NSD REACT | A GUIDE TO EXO'S LAY

Lay is one of the most famous celebrities in China right now, so everyone wants to work with him. He owns his own record label/studio in China and he produces his own music, as well as music for other artists. Plus, he is, or was, a youth ambassador to China appointed by the government, which means he has a lot of obligations in China. He is considered China's national producer. He is also an actor and he is a spokesperson for a lot of Chinese products and causes -- he is the EXO member with the most endorsement deals. He is also a host of reality programs and is appearing on numerous variety shows in China, so this all keeps him very busy. He is one of the most sought after celebrities in China so he spends a lot of time living in China and away from the other EXO members. Because of his super busy schedule and because of some issues between the Chinese and Korean government, Lay has not been a part of EXO activities for more than 3 years now, other than his cameo appearance in the "Tempo" MV and his brief vocal part in the Mandarin version of "Tempo" MV and song. His hiatus from EXO is not something he has chosen, but its something that has sort of been forced upon him by the government. So he has recently been working hard to find ways around those restrictions, which explains one reason why he has been releasing so many English songs lately. By producing songs in English for the U.S. market it allows him and SM to do collaboration projects which give him a chance to keep his connection to EXO, without actually breaking any rules, and it allows SM to connect the stories in his MVs to EXO's storyline. Now, I am no where near an expert on the topic, and I admit that I only understand a very minor part of what is going on between the Chinese and Korean government, but as I understand it, part of the reason for the ban on Chinese and Korean workers between the two countries is that China is refusing to align itself with the U.S. or South Korea to protect themselves with deployment of the THAAD missile defense system in South Korea. North Korea and China want to get rid of the rocket system that is meant to shoot down a nuclear missile if North Korea were to launch one at South Korea or the U.S. Another reason why China doesn't like the THAAD system is because China and the U.S. don't have the best relationship, so if the U.S. and China become on even worse terms China is afraid the U.S. could also use THAAD against them. China says the THAAD system is just provoking them to actually start a nuclear war, and until they remove it or at least move it back from the South Korean boarder, they will continue their ban on Korean products, workers and the Hallyu wave from working in China and for its native Chinese citizens from working with Korean companies. China feels like the Korean government is taking away its native commodities by allowing Chinese people to work in Korea. The issue is even more complicated than this, but that is one part of it. And now, with the recent conflict with the Chinese government and Hong Kong, more political tension has continued to make it difficult for our Chinese Idols to work with their Korean companies and groups. With many Chinese Idols recently coming out in support of the Chinese government and publicly supporting "One China," this has made it once again even less likely that Lay will be able to work with EXO in the near future. With Lay's deep ties to the Chinese government and with the fact that he is one of the most popular celebrities in China right now, he can't afford to be blacklisted by the Chinese government. He needs to be able to work and live in China as freely as possible. So, regardless of how he might feel politically on a personal level, he has to come out in support of the Chinese government publicly, which puts him at odds with many other counties views on the subject. With pressure from the Chinese government, it may have been difficult for him to stay neutral, or at least not make his opinion public, so unfortunately he is now receiving some backlash from people outside of mainland China. But no matter what, Lay always makes sure to find a way to show fans that he is, and will always be, a member of EXO -- he is always supporting his EXO brothers even from afar. Most recently we were able to see Lay back together with the rest of EXO when Lay came to Korea to be there for the day that D.O. enlisted in the military. And in most of Lay's solo work we have nods to EXO and how the stories in his solo MVs are connected to EXO's storyline. He always works hard to remind everyone how important EXO and EXO-Ls are to him. He is one of the top dancers in the industry and its his solo work where he really gets to showcase what an amazing dancer he really is. He is the main dancer of EXO-M and he is the counterpart to Kai's role in EXO-K Kai and Lay are both main dancers, lead vocalists and sub-rappers in their EXO units so its no surprise that Lay is an amazing dancer. 🤩 That is why most of the time when you see solo dance breaks in EXO concerts you will see Lay and Kai dancing together because they are 2 of the top dancers in the industry and they were meant to fill similar roles in their respective sub-units in EXO. Lay is known as one of the hardest working artist in the industry because he is such a perfectionist and he pretty much does it all himself.When it comes to his solo work If you look at the credits for his albums, Lay actually wrote and composed and produced the whole album himself, including the English lyrics. Yes I am sure he had consultants who helped him find the right words, but if you know him, you know that there is almost nothing that he is involved in that he doesn't have 100% control of himself. When it comes to Lay's solo work he does it all himself -- he writes, composes and produces the songs (including the rap sections), he has a large part in choreographing the dances and he has a hand in coming up with and directing the MVs. There really is almost nothing he can't do. That's including learning English so he could make a crossover into the U.S. music market. Lay was the first EXO member to have a solo career and last year, he became the first EXO member to make his U.S. debut and he produced his first all English album. "Namanana" was a half English/half Mandarin album and it was his American debut release as part of his U.S. tour and promotions. Every Mandarin song on his "Namanana" album has an all English version. He followed that album up with "Honey" which also has an all English version. Because Lay is not allowed to promote in Korea right now, SM has found a way to promote Lay as part of EXO's storyline by partnering with him to release English songs and to tie his MVs in with EXO's story. Everything EXO does, including several of Lay's solo releases ties into the fact that he is a member of EXO -- its SM's way of making sure that even though he might not be able to work with the members right now, that they still make sure to show fans that his storyline and presence as part of EXO is still really important to both Lay and SM. I think people misunderstand Lay (Zhang Yixing) sometimes when they first see him because he often comes off as kind of aloof and standoffish and super serious, but what more people need to understand is that, if you get to know him, you will soon find it's because he is very dedicated and committed to what he does and he always wants to show his best self at all times. In reality he is kind of shy and doesn't like to have a lot of attention on himself. When you hear Lay's song "Sheep" you will discover that he is our "China Sheep -- the lead sheep in China." So he has two sides to him and that's what makes him a sheep -- soft, kind and cute, and powerful and dedicated. He is an all around personality that really is the whole package. 🤩 And he is one of the kindest, nicest, sweetest, hardest working people you will ever meet, and all he wants to do is take care of people. 😍 And this is also why Lay's EXO superpower, being the ability to heal everything, is perfect because it fits his personality well.

