Strange to think of the thousands who sleep under the waves at the hands of pirates and the crowns of europe so many gone within a relatively short time

historically pirates were largely supported by some goverments and their numbers started falling when policy of supporting pirates became less used. though it is true that often pirates were anti-authoritarian and many of them game from sailors who didn't like their captains and joined assaulting pirates. they also sometimes freed slaves of slave ships they attacked. also this is amazing song

kall3 Pirates supported by governments are called privateers. They didn't hoist the black.

they did actually. and also many of those who officially weren't privateers could use friendly countries ports. but yes at 18th century supporting pirates became less common and then there were more those "neutral" pirates. but at the same time their numbers went down.

kall3 Interesting. Do you have any examples? I'd love to explore that further. I've read about Tortuga hosting many pirates, but I've also read that they hanged many of them. Perhaps that's why I assumed what I did.

TitaniumX especially some small british islands were given to pirates in exchange of them defending islandsand bullying spain and many of stolen goods were sold to friendly countries harbors. however in 18th century trade started to takeover and supporting pirates became rare and hangings more common. of course countries always hanged pirates who attacked them. but i cant remember dates or names and i haven't really read especially about pirate history so can't really help you any more. im sure there is lot of books about it.

The irony being that the majority of pirates or 'privateers' were in the employ of the british crown.....

also those who where privateers where mostly poor people who saw a way to make a living so when it is decided that there is no longer a use for them so it is pretty understandable that they with the ship they were given goes out to rob and plunder.

i do not recall saying that any of the acts of the pirates were to blame on the pirates. i just said that privateers were mostly poor so when given a job and Money and then have it taken away once Again can make people angry.

I would like to see megadeth or metalica do this song they probably already did it and have it under a differnt name or something but any way raise a glass for the black flag pirate flag and also another rebel flag also the yellow don't tread on me flag is a rebel flag too ive learned and all the southern flags are rebel to of course so put all ur rebel flags in the air and waive em like u just don't care thats gonna be my next song

At the time when pirates were peaking "anarchy" meant nothing like what you think it does. The vocab around political philosophy and egalitarian social movements was completely different from what we use today. communist was at least in the ballpark - urban, non-elite, uprising against the state, church and rich in cities (commune). Oh, and sailors would strike the sails. And workers go on strike. Go figure.
