over a month gone, the sound of the river is a recent memory, which I cherish. Surrey Quay, that was a place of supreme silence,I loved that day,the waves washed upon wellies, wind washed upon my ears. I found nothing, but did not mind,I cherished my moment as a guest of The River. We spent a lovely time together. Ok,your finds!! You gotta give the false teeth to your fellow lady who larks, the mighty Borzello. That Bartman, what the heck? It isn’t salt glaze, what is its origin? Digger Dawn, she makes me smile,as I am constantly frustrated by my attempts at detecting. She brings positivity, she brings laughter,I admire her very much! And,heeeey, why is your Nkisi Kozo no longer wearing her little hat? You must know,Minkisi love to be adorned, they thrill in it❤️

I would like to share an interesting story, about my dearly departed Uncle Bevan Smith,a Welshman supreme. Now,we all know that the old School original mudlarks were destitute, they eked out a living, finding, among other scraps, tiny bits of coal. Uncle Bevan,he,as a child, scoured the train tracks, looking for coal, which fueled our local power plants, here in Ohio. He brought that coal home,to fuel the furnace in the basement. He was a rail lark❤️

Wendy’s things are so beautiful. I adore your videos. You are inspirational, educational & nature-loving & simply a sweet soul. I never miss a video. My hubby & I make it a point to set time aside with a cup of coffee or tea & sit fully engaged with your entertaining content. We wish the same upon you. Thank you very much for all the work that you put into each of your videos. They definitely are done with the care. #peace

My favourite is the face ,corner of a piece of furniture #PEACE. Nicole you found the three faces of Eve today Tobias, wow what a find, something from 1300’s , will the museum of London ever give that find back, then to find a Victorian cross. I am with you Nicole, would love, sun on face, listening to waves, catching a glint in my eyes.

Nicola, #PEACE is one of the things you offer us through your adventures and videos. If we could respect and value diversity, live River Thames with its diverse treasures, and that you discover on each visit you make to it, maybe we would live in a better world. May God give peace to the world. We do much need it now. Love from Costa Rica.

I love all your finds. No matter how small, they all tell an amazing story. My dream is to go to the UK one day. My daughter was there last year. She loved it. I've seen Kit n Caboodles find a few different Belamine faces as well. Richard is a treasure, he helps so many with pottery finds. Simon of Sifinds found the the best for me with the Roman pot. Im in Australia. I have some wonderful ancient aboriginal stone tools and old glass wear but in Australia it is not that old. I would love to find some roman goodies. Would so love to go with the Hovercrafts out to the mud flats. You have some great adventures, lucky you. You were the first mudlarker i watched, many years ago. I do watch you, Si and Kit and the Northerns. Great to learn so much from you all. Blessing to all #Peace and love
