I hope they maintain that level of integrity we see now. It feels like once they go back and start fleshing out old characters that we only really know about in legend they lose part of their originality. Take Bardock for example, originally a ruthless Saiyan warrior who wouldn't hesitate to kill an enemy.....then they went back and wrote a little more about him and with each rewriting or addition, it feels like he becomes less of a ruthless warrior and more like they're trying to rewrite him as a hero of justice or something. And don't get me started on Itachi, that was more of a straight up retcon although.....not terrible bad.

Erm actually Unohana first met kenpachi after the quincy war. The scar on Unohana was a mistake and was later corrected with the blu-ray release.

A couple things... the OG Goteii weren't necessarily stronger than the current ones, just far more ruthless and willing to sacrifice anything in order to get things done. They weren't going to let themselves get put on the back foot just because some weaklings got hurt and/or killed, unlike the modern guys. Look at Shunsui getting shot because he was distracted by Yamamoto's death... none of the OG would let something like that phase them. Secondly, the Quincy at the time didn't have access to Volstandig and likely didn't have Schrifts. Yhwach and the surviving Quincies came up with these techniques to give them an advantage they didn't have in the first war. So, the success of the first war vs the failure of the second isn't really really reflective of the strength of the respective Goteii eras.

From what we saw of the flashback, none of the Captain Class Goteii members were killed, much less by Yama... but, there is proof that Yama is at least responsible for incinerating the corpses of the fodder Shinigami, as he crushed them underfoot alongside the dead Quincies. From what I understand, it's not that Yamamoto has to directly kill somebody to have their corpse become part of his Bankai, but rather he has to incinerate the body before it decays into spirit energy and returns to the land of the Soul Society.

They will team up with the previous Kenpachis, who also ended up in Hell, to fight the current Gotei 13 and Vizards (whom are allowed to use their masks) in the Hell Arc.

You're saying they're captains of squads but the actual court guard squads did not exist back then. Gotei 13 was just that, 13 badasses, only referred to as "captains" in the present because of their relative roles and strength. Jushiro and Shunsui were the first captains of the Court Guards quoted by Yama himself, the first Gotei didn't have squads. Chika was not the leader of squad 2. Also there was literally a flashback that explains Yoruichi becoming the captain of squad 2 while being the shihoin clan head and being the one who turned it into the stealth force, so there's more evidence to support Yoruichi being the first squad 2 captain, though if other shihoins were to be captains of any squad it would be fair enough to assume it'd be squad 2. But nothing about the original gotei 13 supports the idea that they even had numbered squads back then.

The power scaling is based off Yhwach’s comments to Yamamoto. Yamamoto no sold a direct attack from a new generation Stern Ritter using bankai and obliterated him with a single strike from his Shikai. He then went immediately to Yhwach who claimed Yamamoto had become comparatively very weak compared to how he was during the original war. Yhwach stated that the original Gotei 13 were so brutally powerful that even he couldn’t help to respect them even if they were enemies. They dude literally walked into the Soul Society, saw the current state of the Gotei 13 and said that the *true* Gotei 13 died 1000 years ago because he was so utterly unimpressed with the current version vs the version that defeated him.

@@ethanquirk28 Yes and also no. Current Yamamoto was actually objectively stronger than his past self in places that matter. For example, his bankai was far stronger than it was in the past, and that's where most of Yama's actual power lies at the end of the day. He's also smarter and has more experience. Yhwach comments about old gotei 13 weren't really directly comparing power but rather philosophy, yhwach believes in ruthlessness and pragmatism above everything else and anyone who isn't as savage as him is weak in comparison even if they were strong individually. He believes that the old gotei was strong because they were ruthless, and since the new gotei isn't as ruthless even if they are rather strong they're still going to get wrecked because they won't go that extra mile to force out a win.

The originals had that attitude of we going to battle and one of us is not coming back from it... and with that they went ham off the bat and just demolished... unlike the new captains that have to transform to do damage and they wait too long as if they trying to save the enemy they fighting... these originals really put in the work and may have dominated their powers and swords or was truly one with the nature of their swords... unlike waffling Ichigo and many of the new squad captains.... its as if they fear the nature of their swords....and its power in many cases....where as the originals were down to get things done and revealed in their true nature ultimately truly being the sword itself.... if you truly know yourself you will not waver in power or strength....LOL
