On March 16, 2005 National Guard Public Affairs Office announced that all, or a portion of Walz’s battalion could be mobilized to serve in Iraq within the next two years. Walz’s retirement was official on May 16, 2005. The battalion received alert orders for mobilization on July 14, 2005. The official Department of the Army mobilization order was received on Aug. 14, 2005, and the unit mobilized on Oct. 12, 2005. The actual Iraq deployment was in March of 2006.

You are not "promoted" to a higher rank until all requirements are met. Walz's second in command at the NG unit states clearly that they all knew about the upcoming deployment as early as October 2004. Stop all this nonsense about Walz not knowing, he did know. The entire unit knew. Walz simply made other plans to avoid going with them.

There’s literally photos of Vance in full battle rattle (with his rifle) in the Middle East, what’s more Vance isn’t trying to use a phony rank and service to take away your rights and property. Most of the military isn’t the tip of the spear maybe 15% of military members actually get to release rounds during a conflict; but every soldier in country is in range of enemy fire so we tend to respect that more than a Sergeant Major masquerading as a Command Sergeant Major. Wales even had a challenge coming minted with the CSM rank knowing he’d never even completed the classroom portion of the rank.
