Despite this being a recap episode with sprinkled lore I actually really liked seeing all the important fight scene moments. It made me realize that the Prince’s Rose is the White rose, and when Utena loses she doesn’t get the White rose anymore, but a Pink rose. But Touga doesn’t get the White rose when he wins, he isn’t the Rose Bride’s Prince.
@Jabroniville3 жыл бұрын
oh cool- I hadn't noticed the rose color shift for Utena until you called attention to it! Where does the prince show a white rose here? Is that the thing he's sitting on?
@lynneo88698 жыл бұрын
I think the first duel was called Amitei because Utena's reason for fighting was friendship with Anthy. The second duel was Choix because Utena made the choice to rescue Anthy from Saonji's cruel "ownership." The third was called Raison because Miki was fighting for his reason to live-- his "shining thing," which he hoped to find in Anthy. The second was Amour because Jury was fighting due to ruined love and the bitterness resulting from it. Alternatively, it could be called "love" because Anthy showed her love for Utena by making the miracle occur (having the sword skewer Jury's rose as it fell). Adoration refers to Nanami's brother complex. :P The next battle, Conviction, was so named because of Utena's strong determination to protect Anthy, although she ended up losing. The final duel was named Soi because Utena fought for her sense of self, for her identity as a female "prince" and protector of Anthy. Also, a note on character colors and rose meanings in Hanakotoba: Red: Love. Touga is driven by love (for power perhaps, or a sick sort of love for Anthy?). Jury's orange rose could be a shade of red, love, or could be related to the peach rose, which is associated with pride. Yellow: jealousy. Well, we all know why Nanami's rose is yellow. :P Blue: Accurate information was difficult to find, but it seems Blue Roses can represent intelligence, hope, or unattainable dreams. Any of those fit with Miki. His hope in finding his shining thing, his dream being unattainable, and his notable intelligence. Green: actually, green roses have no known meaning in Hanakotoba. Finally, White: purity, purity of feelings, devotion. Utena's feelings of love for Anthy.

I think Touga is more so a manipulator of love. :/

Red is also used to symbolize ambition and (usually sexual) power. In the past I've heard of blue roses being used to symbolize fantasy.

I thought the first duel was because Saionji made Wakaba cry by cruelly mocking her feelings for him.

Lynne O What does the pink rose mean? And the black/purple one at the end?
@ConvincingPeople7 жыл бұрын
Lynne O While I think you're on the money with the duels, the colour symbolism in the show seems to align more closely to the virtues and divine powers associated with the Tree of Life in the Jewish Kabbalistic tradition: Green with the sphere of victory, which sometimes is interpreted more liberally as "perdurance" or "eternity;" blue with compassion or mercy; orange with "splendour," which really is more like "enlightenment" or the illumination of the righteous path; yellow (and sometimes pink!) with "beauty" in the sense of balance and "rightness" with the world; red with strength of will; and purple with the meeting of the physical world with the spiritual. The Black Rose Saga makes some of this even more explicit, what with Mikage's dilemma and the association of black with the sphere of understanding and the seeking of wisdom, and then you have white and grey representing the pure essence of the divine and its interactions with the rest of the Tree respectively... it's all a lot to unpack. Heck, the Tree of Life shows up in this episode in the stained glass!

Anyone notice the white rose being used like a censor bar?
@emocomebackfromhell8 жыл бұрын
+Vanessa Rodriguez I don't think it's a censor bar, but I'm not sure though. I really don't see why they'd censor most of the scenes really.
@atiyan.73728 жыл бұрын
Apparently it's not being used to censor anything. It's symbolic (all the roses are). If I remember correctly, white roses symbolize rebirth

Nah, the whole series has repetitive scenes. They already were low budget. This was like the cheesy sitcom clips show, where they set up a plot that requires them to revisit the series thus far.
@boomahwolf12188 жыл бұрын
Its not that Utena had a low budget, it's just that most of it went towards the OST

Does anyone know which meaning of reason "raison" is supposed to translate to? Reason as in logic, or reason as in 'purpose'. Or is the ambiguity intentional?
@ILikeBlackMage8 жыл бұрын
+tangent94 usually you use it as in "raison d'être" which is closer to the latter; it literally means "reason to exist"
@Blaqjaqshellaq6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't doubt that ambiguity is intended--you get a lot of that in Japanese culture.
@LightningStrike12125 жыл бұрын
It refers to Miki trying to use reason to win Anthy, AKA using reason to persuade girls to be with you. Miki is presented as a character who's really good at math and who corrects Anthy's math test (overriding her logic with his).

Can you be a prince AND a princess? (The show's big question!)
@irisofrosebloom87416 жыл бұрын
Nobody is a literal "prince" or "princess" in this show, they're just cultural shorthands for the general ideas of traditional romanticized ideas of masculinity and femininity, which are both harshly criticized in their own right by the show itself, and utterly abused by Akio in the later episodes for his own personal gain. Utena tries to be a prince for most of the show, stumbles a bit and almost becomes a princess near the end, and in the final episode ultimately disappears because she was trying to hold onto the childish idea of a "prince" in a world that's fundamentally incompatible with that concept once you're exposed to the adult world.
tbh idk if anyone ever see this comment but. i have a question to ask : 1. is this series really a gl series? cause i know im being impatient but i've watched the series till ep 11 and ngl, there's no flavour in Anthy and Utena's relationship and im almost droped it.
@amazinglyaverage412 Жыл бұрын
Yea but it happens later
@everydaytoday1502 Жыл бұрын
Super late reply but if you’re looking for a straight up love story with cute romantic moments then this is going to be a disappointment upon your first watch lol. It’s a deeply psychological show where the characters’ motivations aren’t revealed until late in the game. And, if you don’t mind light spoilers, Anthy and Utena’s relationship isn’t shown to be explicitly romantic until the movie. If that turns you off from the series I don’t blame you, but it really is interesting and I hope that you continued to watch it!
