Todd now you know what's I'm talking about the Lao PDR police officer, they stop you for only one reason they ask your for cash and if you hand them some money they let you go. the more cash you gave them the faster they let you go, what's a corruption country.
@NowinLao

Actually no, I don't know what you're talking about. We've never had to bribe for doing nothing wrong. The bribe is always to get out of larger fine. Many times we've been stopped and our car papers and licenses were in order and been free to go. I suggest if they are asking for money for nothing, you ask for a receipt. See what happens then 😉

Hey brother,,I'm 3 days late watching! Lol been busy. To me,,that dessert looks like egg custard,,or at least what we call it. To us,,scalloped potatoes are thin slices potatoes with various types of cheese,,baked for 45 mins in the oven. Very tasty! Your version looks damned tasty too. The weather looked perfect on the day you were traveling. The Khmer Rouge tried to revert the name of Cambodia back to Khampachea,,but I think they,,the red Khmer,,,left such a vile taste in the mouth of humanity that they started using Cambodia again . I'm sure you already knew that lol,,just typing in a crazed fit! Lol glad you guys had fun,,Ttyl,,,Marlon

That is the street coffee? So tasty. I love it but not that strong! I think the rice cake is rice flour and maybe arrowroot and coconut milk and sugar. When I was in Australia, my Lao teacher there used to make it for me sometimes and I vaguely remember that is what went into it. It is delicious!

Potato scallops in the 'Gong. I've had the Lao/Laos debate several times. There are no words in Lao (and Thai) that end in the 's' sound. So the Lao just say 'Lao'. Teaching English, the trouble I had reminding my students to include the 's' at the end of plurals.

To Aussies and broadly American people this cake is not potato-cake but "Far" , a cake brought to Laos by Bretons from Brittany during the time Laos (or Lao country) was a French condominium. By the way it was a Breton, Pavie, who helped the old King of Luang Phrabang to escape from the Ho(chinese) invasion and deter the Thaï to put hands off Laos. Read Pavie's memory book : " A la conquète des coeurs". I think NiNi knows a lot about that part of history of her delightful country. Sokdi deu.

We were pulled over Phi Mai 2008 coming home from Thalat, a couple of kilometres from the town. My wife was driving. A young traffic policeman pulled us over and got a shock of his life when he saw we were falang. He signalled to his commanding officer to come over. In reasonable English, the senior guy asked where we're from. I told him Vientiane. Got a strange look. Then my wife said Australia. His face lit up and told us he has a cousin in Sydney. He didn't even ask for documents, told us to drive safely and saluted as we drove off. We still laugh about it.

Hi from Seattle Washington USA! I really enjoy your videos, and hope to visit Laos sometime. In America, we traditionally hear about the evils of communism, it's oppressive nature, etc. I don't see that in your videos. It looks as free as Thailand. Just curious though, have you ever experienced anything from the communist government that has caused you any worry or stress? For example, police confiscating things, suspicious government eyes on you, requirements to attend community meetings, or been questioned about loyalty to Lao government, etc.
@NowinLao
@NowinLao 2 жыл бұрын
Well I hope to see you here one day soon 👌 No, nothing like what we've been raised to believe communism is. Lao is very relaxed.. you leave the government alone and they leave you alone. We're currently traveling Laos, and as of now we have traveled to every province. The only time our details were taken and asked what we were there for was last year when we explored Long Tieng. That's understandable knowing the history of the place. (CIA secret war headquarters) We were still fine to go where we liked tho 👌

@chrisperkins7331
@chrisperkins7331 2 жыл бұрын
Lao is a lot more laid back than Vietnam, probably because there are so few people here (only7m). As for business it all depends if you have to make money as opposed to just wanting something to do. There are a good number of expats who have made a nice place to be and rely on outside income to pay the bills. but It is possible to make a good living. I ran a G/H for 4 years and so had little expense as I lived on site. One thing I would add is you need a Lao partner to do anything.
@trianglehat6994
@trianglehat6994 2 жыл бұрын
@chris perkins cheers Chris. Personally, I'm not interested in a relationship. Definitely seems more chilled than Vietnam (big cities anyway), I just returned from one of many trips to Cambodia which I love also. Vietnam is just getting ridiculous with documents. After 16 years, still treated like a tourist. I find Cambodia is much friendlier and easier on the ears. I may come take a look at Laos next year.

Just to let you all know from my life in Southeast Asia, Thailand and Cambodia also call Laos “Lao”. I don’t know if this is true but the French are the ones whom put on the ‘s’ on Lao.

In fact the Portuguese and the Spanish were calling it "Laos" 300 years before the French arrived. But back then in the 16th/17th centuries pretty much the entire inland region of northern SE Asia was called "Laos" because Europeans were pretty clueless as to what was there. The adjective "Laotian" is the one that really gets my goat haha
