NSW Trainlink XPT “First Class” Daysitter / Sleeper cabin - 4/10/2022

Just a quick walk around of a NSW Trainlink XPT First Class Day sitter / Sleeper Cabin.
These Day sitters seat 3 and sleep 2 on Bunks, With 2 cabins sharing a toilet / Shower.
This particular cabin was seats 29 30 and 31, On the 8.44am XPT out of Wauchope bound for Sydney on the 4/10/2022.
Overall the XPT’s not to bad considering it’s a 40 year old train, That’s done several million kilometres up and down the Australian East coast from Sydney as far north as Brisbane Queensland and as far south as Melbourne Victoria.

I’ve done the Daysitter and Sleeper trips from Sydney to Casino twice this year and quite enjoyed it. The only thing I didn’t like about the Daysitter is not being able to recline the seat. Hurts your back after a while.

I always try to get the day sitter / Sleeper in Car A, As it’s nice to just have your own little space. But I definitely agree with you about not being able to recline the seats, The Central to Wauchope run is just on 7 hours. The first hour Your fine the following 6 your fidgeting to try and get comfy, What I tend to do now is take one of those little travel memory foam pillows or if I’m feeling a bit Childish I take my Tiger “Pillow Pet” that Mum love her got Me back in 2019 when I fractured one of my lower vertebrae as she knows I love tigers. That way I can put it behind my back or sit on it for that extra bit of padding, I also cheat and put my small carry on suitcase on its side and use it as a make shift foot stool.

@@TheAussieBusman oh I agree about having your own little space. Loved it! Cos of covid I got the whole cabin to myself. Aww I love that you used your Tiger pillow pet. Anything for comfort, right? What I did do later in the journey was put the arm rests up and lay down as I had a pillow with me. Was comfy enough. Can also get quite boring with no wi-fi or mobile reception. None with Optus anyway. Telstra might have been better. Just have to make sure to download movies before you leave or take anything to keep you occupied. I’d like to do the trip again before they take it out of service. No sleeper car on the new train, apparently.

@@JudeAussie There’s no phone reception with Telstra either, Mine drops out around Maitland and only really comes back around Kendall. I take My iPad with a few movies and shows on it and a portable battery pack and a couple of those big bulldog type clips, Then hang My iPad in it’s Case on the handle and use the clips to keep it in place so it doesn’t drop and just watch away. I heard the new ones won’t have the sleeper / day sitter cabins as well which is a shame, Especially on the longer trips to say Brisbane and Melbourne. You don’t want to be sitting in a seat overnight for 15+ hours, If your anything like Me I can not sleep sitting upright. I’ve got to be laying down or at least spread out a bit and comfortable.

@@JudeAussie The replacement of the XPT is delayed for 3 years beyond 2023 btw according to The Sydney Morning Chronicle, great news for those of us who love the XPT (and Sleepers).

Is the sleeper cabin shared if you travel by yourself?

They sleep 2 and seat 3. It’s the luck of the draw sometimes you share with a stranger other times it’s to yourself as a sleeper. But you can pay the additional fare for both beds to guarantee to have it to yourself as a solo occupant, Which is what I like doing to have the top bunk set up as a bed and bottom as seating. As a day sitter over the past 15 years and 100 odd trips, I’ve only shared with a stranger for around an hour. The rest of the time I’ve had it to my self.
