REVIEW: NRSV-CE Illustrated Catholic Bible from Catholic Bible Press

I got my copy of this Bible recently and I just love it! It's so pretty and classy. It feels good to hold, the print is easy to read and 'elegant' in style. I love the patterned guilding. This is the nicest looking Catholic Bible I have ever come across. Many I have had in the past have been plain and 'functional' but not much to look at. I also love that it's the NRSV and not the NAB which I have never really liked.

Its kind of ironic that its the Protestants who buy the fancy bibles…im trying to find a nice NRSV/NRSVue w/ apocrypha for reading & the nicest-looking options tend to be the Catholic bibles - imo even nicer looking exterior-wise than the Cambridge or Zondervan. Really love the illustrations & readability of this one but it might be too hefty for what I’m looking for.

I got this for my mom for Christmas this year and also got one for me. If you get it from The Catholic Company, you can get your name stamped in gold on the cover for a bit extra. It’s a really wonderful Bible!

I bought this about a year ago, I love everything about it other that it being an NRSV instead of RSV. For this reason, I hardly ever use it despite the fact that it feels great in the hands, lays great on a desk, looks great in every way, lovely font, perfect layout etc. If it were RSVCE, I'd use it evey day.

You’re missing out then. NRSV improved greatly on the deuteroocanonical books which I’d think would be quite important to Catholics. Also makes the poetry read better by removing the ‘Thee’s and ‘Thy’s. I just got this bible today & I’m super impressed with the quality. There’s nothing wrong with preferring RSV but you’re just doing yourself a disservice if you refuse to read NRSV on silly ideological grounds.

@@Jd-808 I appreciate your comment and suggestion. I would object however to characterizing my distaste for it as "silly ideological grounds". Read the prologue to John gospel. "And the life was the light of *all people* ..." ....I mean, c'mon. You really think that sounds nice? I don't think the nrsv is horrible. I do find its use of dead sea scroll and the Septuagint good. But it just reads oddly in some instances.

@@Proclivitytolife I agree it can read oddly, which is unfortunate, but that’s true of every translation in one place or another. The NRSV translation in the verse you quote is truer to John’s intent, and I don’t even think it’s especially clunky, but I understand your point. The problem I have is that people don’t take about how it ‘sounds’, they talk about it as if it’s the product of ‘gender ideology’ - true, but only in the sense that humanity isn’t defined by men nowadays - that’s a good thing, right? That said, I do agree that some things are softened or changed on ideological grounds, but again, name a translation where that isn’t the case. It’s an excellent translation, any biblical scholar will tell you it does a better job in service to the earliest texts than any other (though now, I assume, that’d be the NRSVue). So a friendly suggestion that you don’t let that bible go to waste!

It looks amazing! Space, good clear font, decent paper. I always knew my ideal Bible would be something like this - with illustrations. And the NRSV is one of my fav translations. Thank you for the review, it's very helpful. The only downer for me, as I mentioned on another channel, is the cover. I'm not so keen on the heavy gold use. I guess because I'm a Brit and I grew up being taught 'less is more'...! The heavy gold looks a bit tacky to me, a bit 'Las Vegas'-y...but I appreciate a lot of people will like it, so I hope that doesn't sound too harsh! Might get it rebound or beg them for a goatskin edition!

I told myself that I wouldn't get another Bible with a paper liner and leathersoft, But this is one of those situations where I think that if I hesitate, I'll regret it. This is too nice to pass up, and the more premium version with the hardcover leather is a bit more than I want to deal with. I really like the illustrations, the font, the fact that it's NRSV... This might be one of those situations where I can always rebind it later if the liner comes apart.

That is a very attractive Bible for sure. The Didache Bible was a bit more within my price range which I just received. Not quite a good quality physically as this one but it has double column text per page with cross-references at the bottom. Functionality is most important to me. I also prefer the RSV over the NRSV.

Hello. I was hoping you could explain something to me about this amazing Bible. Why do all the words that have “ct”, “st”, etc in it have a odd hook from the top of the t back to the previous letter? I don’t know how else to explain it.

Wonderful review! This looks like it might be a nice journaling bible or at least allow for some good note taking depending on the page thickness. Is this a regular NRSV-CE? I ask because I have seen some NRSV2CE bibles where it sounds like it is an newer, updated NRSV. Thank you!

There are a few different translations that have official approval from the Catholic Church.

Well, IDK about the official Bible translation for RCC, but us Caths LOVE the Douay Rheims translation, many scholars claim it to be the best Bible translation ever. For us Catholics it is as it's a formal translation like the KJV, but including all the Books they removed
