I wish they went more into the meaning behind each song in this performance because they're so meaningful and great. "Deathless" was inspired by Lisa-Kainde's negative interaction with a police officer racially profiling her at a train station when she was a teenager. "Vale" is also a special song to them because their singing not just of their love for their niece who they are far from but of their sister's love for her. Their sister/niece's mother passed away when their niece was young and they want to remind her in times of loneliness that her love transcends time and distance.

Saw Ibeyi play the first show on their tour for the new album. The scheduled outdoor show was rained out and last minute moved indoors to the cavernous Filmore Miami Beach Theater. Water dripped from the ceiling of the aged venue and some of crowd had clearly stayed home due to the weather (hurricane season!). Those who did attend received a real treat. The boom from the cajone and the harmony of the duel vocals echoed around the walls of the giant theater with a haunting charm. They had no trouble filling in the sonic space. The sisters were candid, charming and emotional when talking about the song for their niece (who I believe was in-house for some of the show). Hope you all have the chance to see them live!

I really need to be at a place where the likes of Ibeyi, Christian Scott, Noname, Tank and the Bangas, Tash Sultana, Red Baraat, Lianne LaHavas, Leon Bridges, Anderson. Paak, Fantastic Negrito, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, and countless other phenomenal artists just stop by to grace the desk with their talents. No job?
