This song was Elvis Presley's. Elvis Presley and Johnny Rivers were friends. Johnny Rivers stole the song from Elvis. Elvis Presley brought Johnny Rivers to his home. And could not wait but play Memphis Tennessee. For his friend Johnny Rivers. Call Johnny Rivers could do is rant and rave how great it. Elvis was kicking ass with this on. Elvis told Donnie everything's all worked out I'm getting ready to record the song. 1964 it would have been a number one hit for Elvis. And he would have made 50% on the royalties of the. That's how Colonel Parker had everything set up when I was dead recordings. But anyways the next thing you know I was heard the song on the radio Johnny River singing Memphis Tennessee. No it was disappointed because he stole the song. Alice did not make any fuss over it. Ella said if he needs the song that bad let him have. Thing was Elvis could have use that song in 1964 he continues to hit. Because ours was doing nothing but movies. Elvis lived in Memphis Tennessee so that's why it would have been a great trademark for Elvis. Chuck Berry and I wish her friends. And it was all arranged for Elvis to do the song. I do not know how Johnny Rivers got away by doing that. If all the publishers and everybody knew that I was going to cut it. I heard the story today, because of Memphis Mafia wrote it in their book. Johnny Rivers try to deny it say that's not how it went down. But all the guys around Elvis said bullshit. I guess those big thing I guess it was a big thing. I was never told nobody I was never told the press or nothing. I'm going to check more into it. But go listen to Elvis Presley's version of Memphis Tennessee. The way Johnny Rivers is doing his exact way Elvis was recording it so Donnie river is copied everything from Elvis arrangement.

@Joan In Florida _not sure if you watched Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand' over the years, but most music artists did not play live. (Johnny Rivers was barely 22 here, so when you looked like this, all you had to do was show up). One of the greatest musicians from the 1960s for sure._

@Joan In Florida _that's one thing about the internet, and this amazing platform; once you put something in writing it's there for an eternity. (Side note: trying to be 'glib' about a Johnny River's performance on Dick Clark's show isn't sarcastic, it's just not cool). Yeah, he sounded like his record, yes his guitar wasn't plugged in. It's 1964(and Dick Clark's guests rarely, if ever performed 'live'). He was barely 22 here, and not sure about you, but he was incredibly easy on the eyes._

@@Gilbert_Dice_Gottfried Johnny does a great job with a great Chuck song, however, he was a "friend" of Elvis and while visiting Elvis at home, Elvis, excited, but somewhat naively played Johnny the acetate of what was going to be his next single....next thing, a version by Johnny was rushed out ahead of Elvis....Johnny says he had recorded it for release on an album and it was his manager and record company's decision to release it as a single when they did. According to Elvis's friends, EP was pi$$ed, and JR was banned from his home, but he calmed down and said "if he needs the hit that much let him have it" EP's guitar player JB said Elvis still respected JR and they spoke again later in the 70s. Elvis only released alternative versions on albums. However, he can be heard singing it live with what might have been his original arrangement(similar to what JR released)

Years later Carlos again ACDC Blue Oysters Bruce Springsteen, Dr John, different version of Jefferson Airplane had tickets to Stones twice ( had 12 tickets for Capital Center show...always sold my Stones to kets to rich college girls) Though Hendrix and Carlos were my favs, Springsteen put on Best show. Very best all around Gato Barbieri ( RIP) Though he could not speak English, my Latin wife and him talked for half hour. I would have let Gato fuck her...but I doubt he had the energy after his first show at Blues Alley.

About '75, me & my buddy snuck thru a back door, at the theater, in Knotts Berry Farm. Introduced ourselves to him & he shook our hands & gave us a moment. Pretty cool for a couple of teenagers

Wow, you had a Goat! I'm a little jealous. I had a '68 Ambassador. It did have a Craig floor-mount 8-track. And it was great at the Drive-in.

Just to think that this man with his style of music was performing at the same venue as the Doors were at the same time in history is rather mind boggling.

My Dad and Mom had Johnny Rivers’ album 💿 Live at The Whiskey-A-Go Go. I remember playing that album so much that I almost wore it out. My sister and I would dance to about every song on it. Lol. Sometimes Mom would join in dancing with us. We lost Dad in March of 2014 then Mom followed him in November of 2014. That was the worst year of our lives! How I miss them still. I would give about anything to be able to have those days of my youth back again!

How can there be a Rock Hall of Fame without this man
@vincebalosky7715 жыл бұрын
Johnny Rivers should have been inducted at least 25 years ago it should be called The Rock and Roll Hall of Shame there's so many great singers of the past that should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame you can't take that as a measure of greatness

Johnny Rivers was a Christian and did some Christian songs, like ‘Jesus is a soul man’. There’s your reason why. Bias against Christians
@christopherarnett28512 жыл бұрын
The pathetic so called Hall of Fame is a disgrace. Half the icons are left out like Tommy Bolin a Guitarist who should have been in the hall of Fame years ago, and he was shoved under the rug, and the list goes on and on.

A friend and I saw Johnny Rivers in concert at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, back in 1972 or 1973. There were 2 microphone stands with 2 mics on each one, one low and one high, one stand was was back behind the other. Johnny and a young man came out, I never knew who he was. They gave the most wonderful, outstanding concert I have ever been to. It is one of my favorite memories.
