High-functioning depression is a common and challenging psychological condition that can cause big problems in a person’s life and can take away from a person’s quality of life. High-functioning depression differs from Major Depressive Disorder and that it is not as severe in terms of symptom intensity, but it tends to be more chronic and can still lead to major problems in a person’s life. In this video, I discuss some of the symptoms of high-functioning depression, how high-functioning depression differs from clinical depression, some of the ways in which high-functioning depression can cause problems and interfere in your life and practical tools that you can use to manage high-functioning depression.

Again - this Dr has more nuances and a much better way of describing things in the world of patients experience of mental illness. He goes beyond the diagnostic criterias and makes me feel seen. Any patient would be lucky to have such a professional in their life.

Doing my shadow work, owning my insecurities, codependency, fears etc....helped me relax and accept myself. Huge release of major depression....l went in and met my inner rage and conflicts. Yes meds anti d and vitamin D. But l feel ik in myself. Self nurturing of my dailys needs and being here in reality is my dearest structured friend.

I feel like she’s perfectly describing me, but I know self diagnosis is dangerous, but I’m broke as fuck working full time struggling to pay bills, I can’t afford a psychiatrist, how the fuck do I even start trying to solve this, knowing and noticing it doesn’t seem to mean or do anything. I mean I know I depressed. I think about death and what a blissful release from existence it will be, I’ve never had suicidal thoughts as I view that as the epitome of weakness, a pathetic attempt to end one’s own suffering instead of suffering through it and earning whatever afterlife might exist, so I’m not worried about that, but it doesn’t make existing any easier either. If anything o feel cheated, because it’s one more option denied me. Why must I put up with existence, suffering through meaningless unfulfilling work, barely scraping by, my memories fading each day slowly only being filled with monotonous mindless work and for what, so these jackasses can dip out at the first sign of trouble? Idk despite me desire for death suicide just pisses me off.

Can’t afford a psychiatrist? Talk to your Gp, they can and should prescribe you an antidepressant. There’s no shame in asking for help, if your Gp won’t prescribe, change doctors. Good Luck, you’re not alone

Saying that dysthymia is "not as severe" as MDD gives the impression: "So, it's not all that bad, why don't you just deal with it?" Besides not being as severe as MDD, but persisting longer, how do PDD and MDD differ? Is MDD 'worse' than PDD? How? I'd say that it is equally as debilitating, just in a different way. All of those 'boilerplate' suggestions: exercise, proper diet, meditation, mindfulness, and so on seem like panaceas, trying to make you think like you are doing something helpful, when they don't really address the underlying issues. Yes, difficult business. As for calling it PDD, or whatever, it is just a collection of random symptoms listed in the DSM with a name, much like other similar lists, and is not really a proper diagnosis. I'm not a big fan of how mental illness issues are currently being handled. Not to disparage a few, more identifiable, conditions, sometimes "I don't really know, but let's try this" is a lot better than a bunch of formal, made-up diagnoses and treatments. It seems to me that the mental illness field is about the same level of development as the medical field was a few hundred years ago, with bloodletting for everything, heated cups on the back, no idea of how infections were transmitted (no hand washing) or how they developed, and so on, treating conditions which were not understood at all.

amazing, the list of symptoms is so long and i think i've got 95% of them 😕 thanks Doc for the advices. What do you think about the assomptions of Dr Gabor Maté who says that those depressed states can come from being disconnected of our true self? are the both visions complementary? Thanks a lot, i saw a lot of your videos, i'm 45 now and figure out i am like that since a long time, maybe since i was a child, although it gets worst last years. it's time to do something to heal it. Greetings from Belgium

Thanks for watching and supporting the channel. I'm not sure about Dr. Mate's assumption of true self, because it's hard to determine what our true self is. Could be that when we don't live up to our perceptions of what we should be, that could drive depression. But that could also be due to perfectionism, which isn't ideal either.

I like your content but why do you spend 9 minutes talking about the symptoms of high functioning depression and only 3 minutes on solutions.. the synptoms are obvious but the solutions are not, i came for the latter. Almost got depressed just hearing about all the negative symptoms haha
@DrRamiNader
@DrRamiNader Жыл бұрын
Fair point. I find that we often want to just get to the fix without understanding the problem, so that's why I wanted to go into detail about it and how it affects people's lives. The reality is, a comprehensive video on solutions would be hours long. So I think of this more as a reference to direct to the more detailed videos on solutions. I hope that makes sense.

I personally really appeciated the symptom discussion, I used to beat myself up for experiencing these and thought there was just something wrong with me. Hearing that these are normal and its just depression makes it more bearable, and its kind of hard to treat the problem if you dont know you have one. Sure, a detailed video on strategies for recovery would be great, but for me hearing the symptoms has been equally helpful.
