Jack Black said this in an interview: “That’s definitely the movie that I’m most proud of. That’s the one that I felt like all the planets aligned. . . What's great about Dewey not performing his own song for the contest is that it shows he learned something too. At the beginning of the film his bandmates fired him because he was too into the music and his own guitar-playing, to the point that he didn't listen to the rest of the band or be a cohesive part of it. By the end of the film, he enjoyed working WITH the kids and playing music with them and trying out Zack's song, even if it meant not doing his own stuff. That's pretty good growth on his part, while still keeping the essence of himself as a person (monster fan of rock music, lol).

A LOT of these kids were picked because of their interest in music, and werent actors prior to OR ever after this movie. Several of them went on to be in actual bands, and hone their skills with music. Freddie - the drummer continued to drum in his own band, until he unfortunately passed away in 2021 after being hit by a car, riding his bike in chicago. Zack - the electric guitar kid, continued to play guitar and has insane skills, he has a few EPs out and you should check out their 10 year reunion and watch him absolutely shred his guitar. Nuts. Lawrence, the piano kid, went on to attend DARTMOUTH where he continued to study and perform as a pianist! Tomika, the incredible singer, has continued to move forward in life as a singer and has released her music under the name Mayhrenate. Billy, the fashion kid, became a songwriter. All the other kids have also gone on to either act, or get degrees in varying medical fields. But its very VERY clear, that Jack Black and this film had a huge and beautiful impact on these kids. ❤

Funny thing about summer (Miranda Cosgrove) she purposely was singing bad because she sings great 😂 as for the keyboard kid, he actually almost didnt want to do the movie because he was exactly he is in the movie, nervous and low self esteem. Which made him perfect for the role, Jack Black made him a lot more confident by the end, his character arc was his actual life arc. 😊 Also RIP Freddie. My favorite line is when he says "Would you ask picasso to sell his guitars" and she calls him stupid. When in fact that was the best question ever, she only knows picasso for doing art, he knows more in the fact that he often paint pictures of guitars.

for a lot of the kids it was their first gig, and lawrence (robert tsai), the one in the keyboard, actually expressed to linklater that he thought he might not be the best fit for the role. so the "i'm not cool enough" scene was in a sense inspired by that interaction. also the bassist and guitarist, zack (joey gaydos jr.) and katie (rivkah reyes) are actually in a band together now!
@aa_02223 ай бұрын
forgot to mention, linklater wanted the film to feel as real as possible! (and the film came first, of course!!) -- plus jack black had to record a video with all the extras when they were at the battle of the band set, asking led zeppelin if they could use their song, and the band said yes! bc they actually denied when linklater asked them for dazed and confused

Yes, all the band kids actually played their instruments, and some even had to tone down their skill level becasue it was too unrealistic how good they were. You guys need to watch HIGH FIDELITY with both John and Joan Cusack and that was Jack Black's breaktrough role... It's FANTASTIC movie and very underrated. You guys would love it!

Btw, Jack Black and Jim Carey were in a movie together once, The Cable Guy. It's a dark comedy that's worth checking out. It was pretty early in Jack Black's career, so he has a small part as the straight man of all things.

As far as child actors, it's kind of half and half. Most of the kids in the band were hired because they could play, but a lot of the non-playing kids were in quite a few other things at the time.
