I'm thinking about travelling from Canberra to Brisbane with my 8yrs granddaughter. I found your video full of information that will be helpful. Thank you for sharing 😊

I've done that trip many many times espcially from Melbourne as I use to live in Footscray. Twice I've done the Mel - Syd - Bne - Carins in 3 days in a seat. Back then it was the Cairns Tilt Train. I love travelling on the XPT and always travel 1st class on the overnight services.

I'm thinking of doing MEL - SYD - BNE for the holidays at the end of the year. Tell me, the SYD-BNE journey, is it better to travel overnight or during the day?

You had another lot of bedding above you, should have used some of it to make your bed more comfy! I love the sound of the creaks and noises that it makes! thats why im going on the train!

Not as good as the Brisbane Limited Express that I used to work back in the 1970's and 80's. In those days it went express from Broadmeadow to Grafton. It has gone backward stopping at every mainline station. We did have single roomettes on the train for people travelling alone. All in all you did a good job in filming the journey.

Great review, thanks. I believe the uncivilised arrival and departure times in Brisbane are because Queensland doesn't want our NSW train interfering with the local rush-hour commuter services. We use the XPT (non-sleeping) between Sydney and Wauchope, as we live in Port Macquarie. Flying down then railing back is a nice compromise - no hassles over baggage weight on the way home if you carry it yourself plus as pensioners we get very cheap travel on the railway - free in Economy or our preferred $17-odd for First Class. Not bad for a 7-hour-plus trip! And it includes a bus shuttle into Port if you catch the Grafton XPT.

Likley capacity in the Merivale Bridge as all the southern suburbern Lin's run through there with cross river rail opening in 2024 that will take pressure off the bridge and allow for the xpt to run to and from Brisbane twice a day
@realjohnboxall2 жыл бұрын
@@TOTN17 No, won't happen. QR need more paths over Merivale even after CRR. Frankly QR would be happy if the NSW passenger trains stopped at Acacia Ridge, out of sight out of mind out of network.

I see the food options haven’t improved over the years. Took the XPT in the 90’s . What a nightmare. Had to travel to Roma Street in Brizzy take a coach to Murwillumbah get on the train there. No sleepers on that train. No overnight food or coffee service even though we got on early evening around 6. People who didn’t get on at the start had to place their luggage on the racks and at every stop someone got off without their luggage at their stop because someone pinched it. Luckily my stuff was in the baggage carriage because I got on at the start of the trip and they refused to let anyone else put their luggage in the luggage carriage.They woke the whole carriage complaining - rightly so as their stuff was nicked. Woke up for breakfast only to find they still had no food other than chips and Soft drinks and instant tea and coffee . I swore never to take that trip again ever . It was freezing cold - no blankets no heating . It felt very 3rd world. It was grubby when I went on it also and it doesn’t look like they have cleaned it since the train started the first trip.

Cool video. Shame about the noisey suspension, it should have been sorted by some lubrication by now. Interesting that you included the COMENG footage which of course can be seen on KZbin in it's entirety for those interested. The carriages are actually based on an American design btw (Budd), only the power cars are based on the BR Class 43 (IC125) as far as I know. The steep gradients are the main reason for the design speed 160 km/h, the power car traction motors had to be lower geared compared to Class 43 to climb the long upward grades to be encountered on the Australian routes. A thorough interior clean is indeed required judging by the food stuck to the cabin wall at high level and the chewing gum ? walked into the carpets.
@nkt12 жыл бұрын
Seating aside, the coach interiors appear very similar to those of the HST when they were new. The window size and shape, automatic gangway doors, overhead luggage racks and ladder-style roof lights and vents look identical.

@@nkt1 `The passenger trailer cars were based on a Budd design, with the British Rail Mark 3 trailers considered unsuitable'. New South Wales XPT - Wikipedia. Although i don't know I thought that maybe the Budd derived cars may have a larger loading gauge than the BR mk. 3 and so have more space for the Sleeper accomodation and in general.
@nkt12 жыл бұрын
@@Martindyna Yes, I am aware of that. As I said, the *interiors* of the XPT coaches are very similar to unrefurbished British Rail Mark 3 coaches. The ceilings, in particular, are practically identical. Yes, the Budd cars are wider than the Mark 3, although there's not much in it. The British loading gauge is notoriously restrictive.

Thinking about getting the train down to Sydney for a Football Match in Wollongong in December is the sleeper worth the extra money if travelling by yourself from Roma Street to Sydney Central?
@Jerram892 жыл бұрын
If you're going at night then you get a coach to Casino and train from there. tbh though I'd probably just travel during the day and ask to be put in a forward facing daysitter, which is the sleeper cabin during the day. You might sit with someone else but it's a lot better than the first class saloon. The reality is the sleeping services are good to do as a novelty but aren't up to modern standards for ongoing usage.

@Jerram892 жыл бұрын
Let’s face it it’s a tired product kept going for fear of political backlash until it can be replaced by a product that lacks sleepers but the fact it’s new is the excuse to get rid of them. Unfortunately traditional long distance rail is provided begrudgingly in NSW.

@lwf51 Investments in trainlines have been oriented by studies and policies in the EU, such in the case of the TEN-T. It is not just related to population density. If train network depended on population/surface of the country ratio, Uzbekistan should not have been capable of making high-speed trains.
