Elvis actually recorded this song first. Johnny Rivers was a guest at Elvis' home and Elvis played his recording of "Memphis" for Johnny Rivers who had never heard it before. He asked Elvis to hear his recording again. Elvis, being proud of his recording of the song, of course played it for Rivers again. It was not long after when Elvis heard Johnny Rivers' recording of this same song on the radio. Elvis felt Johnny betrayed him on this song. Elvis never wanted Johnnny Rivers around him again!
