Nene, Todd and Mina... I am very touched and moved by your very personal story. Thank you for sharing your experience and perspective with us. Please know that my father was a conscripted child soldier in the CIA Special Guerilla Units (SGU) commanded by MAJ GEN Vang Pao. He fought for 10 years between age 14 and 25, then we had to flee the Pathet Lao and invading N. Vietnamese forces by night. It took us about a year through treacherous uncharted mountain passes and thick jungle to reach safety in Thailand. What a tragedy all of us Lao citizens suffered and survived... some of us anyway. Both sides suffered the tragic horrors of the Secret War. Consequently, we were fortunate enough to be resettled in the U.S. when my father was 28 and I was just a little tike. Sadly, he died several years ago in his early 70's and never saw the Laos he loved so much again. Despite the blessings of America, he and his compatriots longed for the simple life in Laos and the country they bled and died for, not unlike your father and his comrades, I'm sure. My point is both sides loved Laos, and they did what they thought was best for the country. Too bad it was at gunpoint rather than in the arena of competing ideas. With that said, I'd like to think that most of us have put this horrible chapter behind us. So many have lost so much, - life, limb, liberty, loved ones, and even a beloved homeland for some of us. Like you, I was also just 5 or 6 when we escaped Laos. So, I remember much of the horrors of the exodus. Today, as a 25-year U.S. Army veteran with multiple combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, I long to put the horrors of all wars behind me with the hope that love will prevail, and peace will become a true reality. Your family did what they had to do, and we did what we had to do to survive the Secret War as pawns of more powerful forces. Nowadays, a lot of elderly Hmong Americans are still wary of the Pathet Lao government like it is also wary of them too. Fortunately, they are a small minority since most have passed away. However, I truly hope that those of us who inherited this shared history will continue to follow the example of reconciliation set by Nelson Mandela after the sad legacy and tragedy of Apartheid in S. Africa. Now that I'm no longer in the Army, I long to visit Laos and hopefully meet the three of you someday soon. FYI, my wife is White, so we have a cross-cultural family too. I would love to introduce the new Laos to her and our young children instead of the Laos I fled in terror. My daughter is going on 5, so I think she and Mina would have a wonderful time getting to know each other. She would likely be a couple of years older too by the time we make it there. Beautiful comment. I worked with Lao refugees starting in 1975. My Lao-American wife and I have been in Lao since 2001. So many changes for the good. Wait a few years for your daughter to get a little older so that she will remember. What part of the US are you in? Maybe we know some of the same people.

My family was resettled in the plains of SD in 1978, but we followed relatives to St. Paul, MN a few months later. I grew up there, went on Uncle Sam's many "world tours" and back to MN. Eight years ago, I had the opportunity to do graduate school at Harvard University, so I rounded out my 25-year Army career in the Boston area. We loved New England so much; we made it home. You may have a point about waiting for my daughter to grow up a little bit more first. Where are you from?

Thank you for this special video. My partner is Lao and I always tell them they should be very proud of the Pathet Lao that fought for freedom against the French and Americans who had no regard for the locals at all. The way the Lao forgive and forget is an example to us all.

