Wow! Just shown my wife how the wagons judder over dodgy old track. Just how I remember trains and track in Asheville and Blue Ridge Mountains when I did an international student summer job there in 1973. Right now we have steady rain in Londonon a beautiful Autumn (Fall) afternoon

This makes me want to restart a model railroad. I grew up with one. It took up half the basement. It messed 3 meters by 10 meters. I built that for many years. Then one unfortunate tornadic night, the sump pump failed and I awoke to find the basement flooded almost to the entry door from the main floor of the house. When the water was pumped out, the devastation was terminal. I sold the entire layout for $45 for someone that wanted to try to salvage a few things. He managed to save a few locomotives, some hopper cars, but that was about it. I will never forget that old railroad layout I had so many years. I only recently parted with one of the locomotives I kept as a wrecked keepsake. It was the last one I had bought, a Nickel and Plate 2-6-0 steam locomotive. My cat knocked it off the shelf I kept it. When it hit the ground it almost became unrecognisable. I decided it was time to make the final break. I wish I had the space for a model railroad again. Maybe an N scale or Z scale may work but it would be very small.

One of the most realistic videos that I've seen in awhile, we'll done. The jerkey backing may be caused by the grass tufts between the rails, just a thought. We'll done scenery as well !!! Thanks for sharing, bill
@nsmodeler248 жыл бұрын
Thanks will! That is partly caused by grass tuffs and also because there is a steep down grade into the cement plant, while the mainline is an up grade.

So cool, the gentle way that SD40-2 pulled away and uncoupled from that hopper in the first scene. Just a little item, but realistic and worth noting, nonetheless. Neglected track is always a super-interesting little detail on a layout; rust and weeds and junk around the bent up track.

Great sound. Some of the best I've herd. Nice camera angle at :43.The coupling at 4:27 was perfect.Track at 5:45 is a real "oucher" and I thought I had some bad track!!! I noticed that on one shot you have a car and there is no uncoupling pin on the coupeler. Is that a problem. I was thinking that with manual uncoupling there is no need for them. What do you think?? There it is again at &:28... As a professional photographer I am in awe of the person that did the photography. He/she has a real good eye and the rest of the layout is really great...

My understanding is that the J-shaped wires below the Kadee-style couplers are only needed if you're uncoupling with magnets.

Hey Josh (and Josh's dad) great video, I can't get over how much work you guys have put into the layout but what I can't get even more over is how good your engines sound! that was a really good looking beat up track. How do you make your couplers uncouple with out touching them? That was a great little operation.

When couplers uncouple all on their own and you don't see a big ugly magnet between the rails, that's video editing. :)

how do you model bad track? I want to build a railway in ho scale of the last Canadian Pacific spur line in Canada and most of the track is rough. anyway love the layout , big inspiration to my layout plans!
@tbfilms34278 жыл бұрын
To model old jointed rail track, hammer a small dent in the track every 40 scale feet or so (about every 6 inches is close enough). You can also not make it perfectly straight when laying it, in the end the results will be great.

@davidcurtis53986 жыл бұрын
Nice layout and great "bad track". I to have removed all of the "uncoupling arms" off of my rolling stock because I use an uncoupling tool and not magnets. I just think that the part of the rod you have left on under the coupler needs to be removed all of the way up to the coupler. To me the short part of the coupler looks as bad as the entire thing. Otherwise nice video, great detail on the layout, and great operation.

@brockjames89203 жыл бұрын
How'd you make it bad track? Hammer or pliers?
@davidcurtis53984 жыл бұрын
Beautiful layout but I would want the magnetic pins to be cut off much closer to the coupler. I have mine cut off and I did it so you can not see that they were ever there.

your engines jerk alot, is that because of the decoder or motor?
@laurenceweiler8 жыл бұрын
I think it's more the rolling stock when reversing than the motor/decoder. Even NMRA weighted cars will jerk with the coupler slack when backing up. More weight helps with that if you aren't pulling long trains. I hear Sergeant couplers are better with that too, but I understand they don't play well with others. I have no experience with them.
