To be a pedant it wasn't a Pinkerton B-side, The demo, recorded in 1994, was first released online in 2002 by the band, officially in 2007 on Alone and then the Coda Version from the Pinkerton sessions on Deluxe. It was written an individual track that became part of the Songs From The Black Hole tracklist and then the intended closing track for Pinkerton. But SFTBH got scrapped and they went with Butterfly.

One of the lyrics of the song is "I wonder how you touch yourself." Think about the very likely possibility that the girl herself has heard this song. "While beloved by many Gen-Xers who'd first heard it on 1996's Pinkerton, the song's lyrics haven't aged terribly well." Just like they stated, the Gen-Xers are going wild because of a harmless mention about how the lyrics aren't as acceptable nowadays. The song is great but it's literally about a barely legal teenage girl across the world who wrote him fan mail. That parts fine, the part that ISNT fine is the part where he states that he sniffs and licks the envelopes, trying to imagine what she is wearing and imagining her masturbating. Again, about a barely legal teenage girl. Explain how a small comment on how that's not really okay anymore is the same as shaming them and is unnecessary criticism.
@liquidsworrds38185 жыл бұрын
Liam my point is that they have weezer as a guest. It’s amazing that they played the song for npr at all so they should just be thankful. Weezer doesn’t play these songs as much today because of criticism of the lyrics, so if we want them to keep these songs in their live performances we shouldn’t remind them of how uncomfortable the lyrics are every time they play it. Clearly Rivers was brutally authentic when he wrote these songs, that is a part of what makes their early material so good.

Hey Robin, The lyrics to "Across The Sea" were just as awkward when it came out. Part of what made that album so challenging and part of why that album is revered. Honest to a fault. Superlame of you to undermine this band that you are showcasing. If you don't support them then don't support them.

The lyrics to the whole Pinkerton album are ever present and maybe even more relevent today in an age of "political correctness". The album speaks on the mind of a young adult dude in a way everyone's too afraid to speak of. Dudes have emotions too. Deep ones. Everyone has a darker side to them. The lyrics to Across the Sea aged beautifully. That is all.

@computeredfemale2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. pinkerton is so good because even if the situations described are really specific (like the letter from a japanese fan thing) the themes themselves are so universal we can all relate to it at least to some level. i was obsessed with the album as a teenage girl because it showed perfectly how it is to feel lonely heartbroken and a little bit angry. They are emotions that make us feel deplorable and immature but they are nonetheless there whether we pretend otherwise; hearing them in music be described in such an honest way is intially baffling but really admirable. Plus its just good music. People need to chill. I dont think anybody is supposed to feel comfortable or condone the darker things said in the album. Its literally pointed out in the song that the singer knows she could never touch the girl because it wouldnt be right, lol. Its art; it shouldnt always be pleasant.