The government had a meeting a few weeks ago with about 500 people who were born in Lao but are now citizens of other countries. I know for me I love history from all views, bad things happen in war but you are right you have to make the effort to move forward. Brilliant!!! Todd my brother,,this video instantly moved to my top three favorites! This was just excellent. I have mad respect and love for my sister,Neenee! I'm just so proud of her for talking about this. What a story about her grandfather,,that was the froggies that did that? Neenee should be rightly proud of her family. They were in a war that was unjustly dumped upon them and they were fighting for justice and right.. I feel honored that she chose to share this. I'm thankful that she was able to meet elders that she is related to and that remembered. To me,,this was very moving,,and actually historical. Todd,,this is the area you should build a small native house,,to summer at. Just sayin' lol to me,,its always moving to hear the elders talk. I was never ever one of those kids,,when I was a teen,,that ignored older family. I took my Grandma on roadtrips,,clear up until she was 85,,she loved traveling with me because we'd stop and look at places,,go to museums,,etc. I always had fun with my grandparents. Thank you Todd and a big thank you to sister Neenee. Glad my niece got her swimming hole ❤❤❤❤😂. I had my giant puppy with me on a trip to Billings,,and I have a camping box in the back of the Tahoe all the time. It had a can of bear spray in it,,strong pepper spray,,he somehow got that box open ,,got that can and punctured it,,blasted himself with strong pepper spray. He didnt have a pleasant time,,and the next morning,,he puked his guts out,,and it was all orange like the spray. By afternoonyesterday,,he was fine,,back to normal. Puppies!, lol,, lastly, a Dad report,,monday I took him for tests pretty valve surgery,,and they put 2 more stents in veins of his heart,,one was 90 percent blocked. Is was in an area that hard to see in ct scans or other normal tests,,so it was a complete surprise. He had to send about 30 hours in the hospital. Had to take him up today for a series of tests,, about 3 hours worth. So now we have a date,,Dec. 11th for his valve replacement. The doctor said for his age,,he is in remarkable shape,,and mentally strong,, that even at 89 hes a good candidate for this procedure. They will go thru a vein in his groin,,that goodness..I definitely wouldnt wish a chest crack on him. So there's an update for that. Thank you Todd and Neenee for this journey! When the little kids were getting those clothes I love seeing their precious faces. For a year, my wife and I were part of a private school startup in Veintianne. We fell in love with Laos and the Lao people. We miss our students. (our Lao babies - they were Kindergarten to 2nd grade.) The faces of the kids in the village feed my spirit. The year I lived in Laos, I sat many evenings with my Lao landlords, their family, their friends and neighbors drinking & eating. They knew I was from the U.S. (who dropped literally MILLIONS of bombs on Laos. - Bombs that are still killing and maiming people.) BUT when I asked them why they are so nice to me. They said things like ..."That's over, far in the past. Besides, it wasn't YOU who did any of that." There's always much more to the history of wars and how people are affected and how they respond. Those who have not experienced it would be wise to withold judgment. As someone who has lived in 9 countries over a 40 year span, the Lao people are LOVELY people!!! I learned so much from "my Lao "family" (their honorary designation for me). This is why I love this channel. ❤

I'm a 75yo Australian bloke, who at 19 yo missed out on the National Draft to go and fight communists, I lost a good friend in the Vietnam war. Im a city boy raised in a city that i traveled on city trains and busses in the 70s. I was fortunate to travel in the summer to my uncles farm. to see the log cabin my mother was born in and get a glimpse of farm living. I also come from a group that accepts you regardless of age race sex creed religion or lack of religion. I just wished one of those friends happy Thanksgiving I also wish it to your family. That's a short (very short) history. I've learned history is invaluable. I was in tears looking at this video i was not half way through. The joy of seeing Neenee, your daughter and that drone footage of her fathers village (Huay Hong) is also invaluable. It's one of those WE DID IT moments.

War is a terrible thing. Both sides suffer untold hardships in battle. And yet the world still hasn't learned that in the end everyone loses in one way or another. Neenee, you should be rightly proud of your heroic parents who defended their homeland for what they believed in. One can only admire people who are prepared to stand up for their beliefs, and not be judgemental. The past is the past and time has moved on, all that was done back them has shaped Laos as it is today and who are we to say who was right and who was wrong. I am so glad that Neenee is documenting her family history, so that it will never be forgotten. My father was a Conscientious Objector in WWII and when I was younger at school, when children asked "what did your Dad do in the war?" I used to tell them that he was a fighter pilot and made up stories about him. I was too scared and perhaps ashamed to tell the truth that he was a CO and went to prison for his beliefs before he went to work on the land. Now I realise that he was a great man who took a stand for what he believed in, right or wrong and suffered for it. Be proud of all those who are prepared to stand up for their beliefs and celebrate them. Those "rock trees" were amazing almost like a petrified forest where trees have over centuries become stone due to calcium deposits when the area was under water millions of years ago. Another masterpiece of a vlog Todd. All three of you are much loved and respected for all that you continue to do for the people of Laos, whatever tribe they come from. I have great sympathy for NeeNee: My wife's family from Vietnam was divided between supporters of the old French regime on the one hand, and the communists fighting against the colonial government on the other. In the end, the French supporters left the north for Saigon in 1954, then went to France in 1975. The victors stayed in the north and eventually did well, but it was 50 years before they overcame fighting the Japanese, French, Americans, and Chinese (1940-1990). Please thank her for sharing...

Todd I'm as American as apple pie and the way I see it Nee Nee's dad was a soldier who did his duty for his country and IS in every sense of the word a HERO. She is and should be VBERY proud of him and her heritage. I am a Viet Nam era veteran and I hold no Ill will toward the Vietnamese people or the Lao or anyone else in SE Asia. Believe me at 18 years old I was NOT disappointed when we were told in boot camp that the cease fire was in effect and less than a year later that the war was officially over. I don't care who won or lost. To me there was no winner. We all lost as far as I was concerned. So tell Nee Nee for me to hold her head up high and be proud of her father. He did what he had to do and he did it well from what I have been able to gather from your videos. God bless you both for all you do .

