My wife bought this for me this year for my birthday, which was 44 years to the day that I first saw Rory. I was a fresh 20yo on that day, stood in the front row within touching distance of Rory, and shook hands with him at the end of the Concert. This set means a lot to me, and I’m so glad you reviewed it.

Hats off to Daniel Gallagher for managing Rory's legacy in such a fine manner. I'm looking at the box set now and still gob smacked by its sheer offerings. I couldn't even imagine something like this could happen as a very young Rory-fan in the 70s hunting for vinyl bootlegs, cassette recordings on Westbourne Grove from these BBC (and other) sessions. Just glad to be alive now to enjoy all these fantastic box sets being issued. Thin Lizzy 1976 is another top-five for this year.

Thanks for the video Phil. The set is amazing. The intensity of Rory's playing makes every disc a joy to listen to. I went through all of them and will do so again. Not a single sec wasted. This is n't a boxset were you listen to 10 different mixes of the same album. Every concert deserves to be heard and has its own energy and feel to it. So enjoy the rest of the boxset Phil.

Yeah !! fantastic , they don't make em ! like him anymore I remember seeing him at the Music Hall in Aberdeen 1973 I was right up at the front of the stage & being amazed at the sound he was producing from this battered looking guitar with the varnish flaking off aah !! such memories Phil 😊

The most persuasive voice on KZbin! Seriously Phil massive kudos for doing this as I, like many others, passed Rory by for the holy cooler trinity of Sabbath, Purple and Zeppelin. Anyway I misled myself into thinking that a guitarist using a slide was a wimp. Believe it or not! How bloody wrong I was! I’m still apologising for my total lapse of taste as I enter my into the void of my 70’s 😱 So my preorder of the vinyl set duly arrived on release day. To say I was blown away is an understatement! But I wasn’t surprised as I’m quite a collector of Rory’s BBC stuff on vinyl, sessions or otherwise. I’m a fan of the BBC music archives full stop from the Radiophonic workshop and beyond. There’s just something magic about the BBC sound. So I went looking for this box set on CD/Blu-Ray and I was aghast at how quickly it had already sold out. In fact my favourite record shop had 9 sets left on the release date. By Monday they were all gone!!!!!!!!! Thankfully I managed to nab another online retailer’s very last copy plus a 10% discount as I was a first customer. Couldn’t believe it. Paid for it on Wednesday last and I actually received it 19 hours later! Fantastic service! Had a brief listen to the very first CD and I was again blown away by both the playing and the sonics. I said to myself surely CD shouldn’t sound this good??????????????? I’ll leave it at that as I continue to catch up with Rory’s muse and wonder how in the name of the most high did he cram all that stunning music into his daily living. I bow in awe. Safe to say he’s bypassed all my favourite guitarists one by one as I get closer and closer to my own final destination. Finally, as Phil put it so well, all the important stuff is there to be cherished on this stunning box set and played/watched whenever you feel like it. More importantly you actually own it 🎸 God bless you Rory wherever you are and a humble THANK YOU……

Great review Phil ❤😂 I am noticing in the comments section that this box set , as truly wonderful as it is , just maybe a bridge too far . In Australia it sells for over $500 . We , like our brothers and sisters in the UK are suffering through a massive cost of living crisis so boxsets like these just seem to be way out of reach. I love music and i have followed you for a while but i feel like i am looking through a window drooling over things i can no longer afford. I feel i must become a minimalist and just revisited and enjoy what i already have. There is a bigger issue that maybe we don't talk about. These sets are basically aimed at 55 + year old music fans and they are deeply appreciated and enjoyed but economics rears its ugly head . Keep doing what you do Phil but i think i will have to become a " passive" observer admiring from a distance. God bless 😂❤

I totally understand and as mentioned elsewhere I want to start to do more features on appreciating what we already have. Even then however I might feature something that is no longer in print and costs a lot! $500 sounds very steep for this set which is about £118 here. Thank you 🙏

fabulous boxset for sure. So much great Rory within. Love top own it but but for me lot of money for it all when I have so much of it already. I taped some of the shows off the radio back in the day onto cassette and have transferred some to CDr. Plus have bootleg CDs of many. I am sure it is worth it. But with limited cash and so much being released all the time it is hard to keep up with everything coming out from the archives, let alone new releases.

As always Phil, you bring your own flavour to presenting these sets. My CD and vinyl monger let me hold the 20 disc box for a minute saying "I'm not allowed to sell it today, only tomorrow." That was just 7 days ago. Now it appears to be gone already, everywhere. Kudos to those fans who got hold of it or would have sold the proverbial kidney to get hold of it. I love Rory Gallagher's output, especially the live stuff, but 18 CDs is a bit much as some comments indicate. I got the double CD instead and I'm sure I'm going to enjoy that. My only gripe about it is that both Moonchild and Shadowplay are missing. Still, I hope at some point a stand alone release of the August 1980 Reading gig - which is probably the pinnacle of Rory's hardrocking days - will be made available. I loved Ted McKenna's drumming on Stagestruck. Nevertheless, over the years I've more and more come to appreciate the somewhat subtler and more diverse music-making of the four-piece group on Irish Tour. I think we can all be grateful that Rory's gig with a certain 60s rock band didn't go through.

You can't beat the likes of Irish Tour 74, Stage Struck and Live In Europe, but the material on this box is not that far behind them. Absolutely love it.

I still haven't finished Marillion- Clutching At Straws and that came out a few years ago!! And a plethora of other box sets... I placed all my discs in Japanese style inner sleeves. None of the discs were scuffed, but there is no harm a little more protection.

This is a real sore point for me currently. I ordered this about a week before its release with HMV because "the big retailer" was out of stock. Almost two weeks after release and I am still waiting for HMV to source a copy, they keep making excuses about "supplier issues". I think I am probably going to be out of luck with this one because it's now out of stock everywhere - except for "scalpers" already trying to sell it for £100 more. They can "get knotted".

I am a fan but I do think this is a tad overwhelming. There is only a finite amount of time and so much to play. After a while there’s a danger that you buy stuff just to own it as opposed to really playing it. Just my reflections really as a serial collector! Cheers, Chris

I Love Rory and Thin Lizzy but all these box sets are getting ridiculous . Normal working class people cannot afford the best part of £ 200 quid on cds. I think some people live in their own little bubble believing that everyone can keep up with the You Tube Gang. I have news Phil they cannot.

I totally agree with you. I have made an exception with these but the money came out of my savings for the Rory Box Set. I know for me going forward I want to make more of 'appreciating what I have'. In days of old when there were lots of record labels they would schedule their releases to ensure they did not all arrive at once. That seems to be out the window now with all these huge sets aimed at the same demographic at the same time. The Thin Lizzy set is about £45 - £50 and I felt that was excellent value. This Rory set is expensive but when you look at the number of discs it is worth it to me, especially when you compare it to single album box sets like the YES Fragile one for example. Phil

This type of collection could be done for many, many bands that recorded sessions and live concerts for the BBC, there archives must be the best in the country, if not the world. Just imagine what they could do with ALL the bands they recorded at the Monsters Of Rock Festivals in the 80s.. Now that would be a box set. (if the bands don't get too greedy of course). That being said, i love this set, it's been on non-stop since it arrived. One of the best box sets i own and i own a lot. Great video me ode. Only gripe i have is you can only see the track listings in the book. Should have been issued in their own sleeves.
