Oh, that is indeed drool worthy! I just wish it was in the ESV-CE or RSV-2CE.

Agreed. The NRSV is a leftist politically correct translation using gender neutral terminology. ESV CE is an excellent modern translation. The RSV CE came out earlier and is a fine translation also. I personally wouldn't bother with the NRSV

Wow! That is a beautiful Bible. Thank you for reviewing it. It is far out of my price range, but I enjoyed looking at it. I wish they would have put antique-looking maps in the back. I think that would have matched the style a lot better. The modern maps seem out of place.

What is it with leather over hardcover??? Are Catholic Bible publishers afraid of leather editions? Also, as is the presenter, no cup of tea for me is the NRSV-CE. Perhaps copyright hinders the publisher from other versions. It seems this edition has lots of space on page edges. Could have expanded the text (font size looks tiny for such a large edition), brought it closer to the end of the pages.

It’s a 9.5 font. I actually like the wide margins. The way I view it, this is a step toward premium. It’s getting closer.

By the way, I do think Copyrighting is a factor. They have rights to the NRSV and NABRE. Neither are my preference. I’ve asked them about the Duoay-Rheims as I am pretty sure that is public domain but I haven’t heard back.

@@anickelsworthbiblereviews A few companies: Ignatius Press and Baronius Press have leather over hardcover. IP has stated emphatically that’s as close to “premium” they’ll get. If there’s no consumer audience (in measurable numbers), there won’t be any actual premium Catholic Bibles produced.
@anickelsworthbiblereviews
@anickelsworthbiblereviews 3 жыл бұрын
Catholic Bible Press has the covering of Harper Collins which also produces Thomas Nelson and Zondervan. I believe they represent your best chance at a premium Catholic Bible simply because they have a wider audience, and can absorb the cost much better.

I think, now that I actually have this Bible in my hands (the leather soft version) that while I think they could have gone to a 10.5 font, even at 9.5 the Bible is over 2,000 pages. If they had enlarge the font it would have gotten even bigger. So perhaps that was a consideration.

I put the softcover on pre-order, but I'm still eagerly waiting for it. 🙂 I considered getting the premium leather one, but I just can't bring myself to purchase real leather products anymore given the realities of modern industrial agriculture. I really wouldn't mind paying for quality, though.

Nice overview. One question: why would the first illustration in Genesis be controversial?
@anickelsworthbiblereviews
@anickelsworthbiblereviews 3 жыл бұрын
Because it is supposed to be an image of God, thus breaking the second commandment in their minds. I don’t love it myself, but I’m also not hung up on it.

@@anickelsworthbiblereviews I see. In my tradition we do not picture God The Father, but we have stained-glass windows with images of Jesus. So I guess we don't have that exact concern, though I'm not too keen on people painting God. Are there any specific denominations, do you think, which hold strongly to the more iconoclastic tendency(and therefore would be more inclined to react negatively to the image in Genesis)? Thank you.

Agreed, I can forgive the NRSV for translation choices like adding "brothers and sisters," but it's really hard to forgive translating Daniel 7:13 ("I saw ... one like a son of man") as "I saw one like a human being," a translation choice that destroys the connection between Daniel's vision and Jesus' use of the "son of man" title. Still a beautiful bible though.

@@gilbertculloden87 Indeed... Another good example ( among many ) is a definitive quote from Jesus in Mathew 4:4 NRSV translation " ONE does not live by bread alone", RSV translation " MAN does not live by bread alone" . This is a classic example of the never ending retreat of Christianity against a toxic leftist PC ideology. Just sickening. .... So no... Im not buying this translation. I dont care how deceptively attractive it is.