We all sadly had our sacrifices, and once it was over, it was over. We took my in-laws back to visit Lao. My father in-law fought against the communist government. He was soooo worried about what would Happen to him if he went. They welcomed him and us with open arms. Was beautiful to see old enemies be able to break bread with each other and understand where both had came from and went thru. I’m Lao. We came to US in 1982 as refugees. My dad and uncle fought against the pathet lao. He’s in his 80s now. He said doesn’t hold a grudge against the commies. What happened happen and there’s no point of bringing up the past.

Most Americans have moved on from the Vietnam war.....and many vets of the war are somewhat tortured souls..... We have many, many Laotians in my small city in America and they are welcome with open arms. Lao was just caught in the middle of things. I still think its cool Neenee is a Generals daughter. Really appreciate the last few videos with this historical content. I have been hesitant to visit Lao given the history of America's past....I encountered some negitivity 10 years ago in Savannakhet so never went back...maybe its time..

Neenee thank you for sharing your story. As you said life has moved on and you should not feel any 'shame' if that is the right word, for things that happened before your time. I hope you dont get much negativety....your father is part of a history of that part of the world. Also, as you say communism is different in various parts of the world. What your vids have shown me is that the 'communist' Laos help the various villages with building and offering employment. Much to be admired.

The Pathet Lao killed my wife’s grandfather and because of that her whole family had to struggle. The wounds are deep on the border of Thailand and Laos. Lost land and lost family. Whole family wealth just disappeared over night. Her family hates the communists.

There’s still a lot OG’s that still hate the U.S for what they’ve done to Laos 🇱🇦 and a lot of families did loss their dads and grandparents. I loss my dad when I was barely 4 or 5 years old and my mom raised 7 kids by herself since my dad passed away after we came to the USA in 1980 and sometimes i always wonder if we would be where we’re at now if it wasn’t for the war and the help of our sponsors for bringing the whole family to the USA. I wished that the Laos government would be better to make and effort to make the country better and modernize the country more because as of right now they’re still way behind from other countries

I am not sure what an "OG" is but few Lao I know have any bad feelings about the war. As for modernizing the country, there is a good train that is more modern than anything you will find in the US. Also many other areas where I think Lao is an easier place to live than much of modern US. Health, prisons, drugs, homelessness, and communal conflict are all much worse n the US than in Lao. So I agree Lao is less modern than many other countries, but I don't think being modern is always that great for ordinary people.

I understand her feeling here Todd. People now a day's, call progressives, commie's and discriminate. They are ignorant of history and how poor people were looking for a better way to govern, so as to give them a hand up, not keep them down! Sometimes you have to shake things up to get change and fairness in policy. I am not a communist, but understand, what these people were up against, with no other options. Many Communist country have been corrupted, but the same can be said for other government systems.

I was in the US Navy during th 25:39 e end of the Viet Nam war. The past is the past. I'm proud to be American but don't like what happened. Hope we can leave all that evil behind. If politicians kids had to go to war there would be no war.(I ain't no senators son)

Thank you for sharing the information Todd and Neenee. We all hope Laos will grow and prosper into the future and see the light and not let China to buy and control Laos. This is the present threat. Lao are a beautiful people. Nobody wants to see China steal and control the wealth of Laos. We have seen what China are trying to achieve with dept trap diplomacy. We have seen what they have done to Tibet and Hong Kong, and their aggression in the SCS to take Taiwan. I hope you don’t mind me stating this issue on your page. Thanks Matt

I've been a long time follower of your channel and I think that this episode is the best I've seen. Neenee should never have to hide her pride for her family and relatives for their contribution to the defence of their country against invaders. Just about every person you drive past or have an encounter with that is over 50 years old would have a similar story of service to their country and survival.The history that you are uncovering and the myriad of stories that exist in the old peoples lives need documenting as it would make a very good book. As a side note Van Morrison is the perfect soundtrack.

No, this where you are historically incorrect. It was a civil war between the King and the communists. Nobody went to invade Laos. Both sides received help from their proxies. The King had the help of the US military. The communists had the help of the Vietcong. It is evident now that Laos is no better off today than under the kings rule. The country is about the collapse economically from chronic corruption and over 10 billion in dept to China from high interest loans. Sad days ahead for the people of Laos.
