I was 10 years old watching that game. We were really under the pump in the first half against a great Canberra side. Penrith was the Minor Premiers though and we had a week off and narrowly beat Norths in the semis and then another week off so we were fresh, while Canberra had done it the hard way, winning 3 sudden death duels from 4th place. From memory the Raiders had Daley and Stuart carrying injuries. It was still very tough to beat them but we just persisted with so much ball and forcing drop outs in the second half. Eventually they ran out of juice under so much pressure and those magic tries to Izzard and Roycey happened and Brandy’s FG and sideline conversion. Roycey or Brandy deserved the CC medal in my opinion but Clyde won it. The problem was I think they decided the award before the match had even finished.. can’t explain that.

Yes Daley and Stuart both had injuries that restricted their kicking. So Canberra in the second half were always defending in their own half. They didnt show the Lazarus burst in the first half. Where he had only the fullback to beat and Clyde on the inside. He didnt pass and a certain try was lost. It would have made the score 18-6 with the conversion. And Penrith would have been sunk.

@@notsofatmike1 You're correct. Just fact checked it myself. I just believed the Comment. Why put out misinformation like this? Weird. Thanks for the truth. Further checking showed it was the day after Penrith was given their Premiership Winning Club Jerseys for 1991. Ben was 3 times over the limit. Shattered the family.
@pantherz91033 жыл бұрын
Ben died in a car accident the night after we beat Easts 23-10 at Penrith in Round 12 of 1992. I remember being a little kid and my mum telling me he had died. It was tragic for the whole club. I thought about it a lot it was hard to accept and the club didn’t really get over it for years, it’s what made Greg leave the club to go to Warriors for a couple of years. Essentially a lot of players left the club in the coming years and we became a mediocre team that couldn’t even make finals for a long time. I really doubt we would have dropped off so much if Ben hadn’t died.. but that’s history I guess.

I still think the second try Wood scored in the 1991 grand final is one of the best I've seen from a pure football point of view considering the play before and how quickly they adjusted to the next play. Play before the try Walters, Stuart, Daley, Meninga, Belcher and finally to Martin. The play was for Meninga to hit Belcher into a hole. The Penrith defence converged across. Next play Belcher DH, Stuart, Daley, Meninga, Clyde into the hole and Wood scores. Stuart, Daley and Meninga all remained in that order playing both sides of the field. Just the best.

Daley and Stuart on 1 leg. Clyde goes outside to Wood instead of inside to Mark Bell, he scores under the posts, Lazarus went the wrong way coming back in to the traffic, if he goes wide they score.
