In a way, that's kind of fitting description - most of the members of the group met on on-line forums or were introduced by friends of friends - they came from US, UK and Australia, but four of them met when they were living in London - they formed a group - and when this group was performing in Japan they met another member who was Japanese but was a high school student in Maine. The South Korean member actually lives in Australia - and they create songs by sending files to each other, and commenting/adding/changing - till they come up with the finished song.

I love how everyone else is really jammin out, singing, and dancing while Orono is deadpan. It really ties it all together. The contrast between her vocals and the rest of the music is so perfect. I normally wouldn’t like something like this. It’s very heavy in electronic sounds and kinda dancey like I could hear it in a club but I love it. The colorful bouncy music anchored by Orono’s almost apathetic vocals is brilliant. Let’s see how many more times can I say the same thing?

This principle of musical tension between the lead singer's style and the band's is also what makes Steely Dan so interesting... Donald Fagen's weird thin warble contrasts perfectly with the sterile, smooth jazz-rock. Orono's distance is perfectly at odds with the hyper-energetic backing...and it adds up to incredibly listenable music

I've been to countless gigs and festivals. Seen Led Zep live when I was 15 (now 57) and I can totally get the brilliance here. The best thing I've heard for several years. I love nearly everything I hear on NPR but some stand out from the rest. This set, and sets by; Tank and the Bangas, Andrew Bird, Dakha Brakha, Mac Miller, Anderson Paak, they are so out-there inventive, that they deserve respect for even trying to break the moulds created by those who would pigeon-hole everything if they could.

Bands that do highly produced stuff in studio that can't even come close to matching it live have always been a pet peeve of mine, no matter the genre, and I don't find back-tracking to be a reasonable solution. The fact that they can reproduce this stuff live is majorly impressive, even if it is really quite out there.
@meteorjuice40886 жыл бұрын
I went down a rabbit hole of watching all of their live videos, and it absolutely blows my mind how amazing they sound in EVERY PERFORMANCE, even the ones with lesser quality audio recording. Their backup singers always hit the harmonies just right and the band always nails the beat. Orono is a bit of a wildcard sometimes, but I think that's the whole point of her contribution stylistically, which is perfect for their unique sound

We cannot strongly state one fact without seeming to belie some other. I hold our actual knowledge very cheap. Hear the rats in the wall, see the lizard on the fence, the fungus under foot, the lichen on the log. What do I know sympathetically, morally, of either of these worlds of life? These creatures have kept their counsel beside him, and there is no record of any word or sign that has passed from one to the other.

@dantebenuto6 жыл бұрын
agreed, I love the live sound of the band, "organic" is most definitely an excellent description of why the live performances best the studio recording. The same thing happens with another Tiny Desk band, Mother Falcon - their recordings come across as weak, but the Tiny Desk and other live performances are captivating.

A band who were touring and played a gig in Japan. The young girl up front went to see them, proposed this band when she talked with them after the gig. This is the result of that meeting. It's totally original, hyper musical, and is everything music should be, but isn't, due to the commerciallism of the main record llabels. Save your hatred for those who harm inventiveness, not the inventors. Hating is for total losers, the kind of people who can sap the joy from a room of people having a laugh...