Lay and EXO members visit each other when they can...usually during their promotions! Lay is one of my favorite people in K-pop. He is just so very kind and he is so passionate about his music. He really deserves the world.

actually when bts first debuted taehyuung was known for looking like baekhyun and everyone said baekhyun was like his dad it was a joke in korea and baekhyun and taehyung actually became good friends because of it theyve posted a couple pictures together where they look a lot alike. i think the similarity mostly comes from them both having boxy smiles lol.

Can you imagine how horrible is the fact that he is not able to promote with his members because of the political issues?(even more horrible because we already lost other chinese members) It's just so sad, but we EXO-Ls trust him, and it's soooo beautiful to see how strong their relationship are, sometimes that makes me cry. He's a VERY kind person. Always care about his fans and his members the most. He always says that he's part of the EXO (even it's not safe for him to say that), because he knows very well how EXO-L felt sad and desperate when we lost the members, and many people said (and still say) that he will leave EXO too, but he always denies that. Weibo has trended tons if idols like exo black pink twice kang Daniel bts GOT7 etc in the past year. Koop idols lik heechul and Lim yoona were invited to an event not too long ago, too. Yep, sadly Lay won't return to Exo anytime soon, and politics is the reason. With him being a a Chinese national, and the current strained relations between S.Korea, China and the US, (you can blame THAAD, pretty much a missile defense /crisis) that Lay needs to lay low and not sympathize with S.Korea, and China loves Exo, but as of late they can visit each other, more on the secretive side, but not work together or bring attention to themselves, all eyes would be on them. The disease he has "haemophilia" is actually quite dangerous. It stops your blood from clotting, so you will not get a scab on a wound. In the past you would just bleed out whenever you got a small cut of even if you got hurt without a wound. Normally you would get a bruise (small internal bleeding) but if your blood doesnt clott you will keep bleeding on the inside. Nowadays they have medication that makes it manageable, but in the past not many people with haemophilia made it into their teens 🙁

Lay is very influential in China. Since Thaad, Chinese netizens are very harsh on anything related to Korea. From 2016 to 2017/2018 anything korean is banned in chinese television. For example when showing clips of EXO in china, they blur the korean members faces because of the ban. Scheduled concert dates in China was cancelled. Though it has been lifted already since 2018, netizens still don't take kindly to anything related to korea yet. Once Lay posted a selfie of him and Sehun in the practice room, he was bashed and forced to take it down. Lay is too big in China for SM to risk ruining his reputation.

Not trying to compare. BTS can be successful together, but all members of EXO are famous in individual and solo promotions. D.O himself has fans that love his acting but don't know he is an EXO member (Suho and Kai too) and Lay is a very successful soloist in China. Every EXO member already received solo awards that just increase their number of awards. Hemophilia is a blood clotting disease, not clothing. It is a medical condition that makes it hard for blood to clot so if someone with hemophilia gets injured they will bleed a lot more than normal.
